RABBI’S MESSAGECell Phones in Shul: Why Not?Rabbi Daniel Cotzin Burg
Several times we’ve taken the kids to the Pumpkin Theatre, a wonderful children’s company in Baltimore County. Before each performance, the director Jimi Kinstle asks the audience to silence their cell phones and avoid texting during the show. He explains, “we are trying to teach our children theater etiquette.” In other words, the theater is not only interested in offering their patrons a distraction-free experience, they go further, by seeing each performance as a “teachable moment,” an opportunity to instill values - awareness and sensitivity to others - in our younger generation.
Lately, I’ve found myself, as have our other clergy, staff and lay leaders, frequently asking members and guests, men, women and teens, to put away their smart phones during services and kiddush lunch (and I’m not talking about doctors fielding urgent calls). We have a no-phone policy posted, in informational pamphlets, and on signs, and yet, I consistently find people either ignoring or overlooking these requests.
I understand. Most of us are deeply accustomed to being connected and plugged in. We have in our pockets and purses, at any given time, miraculous devices enabling us to communicate with loved ones or co-workers, find almost any sought-after information, jot down notes, conduct various transactions, read articles and play games. These devices are not evil; on the contrary they are a gift to humanity, serving many valuable purposes.
So why is it our policy to prohibit their use in shul? People think it’s a halakhic thing, and yes, it is related to Jewish law,

CANTOR’S CORNERAre June and July Boring?Cantor Ira Greenstein
What a year! We begin June with the end of the harvest and the festival of Shavuot, and then June and July are a long stretch of Jewish experience without holidays or special Jewish calendar events - even Tisha B’Av is in August this year. But that allows our attention to be more completely focused on the Book of Numbers, Bemidbar, chronicling of the Israelites’ time in the wilderness.
Noteworthy for (among many other things) my Bar Mitzvah parasha, Shelach Lecha (and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah portion of many other people), the Torah readings are stocked with many an event and lesson to be learned. The book takes us from Sinai to the Jordan River, all led by the physical presence of God manifested as either a cloud or fire. Perhaps as a new nation, with its immaturity and doubts (hence, the incident of the Golden Calf a few weeks before), the need for God’s physical presence is a good thing, but it still does not keep the Israelites from mischief (such as Korach’s rebellion in Numbers 16). In the end, neither the people who left Egypt nor their leader, Moses, are going to complete the journey into Canaan, but there is much for readers to ponder and Israelites to experience along the way.
Aside from Torah readings and services that are very consistent, Beth Am will be humming along. There is much to do to prepare for the High Holydays. Allow
me to put in a plug for the choir - a fun-loving, friendly, mutually-supportive group of volunteers whose goal is to enhance your experience on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Rehearsals start the end of July and extend through Yom Kippur. If you have ANY INCLINATION AT ALL to participate, please read the solicitation in this month’s newsletter and let me know. The skill to read music is NOT a prerequisite, nor is prior experience in a four part choral group…again, choir members help each other learn the music.
During the summer, there is a lay-led Torah study group on Shabbat at 8:45 am before services. We will do singing after lunch almost every Shabbat. Sunday morning minyanim continue…please try to attend and follow e-mail for updates on this activity. We have two fantastic Friday evening Klei Kodesh musical Kaballat Shabbat picnics and services outdoors in the park, being together and having fun as the sun sets.
In the past, I have had reading recommendations for you for every summer. I think that many of you might enjoy the book Making Prayer Real by Rabbi Mike Comins and many others (Jewish Lights, 2010), which explores the reasons for and dimensions of prayer in a collection of individual perspectives that will confront the how and why of prayer.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVEScott Zeger
The times they are a-changin - Robert Zimmerman (aka Bob Dylan) wrote these words 50 years ago, heralding a cultural shift in America. That change was challenging, even painful, but laid the foundation for a more just society which benefits all of us today. (Equality of economic opportunity has not done so well). Among its many achievements, Dylan’s generation founded and sustained Beth Am. And, the times continue to change here as elsewhere.
You better start swimming…The Board is committed to making Beth Am “feel like home” for each member. Toward this end, it has three objectives for this year and next: Succeed in the Campaign for Beth Am; Engage the membership more effectively; and Enliven learning. How are we doing?
Succeed in the Campaign: Led by Lainy LeBow-Sachs and Cy Smith, the “quiet phase” of the Campaign has commitments from nearly 70 families of the Board, Past-Presidents, and several others totaling more than $7M. As soon as a small number of remaining solicitations have been completed, the Development Committee will be ready to start the public phase toward an amazing goal. Stay tuned.
Engage members: Based upon recommendations from its Operations Committee chaired by Ashley Pressman
and David Demsky, the Board’s Executive Committee asked Vice President Julie Gottlieb, Treasurer Alan Kopolow, and Ashley to engage with consultant Mark Smolarz, Chief Operating Officer of The Associated, to review Beth Am’s operations, so we can serve members more effectively and efficiently. They have made four recommendations to improve administrative services and to improve membership engagement. I will appoint a task force to pursue each goal immediately.
Enliven learning: Beth Am is first and foremost a learning community. In its recent discussion about programming priorities, the Board’s Executive Committee identified several learning priorities to pursue in the coming years, for example, B’nai Mitzvah family education.
June offers great learning opportunities for members of all ages. On June 7, Wes Moore will join Beth Am and members of the Reservoir Hill community for a Shabbat learning program about building community. Following Kiddush lunch, New Lens will help lead a decision making workshop.
It’ll…rattle your walls – not if you bring your family and friends to the Beth Am Services in the Park this summer - Fridays, July 11 and August 8. The services are held in the peaceful, natural setting of Maryland Zoo’s Waterfowl Pavilion in Druid Hill Park. This is the perfect

