FAREWELL FROM ANNE LAMONT
Dear Stradbroke Families,
On the very last day of school last year I accepted a
position as an Education Director in DECD. I started my
new role in mid-January and am working with schools
and preschools in the Tea Tree Gully and Golden Grove
areas.
It has been a privilege to be the principal for Stradbroke
School and part of this great community of children,
staff and families for the past 10 years. I have so many
wonderful memories of my time at Stradbroke and I am sad to say goodbye.
Making the decision to leave Stradbroke was never going to be easy however
as Dr Seuss once wrote “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it
happened”. Stradbroke will always be a very special place for me. From the
koalas, kangaroos and echidnas that are visitors to our yard to the amazing
students who demonstrate courage and compassion every day and make
Stradbroke a great place to grow and learn.
I know that Tanya with the support of Greg, Sarah, Kylie, Rachel and Sara will
continue to provide high quality leadership for Stradbroke. Being a part of the
Stradbroke leadership team has been incredibly rewarding and I take this
opportunity to acknowledge their absolute commitment to Stradbroke and
the genuine support they provide for all children, staff and families. Thank
you also to Anona and Kathy in the front office, as the first point of contact,
in person or over the phone, they deliver the highest standards of service and
because of this create the environment that allows other staff to also deliver
their best.
The modern day school is a collection of services and programs working in
harmony to create a place where children are safe, happy and learning. Thank
you to Kate in the canteen, Bec in OSHC and to the support staff who provide
specific programs to support children’s learning and wellbeing. Thank you to
our Governing Council for their support and contribution to Stradbroke. They
are a dedicated, energetic and committed group of parents and represent our
school community with care and warmth. In the first part of this year the
Governing Council will be involved in the process of recruiting the next
tenured principal.
We are also fortunate to have an amazing staff team at Stradbroke and I
thank them all for their support and professionalism over the years. They are
truly committed to providing the best possible environment for children and
to being creative and collaborative in their work.
Being appointed to this new role happened so quickly at the end of last year
that I didn’t have the opportunity to farewell students and families. I will be
at the R-7 assembly tomorrow to say thank you and farewell to our amazing
students. Please accept my sincere thanks and appreciation for an amazing
decade of learning and I look forward to keeping up with school news.
Anne Lamont

This week classes and teachers have been focussing on
reinforcing the 5 concepts from Play is the Way – please read
the newsletter insert for more details about KidsMatter Week
for 2018.
The first newsletter of the school year is distributed as a paper
version to all families. After this the Stradbroke School
newsletter is distributed to families through the Skoolbag App,
Email distribution and also available on the school website.
Families can request a paper copy of the school newsletter.
Please complete and return the attached form if your family
would like to receive a paper copy each fortnight for 2018. A
new request form needs to be completed each year.
The Stradbroke School priorities for 2018 are:
• Social & Emotional Learning – supporting and engaging
children to develop self-regulation and positive
relationships with their peers. Managing emotions is
central to positive wellbeing therefore socially competent
children learn how to manage many emotions including
joy, fear, anxiety, anger and sadness.
• STEM – engaging children in Science, Technology,
Engineering & Mathematics with a focus on digital
technologies including coding and robotics.
• Independent Reading – developing confident and
competent readers through targeted teaching and
consistent practice at home and school.

SKOOLBAG APP
Stradbroke School uses the Skoolbag app to share school news,
newsletters, events calendar, cancellations, school notices,
school information, school timetables, school documents and
much more. In the event of a power failure or school
emergency the Skoolbag app is the quickest way for us to
communicate with families.
Please see the school website www.stradsch.sa.edu.au for
instructions about how to download this app to your device. If
your device is unable to download the app all information
shared through Skoolbag can also be viewed by clicking on the
Skoolbag image on the school website.
YEAR 5 CYBER SAFETY USE AGREEMENT UPDATE
Today, every year 5 student at Stradbroke
School received a Cyber-Safety Use
Agreement for Primary/Middle Years
Students. Please read and understand the
agreement, sign the last page and return
the tear off slip to your child’s teacher by
Friday 9th February.
KIDSMATTER WEEK & SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING
At Stradbroke, the first week of each new school year is ‘Kids
Matter Week’. The purpose of this week is for students, class
groups and staff to have the time and opportunity to build
strong, positive relationships. Research shows that…
“Constructive student/teacher and student/student
relationships have a large and positive impact on students’
health and wellbeing, as well as academic results.”
Throughout Kids Matter Week and over the year, students also
learn about their social and emotional wellbeing and how to
be positive members of a class, school and wider society. This
includes taking part in games and lessons centred around the
5 Play is the Way key concepts of:
 It takes great strength to be sensible;
 Be brave, participate to progress;
Pursue your personal best, no matter who you work
with;
 Have good reasons for the things you say and do;
And the ‘Golden Rule’ – Treat others as you would like
them to treat you.
These concepts have been embedded within student learning
at Stradbroke since 2016 and are now in their third year. This
year we will be deepening this social and emotional learning
(SEL) to include Virtues Education. The aim of Virtues
Education is to create truly empathetic individuals. The virtues
that children will be focusing on during 2018 will be:
 Good manners
 Friendliness
 Courage
 Persistence/resilience
 Tolerance/acceptance
 Compassion.
Newsletters over the year will provide further updates and
information on SEL and Virtues Education.

