Level 2 Award in Introduction to Counselling Skills Who is the course for? This qualification introduces trainees to initial counselling concepts, as well as initial counselling skills, which can be used in everyday life. Progression Students will be able to progress onto the Level 2 CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Skills qualification.

Qualification Structure 1 mandatory unit:

Qualification Objective This unit/qualification is intended for candidates who:

» want to learn initial counselling skills to help others – either in a voluntary or an employed situation;

» want to find out more about this field – this course won’t teach them to be a counsellor, but may help them decide whether or not they want to train as one.

Completion of a counselling application and college enrolment form is necessary and forms are available to print off from our webpage www.varndean.ac.uk under Adult Education, Counselling.

Progression Candidates aged 18+ can progress to CPCAB’s Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (CSK-L2) or aged 19+ to CPCAB’s Level 3 Certificate in Life Coaching Skills (LSC-L3).

The unit credit can also be used towards other relevant qualifications on the QCF.

Assessment Tutor assessment of candidate portfolio evidencing minimum assessment requirements.

External verification by CPCAB.

CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills Who is the course for? Students who are over 18 and have successfully completed an introductory course in counselling. Although it will not qualify them to be counsellors, candidates will learn counselling skills to help and support others, either in a voluntary or employed capacity. The course will give them skills that can be used in a variety of roles, which might include support workers, nursing, key workers, community workers and teaching. Areas of work could include mental health, the homeless, substance misuse, education, youth and community work and health and social care. Progression The qualification offers progression to the CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies.

References may be taken up and in some cases students may be interviewed to ensure that the course is appropriate.

3. Assessment programme – minimum requirements

Candidates must be assessed as Proficient in all 7 learning outcomes of the mandatory unit and must be assessed as Proficient in both internal and external assessment to achieve the unit/qualification.

Candidates must give two pieces of evidence for each criterion. In addition the Candidate Learning Record, when complete, must include references to all three assessment methods (documents, tutor observation and testimony).

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Candidates watch a 15-minute CPCAB DVD of a “helping” session and complete a 1 hour Candidate Feedback Paper in relation to the DVD. This is sent to CPCAB for assessment. 8

MARKING SCHEME

Internal assessment: Candidates must achieve all 7 learning outcomes of the unit.

External assessment: Candidates must achieve 3 out of 5 marks to be assessed as Proficient.

3 Proforma and guidesheets for internal assessment can be downloaded from the tutor CD or CPCAB website. 4 Self-evaluation of learning, progress and completion of learning tasks (criteria). 5 This is an on-going review of learning during the course (also called a “learning journal”). 6 All tutor-observed skills sessions can form part of the course and do not need to be formal assessments. 7 Testimony can include tutorial records and direct questioning by tutor-assessor. 8 Mock papers are on the tutor CD. Practice DVDs are automatically sent to your centre. External assessment takes place

when at least two-thirds of the course has been completed.

The core tutor-assessor needs to be an experienced practitioner of counselling skills, an experienced trainer and group-facilitator, and at least a developing supervisor of those using counselling skills.

4. Candidate entry requirements

This unit/qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological confusion. Centres need to ensure that all potential candidates are made aware of the nature of the course, and in particular that the course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.

CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies Who is the course for? This qualification is for those aged 19+, who have successfully completed CPCAB’s Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and want to take the next step in training to become a counsellor. It will be valuable for anyone who wants to attain accredited counselling status, those seeking a career change or anyone who would like to develop their use of counselling skills for use at work or in a personal capacity. Progression Students will be able to progress onto a Degree or Postgraduate Course to become a qualified counsellor.

Qualification structure 1 mandatory unit:

M/600/9032 Developing Understanding of Counselling

Target candidates This unit/qualification is intended for candidates who want to:

» take the next step in training to become a counsellor (having already acquired counselling skills);

» learn more about counselling theory and agency work

Level 3

Guided Learning Hours 90 hours delivered over 30 weekly sessions of 3 hours each

Credit Value 18

Minimum Age 19 years

Entry requirements Candidates are required to have undertaken counselling skills training – e.g. CPCAB’s Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (CSK-L2) or equivalent units/qualifications of at least 75 GLH.

References may be taken up and in some cases students may be interviewed to ensure that the course is appropriate.
