Istria is a geographically relativelyenclosed region with geological surfacedeposits that allow for different rawstone material exploitation. Dependingon the stone raw material, differentmacroscopic and microscopic analyseswill be used.

It can be argued that stone has beenone of the most important kinds of rawmaterial during most of humanexistence. Even though the informationabout provenance or source location ofraw stone material found onarchaeological sites can tell us a lotabout societies and economies of theperiod in question, this type of researchisn’t often in the focus of archaeology.

We propose to sample quarry sites,as well as other primary and secondarydeposits of different raw material in theNorthern Adriatic that may have beenused in prehistory and antiquity of Istriato obtain a relevant reference base forprovenance studies.