I look forward to conversing during the summer and engaging with you on a whole host of issues. I enjoy the discourse, to share perspectives. These conversations help me refine my approach to serving as the Cantor at Beth Am. So to answer the initial question posed by the title of this article: no, June and July are hardly boring.

but perhaps not the way you might think. Orthodox interpretation of halakhah holds that electricity, and therefore electronic devices of all kinds, are forbidden on Shabbat. Some Conservative authorities rule similarly. But at Beth Am, we permit the use of electricity. We use lights, microphones and aids for the hearing impaired. We simulcast our tefilot to permit those who are homebound or infirm to experience our services. I play amplified guitar music at Klei Kodesh on Friday nights. And, for what it’s worth, my personal practice includes calling my mother and other family from home on Shabbat afternoons.
Our no-cell phone policy is not about the letter of the law; it’s about the spirit of Shabbat. It’s about fostering a certain kind of atmosphere, and, much like the Pumpkin Theatre, it’s about etiquette and education. As you well know, our interconnected cyber-world brings us together, but it also keeps us apart. The ability to text, tweet or snapchat with hundreds or thousands doesn’t feed our intrinsic human need for contact. An iPhone cannot offer the feeling of a handshake or a hug, the sound of a friend’s voice as you look into her (non-virtual) eyes. Unlimited apps distract from the discipline of prayer and attentive conversation and from building sacred community. Aren’t those the reasons you come to shul?
Our Sages have a category of activities called shvut that are discouraged on Shabbat because they distract from Shabbat’s purpose and can lead to melachot (prohibited labor). At Beth Am, we wish to offer you and those around
opportunity to introduce others to what home feels like at Beth Am. Children of all ages enjoy the park, the music, the good food and satisfying prayer. If you know people who might enjoy Beth Am, please ask them to join you for Shabbat dinner and the inspiring service that follows.
The times they are a-changin. Beth Am is changing with them. Bring your friends to see Wes Moore, a Shabbat in the Park, or any event so they too can become part of Beth Am’s future.

you a respite from the typical and tedious. We wish nothing less than for you to be inspired! You can help us achieve this goal by putting away your phones and politely encouraging others to do the same, both during and after services.
On Shabbat, we sing “Ki mitzion...” and take our sacred scroll from the ark. For that brief period in our busy week, isn’t this the only “texting” we need?

