For our first home game can I extend a very warmwelcome to our friends and close rivals from the fair cityof Chester. Last season saw honours shared and bothteams at various times vying for a promotion place.
Keen observers will have realised that neither weresuccessful and truth be known I suspect we are happy tobe playing each other in this competitive and wellmatched league.
These are interesting times for our great game with aworld cup upon us and turmoil in the upper strata of theUnion. But WE are not in turmoil - our pitch is fed andwatered and we're keen to play. So Good Luck to both.
May I also add before I close a VERY BIG THANK YOUto all the volunteers from the Bees who helped with thecamping for the Bingley Live music festival, especiallyGlen Shaw and Dave Morris. This has been a great fundraiser to help support the club over the coming year.
WELCOME

Bees @ home to ChesterChester RUFC was founded in 1925 and last season the men from Hare Lane were nip and tuckwith the Bees for much of the season for the runners up berth behind Stockport. The side got off toa flyer last season and racked up six straight wins in the first six. They then came to visit WagonLane in October and rather ran out of steam as The Bees gave them a good old fashioned what-forin a decisive 42 points to 13. Chester did extract some revenge in the return fixture, defeating us by19 points to 13 as we rather faded in the home stretch at the end of last season. Looking at thescoring record of both clubs, it is evident that a high percentage of the points scored by both sidescame from Gavin Stead on the Bees side of the ledger and Rhys Hayes for Chester; Stead finishedtop of the league scoring charts with 287 points with Hayes chasing him home with 264. Bothshould be featured in today's game; will it come down to who keeps their nerve in frontof the sticks?
WHITCOMBE’S VIEW
“what we are trying to buildhere is a long lasting platformfor success; you might even callit a dynasty.”
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our firsthome fixture of the 2011/12 campaign. Hopefully youhave all been keeping up to date with events downhere at the club via the website over the summerand I am sure you are as fired up as I am to get stuckinto our first home fixture of the season. You may have read in my previous posts on thewebsite that I said that my target for this season is atop six finish in this league. Let me first of all re-as-sure you that this does not mean we lack ambition, far from it, but what we are trying to build here is along lasting platform for success; you might even callit a dynasty. There are some very young men whoare the key members of my squad and we are onlyjust starting to build the strength in the depth thatthis club needs to be a major force in rugby in theNorth of England. We finished fourth last term andyes, I would like to think we can go higher than that, but as I have said to anyone who wants to listen, thisis all about sustainable and repeatable success; itwould be no use gaining promotion and then gettingour backsides kicked every week in the higherdivision. No-one wants that.
I think I mentioned in an earlier update that we hadsigned 14 new players to the squad this summer. I ampleased to be able to report that number has swelledto 18 or 19 now as more players come down toWagon Lane and tell me they fancy being part of thisthing we are building. Mick Waterhouse or BenjiPickin who look after registrations can give you allthe detail, but I think very pleased with the directionwe are going that when we lose one player, likeJames Holland to Wharfedale, two others turn up attraining to replace him. That strength in depth will beabsolutely key to the success of this club.
We need to see the Second team start performingand beyond them a third team which gives everyonea chance to get out there and play for our club. Oneof the most pleasing things this off season for me asan old front rower, is to see we are beginning to geta bit of strength up front. Last season I really felt forRyan Wederall who battled on all season carrying afew knocks and who looked a beaten man come theend of the season. Now I actually have the chance torotate the squad a bit with Jason Moss, Eddie Peglau,Roger Raper and James Hastie all in the frame and ofcourse the young Georgian lad to come on boardtoo. I think we can keep the likes of Ryan playing foranother 3 seasons if we can manage him properly, Ireally don’t want to have to be so reliant on one manin future.
As this is the first programme of the season and weare experimenting with the layout, I am having to pullthese notes together before we have played thegame at Lymm, so I can’t comment on how thingswent unfortunately, but I can reflect briefly on thegame over at Crossleyans on the Bank Holidayweekend. It was good to get the season off to a win, that is the most important part. I was frustrated byhow it was refereed as that stopped us in our tracksa few times and I thought we were unlucky with oneor two scores that weren’t given, but all in all rightacross the squad there were people I was verypleased with.
Some told me Crossleyans were not at full strength, but that doesn’t matter to me, we can only play whatyou put in front of us. I made young Matt Cochranemy man of the match. He was tremendous in myview and I hope his emergence as a class act for usshows everyone that we really mean it when we saythe door to the first team is always open. If a playershows me and the coaching staff he deserves hischance, whatever his age, background andreputation, he will be in the first team, no question.