Stradbroke Wellbeing Leader

WEATHER POLICY
At Stradbroke we have a hot weather policy for days over 38°C.
When the forecast maximum temperature is over 35°C daily
fitness will be before 10am and after school sport training
sessions are cancelled. The temperature is checked on the
Bureau of Meteorology website just before recess and lunch
and if the temperature is 38°C or higher all children remain in
their classrooms for the recess and lunch breaks.
RESOURCE CENTRE
Welcome back to the school library for 2018. Our staff team
remains the same as last year with two Teacher Librarians:
Emma Green, who will be supporting Reception-Year 4 classes
and Tali de Lacy, supporting Year 5-7 classes. Christina Sapio is
our Library Technician.
Excellence and Achievement in a Supportive School Environment 4
Some reminders about Library ‘need to knows’: • All students have access to the school library on a weekly
basis for borrowing with their class. Borrowing and
returning can also be done most mornings 8.30-8.50am
and afternoons 3.10-3.30pm. If the library is unattended
there is a sign displayed and borrowing will need to be
done another time, however returns can still be posted
through the return slot. Most classes also have a returns
box in their classroom that is sent over regularly. • Reception – Year 2 students must have a library bag to be
able to borrow. These bags provide greater protection for
the books as well as making it easier to carry books to and
from the library. Our general rule is ‘No bag, no
borrowing’. All reception students, as well as Year 1 and 2
students new to the school, receive a complimentary bag.
If bags are then lost it is the responsibility of families to
replace them. • Students who have returned from holidays with overdue
books still on their borrowing cards will be restricted to
borrowing one book at a time until this matter is resolved. • Different year levels have different borrowing limits.
Reception, Year 1 and 2 students can borrow 2 books each
week. Year 3-5 students we generally encourage no more
than 4 at a time but will increase it when needing music
texts or similar items. Year 6 and 7 students can have up
to 8 books with dictionaries and other text books included
in this limit. Year 7 students who left the school last year without returning
all their resources have received invoices to be paid, and we
appreciate these resources being returned or paid for.
STRADBROKE RECYCLED
A Second-hand Uniform Stall will be held on Friday 16 February
(week 3) from 8:30-9:00am in the quadrangle.
Most items are available for a gold-coin donation, except for:
- polar fleece jumpers with school logo and two-tone school
tops ($5) and two-tone track jackets ($10)
All proceeds go directly to the school. Thank you to all the
families who have already generously donated items for sale.
Donations of good quality, clean uniform items with logos on
and nametags off are always gratefully received and can be left
in the hamper outside the cashier’s office. Keep the goodwill
going Stradbroke!
PIANO LESSONS
There are still a couple of spots open for piano lessons in 2018
during school hours. Accepting students from year 2 onwards.
Students learn to read music, keyboard, performance and
theory skills using fun contemporary method materials in a
weekly lesson with a qualified and experienced teacher and
state examiner. Learn for fun and participate in performances,
or take it more seriously and do exams. Call Yvette Baer on

CANTEEN
Welcome to 2018, I hope everyone has had a wonderful
summer!
MENU: We are excited to start 2018 with the Qkr! by
mastercard online ordering app. I hope everyone has had the
chance to download it to their mobile devices, if it doesn't
appear in your "store" or please try the following link:
www.qkr.mastercard.com/store in a search engine if you
encounter any problems, please call into the canteen. For
families who would like to continue ordering via the bag
system, the new term 1, 2018 menu is available on the schools
website and skoolbag app.
MENU PRICES: At the end of 2017, there was a review of the
canteen menu prices, and several changes have been made.
This is due to prices increases by our suppliers that we are no
longer able to absorb. We appreciate your understanding.
FRIDAY TREAT DAYS: This term we will
be offering Sushi every Friday as a lunch
order and over the counter at recess,
Chicken OR Tuna, $1-50 per piece.
PANCAKE WEEK: This year pancake
week will be in week 3. A Pancake, Honey and Ice cream for
$2.00 served daily at recess time from
Monday 12th until Friday 16th
February. We hope all the students
enjoy this very popular treat. If anyone
is available to help serve at recess (11
until 11-30am) please let me know. It
would be a fantastic to have at least three volunteers on each
day.
VOLUNTEER ROSTER: Thank you to the wonderful volunteers
who have already offered to help in the canteen this term. We
have unfortunately lost some regular helpers due to children
leaving Stradbroke School or work commitments. It is because
of the support of the school community which allows us to
offer such a variety of food at recess and lunch. We provide
you with lunch, coffee/tea and it is a wonderful way to meet
new parents, learn about the school and watch your child at
play. The students love seeing their mum, dad or grandparents
in the canteen. If anyone is able to help, even one day a term,
please let me know.
WEDNESDAY AFTER SCHOOL ICEBLOCKS: The canteen will be
open once again in term 1 on a Wednesday from 3.10pm-
3.30pm for the sale of slushies and ice blocks. I would
appreciate any parental help during those times!
Thank you,
Kate Majewski, Canteen Manager
SPORTS

were due on 8th December 2017.
CRICKET
Cricket registration forms are due tomorrow, Friday 2nd

