ADVISORBIOGRAPHIESKRISD.GUTIÉRREZKrisD.GutiérrezisProfessorofLanguage,LiteracyandCulture.ShewasmostrecentlyaprofessorofLearningSciences/LiteracyandtheInauguralProvost’sChair,UniversityofColorado,BoulderandProfessorEmeritaofSocialResearchMethodologyatGSE&ISatUCLA.ProfessorGutiérrezisanationalleaderineducation,withanemphasisinliteracy,learningsciences,andinterpretiveanddesign-basedapproachestoinquiry.GutiérrezisamemberoftheNationalAcademyofEducationandisthePastPresidentoftheAmericanEducationalResearchAssociationandtheNationalConferenceonResearchonLanguageandLiteracy.GutiérrezwasappointedbyPresidentObamaandconfirmedbytheU.S.SenateasamemberoftheNationalBoardfortheInstituteofEducationScienceswheresheservedasViceChair.Herresearchexamineslearningindesignedlearningenvironments,withattentiontostudentsfromnon-dominantcommunitiesandEnglishLearners.GutierrezreceivedtheAERAHispanicResearchinElementary,Secondary,orPostsecondaryEducationAwardandtheInauguralAwardforInnovationsinResearchonDiversityinTeacherEducation,DivisionK(AERA).SheservedontheU.S.DepartmentofEducationReadingFirstAdvisoryCommitteeandamemberofPresidentObama’sEducationPolicyTransitionTeam.ALISONHRAMIECAlisonHramiechasspentthelast15yearsre-definingwhatschoollookslikeforBoston’smostatriskhighschoolpopulation.HertenureatBostonDayandEveningAcademybeganin2004asoneofthefoundingscienceteachersfortheDayprogram.In2008aftercompletingherprincipaltrainingandbeingmentoredbytheBDEAleadershipteamshewashiredastheDirectorofCurriculumandInstruction.Throughherleadership,shehashelpedbringclaritytotheschool’scompetency-basedprogrammethodology,helpingitbecomeknownnationwide.AlisonistheleaddesignerofBDEA’ssummerinstitute,REAL(ResponsiveEducationAlternativeLab),whichprovideseducatorsfromaroundthecountrythetoolstotransformstudentlearningto‘student-centered’learning.AsofJuly1st2015,sheisBDEA’snewHeadofSchool.PAULK.LEATHERPaulLeatherwassworninasDeputyCommissionerofEducationonApril14,2010.Mr.Leather’sbackgroundandexperienceinEducation,Counseling,andAdministrationinNewHampshirespansthreedecades.HeisalsoservingasDirectoroftheDivisionofCareerTechnologyandAdultLearningfortheNewHampshireDepartmentofEducation(NHDOE)andoverseestheadministrationofVocationalRehabilitation,AdultEducation,CareerandTechnicalEducation,Tech-Prep,SchoolGuidanceandCounseling,ApprenticeshipPrograms,andCareerDevelopmentefforts,includingWorkforceInvestmentActcoordinationfortheNHDOE.Inaddition,Mr.LeatherispastpresidentoftheCouncilofStateAdministratorsofVocationalRehabilitation(CSAVR)andoverseesstatewideinitiativessuchasHighSchoolRedesign,ExtendedLearningOpportunities,andDropOutPrevention.JALMEHTAJalMehtaisanassociateprofessorineducationattheHarvardGraduateSchoolofEducation.Hisprimaryresearchinterestisinunderstandingwhatitwouldtaketocreatehighqualityschoolingat

scale,withaparticularinterestintheprofessionalizationofteaching.Heistheco-editoroftherecentlyreleasedTheFuturesofSchoolReform(Cambridge:HarvardEducationPress,2012),andtheauthoroftheforthcomingTheAllureofOrder:HighHopes,DashedExpectationsandtheTroubledQuesttoRemakeAmericanSchooling(NewYork:OxfordUniversityPress,2013).Heiscurrentlyworkingontwoprojects:TheChastenedDream,ahistoryoftheefforttolinksocialsciencewithsocialpolicytoachievesocialprogress;andInSearchofDeeperLearning,acontemporarystudyofschools,systems,andnationsthatareseekingtoproduceambitiousinstruction.JalreceivedhisPh.D.inSociologyandSocialPolicyfromHarvardUniversity.BETHMILLERBethM.Miller,Ph.D.,joinedELEducationinApril2015asManagingDirectorofResearchandCommunicationstoleadourdeepeningfocusonclarifying,measuringandcommunicatingtheimpactofourwork.Dr.Millerbringsextensiveexperienceinconductingandcommunicatingmeaningfulresearchthatstrengthensorganizationsandtheirmissions.PriortojoiningELEducation,sheservedastheDirectorofResearchandEvaluationattheNellieMaeEducationFoundationforsixyears,wheresheoversawtheFoundation'sgrant-makingintheareasofK-12educationresearchandevaluationaswellascreatingandleadinganOrganizationalMeasurementsystem.Previously,asthePresidentofMillerMidzikResearchAssociatesandResearchDirectorattheNationalInstituteonOut-of-SchoolTimeatWellesleyCollege,Dr.Millerconductedlocalandnationalprojectsineducationresearch,evaluation,dissemination,andpolicyanalysisforawidevarietyofclients,includingstategovernments,foundations,andschooldistricts.ShehasalsoheldpositionsasanadjunctfacultymemberatTuftsUniversityandBrandeisUniversity.JAMESPELLEGRINOJamesW.Pellegrinoisco-directorofLearningSciencesResearchInstitute,LiberalArtsandSciencesDistinguishedProfessor,andDistinguishedProfessorofEducation.Hisuniqueblendofexpertise–whichcombinesknowledgeofcognitivescience,psychometrics,educationaltechnology,instructionalpracticeandeducationalpolicy–hasledtoappointmentasheadofseveralNationalAcademyofScience/NationalResearchCouncilstudycommittees.PellegrinoisanAERAfellow,alifetimeNationalAssociateoftheNationalAcademyofSciences,andapastmemberoftheBoardonTestingandAssessmentoftheNationalResearchCouncil.In2007,hewaselectedtolifetimemembershipintheNationalAcademyofEducation.Throughouthiscareer,Pellegrinohassupervisedseverallarge-scaleresearchanddevelopmentprojectsfundedbyagenciessuchasNSF,ONR,AFOSR,NIHandprivatefoundations.Hehasauthoredorco-authoredmorethan270books,chaptersandjournalarticlesintheareasofcognition,instructionandassessment,andhehasmadenumerousinvitedpresentationsatlocal,state,nationalandinternationalmeetingsandatuniversitiesthroughouttheworld.PAULREVILLEPaulRevilleistheFrancisKeppelProfessorofPracticeofEducationalPolicyandAdministrationattheHarvardGraduateSchoolofEducation.HeisthefoundingdirectorofHGSE'sEducationRedesignLab.HerecentlycompletednearlyfiveyearsofserviceastheSecretaryofEducationfortheCommonwealthofMassachusetts.AsGovernorPatrick'stopeducationadviser,RevilleestablishedanewExecutiveOfficeofEducationandhadoversightofhighereducation,K-12,andearlyeducationinthenation'sleadingstudentachievementstate.HeservedintheGovernor'sCabinetandplayedaleadingeducationreformroleonmattersrangingfromtheAchievementGapActof2010andCommonCoreStateStandardstotheCommonwealth'shighlysuccessfulRacetotheTopproposal.PriortojoiningthePatrickAdministration,RevillehadchairedtheMassachusettsStateBoardofEducation,foundedtheRennieCenterforEducationResearchandPolicy,co-foundedtheMassachusettsBusinessAllianceforEducation

(MBAE),chairedtheMassachusettsReformReviewCommission,chairedtheMassachusettsCommissiononTimeandLearning,andservedasexecutivedirectorofthePewForumonStandards-BasedReform,anationalthinktankwhichconvenedtheU.S.'sleadingresearchers,practitioners,andpolicymakerstosetthenationalstandardsagenda.RevilleplayedacentralroleinMBAE'sdevelopmentofandadvocacyforMassachusettshistoricEducationReformActof1993.RevillehasbeenamemberoftheHGSEfacultysince1997andhasservedasdirectoroftheEducationPolicyandManagementProgram.Reville'scareer,whichcombinesresearch,policy,andpractice,beganwithserviceasaVISTAvolunteer/youthworker.Heservedasateacherandprincipaloftwourban,alternativehighschools.HeholdsaBAfromColoradoCollege,anMAfromStanfordUniversityandfivehonorarydoctoratedegrees.Heisthefatheroffourchildren.JORGERUIZDEVELASCOJorgeRuizdeVelascojoinedtheGardnerCenterasAssociateDirectorin2013.JorgecomestoStanfordfromBerkeleyLaw,wherehewasDirectoroftheWarrenInstitute'sProgramonEducationLawandPolicy.Thefocusofhisworkisonthestudyandpromotionofchangeinpublicschools,theimplicationsofeducationreformfordisadvantagedstudents,educationlawandpolicy,andtheeffectofimmigrationonschoolsandcommunities.PriortohisappointmentattheWarrenInstitute,heservedasDirectoroftheInstituteforResearchonEducationPolicyandPracticeatStanford,andhasservedtermsasaProgramOfficerforEducationalOpportunityandScholarshipattheFordFoundation,andasaSeniorProgramOfficeratboththeJamesIrvineandWilliam&FloraHewlettFoundations.JorgealsoservedasaSeniorResearchAssociateatTheUrbanInstituteandasalawyerandpolicyanalystfortheU.S.DepartmentofEducation’sOfficeforCivilRights.HeisagraduateofHarvardCollege(1984),andtheBoaltHallSchoolofLaw(1987).Subsequently,heearnedanMAinEducationAdministrationandPolicyAnalysis(1994)andaPhDinPoliticalScience(1999),bothfromStanfordUniversity.
