Stone Age to Iron AgeWhat were the different ages?

The first people in Britain lived about 15,000 years ago and historians split them into

‘ages’ to find out what was different about them.

StonehengeThis is a prehistoric monument in England. It is made up of a ring of

standing stones. It might have been used as a meeting place or for

religious ceremonies.

Skara BraeSkara Brae is a neolithic settlement built out of stone in Scotland. It has

helped historians find out more about how Stone Age people lived.

Iron Age - Humans used iron to make tools, and farmed

land instead of hunting. They lived in

communities.

Bronze Age - In this era, metals were used to make hunting tools.

Humans also began to farm land.

Stone Age - When the first humans began to

live in Europe. They used stones as tools.

Caves A space between rocks which could be used as shelter or a home for people in the stone age.

Flint A hard, sharp material, which was used to make weapons.

Forage To look around for things to eat.

Handaxe A sharp tool that you can hold in your hand. It was used for hunting and building.

Hunter-gather A name given for people who had to hunt and find their own food.

Mammoths A large, elephant-like creature that is no longer alive today.

Neolithic The first part of the stone age because “neo” means new.

Prehistoric A time when history wasn’t even recorded.

Tools Useful objects that early people would to help with building and hunting.

Weapons Tools that are used to help hunt and capture animals. They were sometimes used for fighting as well.