How can I help to develop the IB learner profiles in my child? Part 1
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded students who help to
create a better and more peaceful world. At Stradbroke we explore the development of
these 10 attributes across all facets of the school day. Below are some suggestions of how
you, as a parent, can continue to work on these attributes at home.
Balanced – students who are balanced are healthy and are aware that eating
properly, getting enough sleep and exercising are important in their lives.
• Encourage your child to participate in a wide variety of structure activities.
• Discuss the food groups with your child. Spend a few minutes during
mealtime deciding if what your family is eating is a balanced meal.
Caring - students who are caring what people around them to be happy and are
sensitive to their needs.
• Think about how your family can get involved with community organizations.
• Reduce, reuse and recycle – an opportunity for your child to be mindful and
care about the environment.
Communicator – students who are communicators are able to think and
communicate in more than on language. They can express their ideas by speaking,
drawing and writing.
• Encourage your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends by writing
letters, using the phone, skyping or sending an email.
Courageous – students who are courageous will try new things.
• If your child is feeling uneasy about trying something, encourage them to
attempt it and then reflect on both whether they liked the activity and how
it felt to try something new.
Inquirer – students who are inquirers are curious about the world. They love learning
and discovering new things and will carry this love of learning with them throughout
life.
• Encourage areas of your child’s interest by visiting the library to borrow books
that explore these topics.
• Model being an inquirer. Admit when you don’t know the answer to a
problem or a question and seek out answers in front of your child.
EMERGENCY DRILLS
Each year we practice Emergency Drills
(evacuations and invacuations) so that we have
procedures in place to respond quickly and carefully
to a variety of situations. We have four types of
emergency drills and these are practised at least
once each year. Class teachers discuss with their
classes the types of emergency drills and talk about
what they will do as a class. The specific day and
time of an emergency drill cannot be notified in
advance. The drills also include all staff and any
visitors on site at the time of the drill. The four types
of drills we practise are:
1. Evacuation – on site: A series of short blasts of
the siren is used to alert all adults and children
on site to evacuate to the oval. This type of
emergency drill could be used for an internal
fire.
2. Evacuation – off site: A series of short blasts of
the siren followed by an announcement is used
to alert adults and children on site to evacuate
to the Rostrevor Tennis Club Courts. This type
of emergency drill could be used if we were
advised to evacuate by emergency services e.g.
a creek flood
3. Invacuation – shelter in place: A continuous
blast of the siren followed by an
announcement to stay inside buildings is used
to alert all adults and children to stay inside or
to move inside the nearest building. This type
of emergency drill could be used if there was a
fire in the hills and smoke was blowing over the
school. A few years ago we also used this drill
when there was a kangaroo in the school
grounds. During this drill people can move
around inside buildings.
4. Invacuation – Precautionary Building
Confinement: A continuous blast of the siren
followed by the announcement “LOCK DOWN”
is used to alert all adults and children to stay
inside or to move inside the nearest building.
Once inside they must stay down on the floor,
away from windows and doors, turn off lights
and close blinds. This type of drill is used if
there is an extreme violent threat.
After we practise each drill feedback is collected
from staff to identify any issues with the procedure
and improvements are made. All drills include a roll
call to ensure that all students, staff and visitors are
accounted for.
POWER FAILURES
In the case of a school wide power failure (which
thankfully happens very rarely) we lose access to
our phone and computer systems. In this situation
the only way we can communicate to school
families is through the Skoolbag app as we are able
to access this through an iPad and post messages
for school families. If you have not yet downloaded
the Skoolbag app to your phone or tablet we
encourage you to do this so that you have access to
the latest information sent from the school.
Information about how to download the Skoolbag
app is available on the school website.
RAN VOLUNTEER INDUCTION TRAINING
As part of the child protection policies it is now a requirement of The Department of Education and Child
Development (DECD) that all volunteers in schools complete the Responding to Abuse and Neglect education and
care induction for volunteers. The workshop will cover important topics such as: Child protection, duty of care,
confidentiality requirements, work health and safety and DCSI criminal history screening check.
It is important to understand that anyone who wishes to volunteer at Stradbroke School needs to attend a volunteer
induction workshop. As of term 2 2015, only volunteers who are trained and have a DCSI criminal history screening
check will be able to support students or activities at Stradbroke School. The workshop is free and you will receive a
certificate to confirm that you have completed the training.