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNINGRabbi Kelley Gludt
First and foremost, I would like to offer a well-deserved and heart-felt Todah Rabbah and Yasher Koach to the amazing faculty of the Jewish Discovery Lab. As always, this warm, loving, knowledgeable, and lively group of men and women went above and beyond and we owe them no small debt of gratitude.
Lab highlights for this past year include the Havdallah Sleepover (thanks again Bob, Lisa and Robin for sleeping in the social hall with me and the kids!), Stay and Play, Post Lab dinners, the kashrut zoo field trip, our trip to Israel (including Dead Sea mud and Ben Yehuda Street!), making pickles in our Shtetl Skills class, and everyone laying tefillin. The list goes on and on!
Our teens also had an amazing year. They showed up in force for Red Zone, the Chocolate Seder, King’s Dominion Day and as Madrichim (aides) in Lab. B’nai Mitzvah Class not only met as families for value-clarification workshops, but the kids went out into the world to do good works. They learned about ethics and values with Rabbi Burg in Teen Beit Midrash and really showed their talents at the Shabbat Teen Take Over. (A huge thank you to Adina Amith for all your hard work and teen-wrangling!)
We had our first-ever shul Shabbaton, where nearly a 100 of us came together for a beautiful weekend of learning, praying, drumming, laughing and fun. We had such a good time we are planning on doing it again. Please join us November 14-16 and be a part of it!
We continued our educational journeys with our fabulous Musician-in-Residence Joey Weisenberg, People’s Talmud, Lunch and Learn (now at Cross Keys too), Shabbat 101 challah-baking, and a book discussion on My Promised Land, just to name just a few, and we’ finishing off the year with TED Talks at Shavuot and a visit from Wes Moore.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this past year happen. Thank you to the Youth Education and Adult Education Committees for encouragement, enthusiasm and energy. There is no end-of-the-year wrap up without a thank you to Warren McFarlane. Without Warren’s help, not a single one of these events could have taken place. Thank you for your kindness, your patience and your professionalism - I know for certain we aren‘t always easy!

Here’s what some of the Bookworm volunteers have to say:
“I joined Bookworms thinking that I would enrich the lives of inner city students, but instead discovered that they enriched my life.”
~Ann Saunders
“I have really enjoyed this experience and am already looking forward to next year. The children are so enthusiastic; watching their reading skills grow has been very rewarding.”
~Sandy Angell
“Every time I go to John Eager Howard, I find that sharing the joy of reading is an enriching experience for me as well as for the children as we explore together.”
~Barbara Rosenberger
Beth Am’s Bookworms program has completed its fifth year at our neighborhood school, John Eager Howard Elementary. Volunteers from Beth Am read to a class of twenty-four kindergarten students once a month throughout the school year. The volunteers took books of their choice to read to the children and then donated the books to the classroom lending library.
At the last session of this school year, we gave each child a book as a way of encouraging summer reading. The books were purchased with grants from the Beth Am Social Action Committee and the Jewish Volunteer Connection.
An anecdote from Ed Levin:
“As I was walking to my car after services, I stopped to say hello to two boys who were playing with their bikes. The younger boy looked at me and said, ‘I know you. You’re Mr. Ed.’ He knew me from Bookworms.”
We wish to thank our enthusiastic and dedicated Bookworm volunteers Sandy Angell, Mary Azrael, Bailey Fine, Elaine Freeman, Laurie Glassner, Joyce Keating, Francine Krumholz, Cheri Levin, Ed Levin, Raellen Polan, Barbara Rosenberger, Carla Rosenthal, Ann Saunders, Linda Weisfeldt, and Norm Wigutow.
If you are interested in becoming a Bookworm volunteer or need more information, please contact Cheri Levin at 410-664-2309 or [email protected].

BOOK GIVEAWAY
Actually, the High Holydays Choir would love to welcome new members. One can never have too much of a good thing. The choir is a low-key, friendly, mutually supportive group of people who enjoy making a difference, adding so much to the meaning and spirit of Beth Am’s services. Music is notated for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass…but reading music is not required. It is perfectly fine if you want to “try us out” and sing along for part of the services, or expand on previous participation. If
you sang with the choir before and want to re-join, come home again. No reasonable offers refused. We know…it just seems too good to be true, but it IS. Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8-10 pm starting late July and we will try to accommodate most constraints on your busy schedules.
If interested, please contact Cantor Ira at 443-759-7807 (evenings) or [email protected].
