Surrounded by nature’s beauty and the simple pleasures of small town life, Stayton and Sublimity are rich in what matters: neigh-
bors who say hello, business people who greet customers by name, public servants who are our friends and fellow residents.
When so much in the world is complicated, hectic and stressful, we have community treasures: peaceful places to relax and inter-esting places to explore, all right in our own backyard! Businesses and families grow in these communities. Opportunities for quality education, entertainment and successful careers are all right here.
The Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce is committed to working with businesses, individuals, organizations and local city government to improve our economy and maintain our quality of life. Our vision is to be the driving force, igniting passion for business success and community prosperity. We believe working together produces the best results for the long-term, sustainable economic health of our communities.
The support of a strong and energetic membership and dedi-cated volunteers helps the chamber achieve its goals. Join in; enjoy what Stayton and Sublimity have to offer and help us grow and prosper together.

Attractions...Brown House
Pioneer businessman Charles Brown built this 3,500 sq. ft home for his family in 1902. Members of the family lived there until 1928, when it became the community’s first hospital. The Santiam Heritage Foundation acquired it in December 2001 and is in the process of restoring the historic house on First Avenue and High Street, next door to the Stayton Public Library. 425 N. First Ave. 503-769-8860
Detroit Lake Recreation AreaBoating, swimming, hiking, horseback riding
and camping at east end of the Santiam Canyon off Highway 22. Pick up a map and check weather conditions at the Ranger Station. Hours: Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Memorial Day - Columbus Day: 7 days a week 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. 44125 North Santiam Hwy SE, Detroit. 503-854-3366

Regional ParksLocal parks Fishermen’s Bend, Niagara,
Minto, and Packsaddle offer fishing, wading
and picnicking opportunities. Niagara acquired its name in 1890 when pioneers platted a town complete with hotel, store, homes and a tavern. The remains of a masonry dam destroyed in 1901 provide a spectacular backdrop for the river. Located 2 miles east of the City of Gates off Highway 22.
Saint Boniface ChurchIn 1889, the first
peals of the new bell at St. Boniface Catholic Church rang out clearly on New Year’s Day. Sadly, the bell rang out for the untimely death of the Sublimity church’s first resident pastor, Father Werner Ruettimann, 32, a native of Switzerland. He was instrumental in helping the Sisters of St. Mary open the first parochial school in Marion County in 1888. 375 SE Church St., Sublimity.
Santiam Golf ClubFounded and developed by local golfers in
1957 this 18-hole course offers easy access, a pro shop, restaurant and lounge. It partic-ipates in the Oregon Trail Sister Program
with 20 other courses in the region. 8724 Golf Club Road SE, Aumsville. 503-769-3485, santiamgolfclub.com
Shellburg FallsShellburg Falls Recreation Area offers oppor-
tunities for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and camping. Six miles of non-motorized trail managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry. Santiam State Forest, 503-859-2151; oregon.gov/ODF/northcascade/pages/waterfalls.aspx
Silver Falls State ParkSilver Falls State Park outside of Sublimity is
a standout scenic treasure. The 9,200 acre prop-erty is the largest state park in Oregon, featuring the Trail of Ten Falls, a 7.2 mile loop considered to be a moderate hike, 25 miles of backcountry trails for mountain biking, hiking or horseback riding, South Falls Day-use area with lawns, barbecue stands, picnic shelters, tables, a playground, horseshoe pits, an off lead area for dogs, and a creek, plus campgrounds with tent sites, RV spots and cabins. Reservations: 800-452-5687; oregonstateparks.org
Star CinemaHollywood first-run features and commu-
nity events are presented in this 311-seat theater. It maintains its original charm – the theatre opened in 1926, moved to its present

The Stayton-Jordan Bridge is one of more than 30 covered bridges in the Willamette Valley. The Jordan Bridge originally spanned Thomas
Creek, east of Scio. When Linn County slated the historic structure for replacement in 1986, Stayton history buffs came together to bring the bridge to Pioneer Park. Stop by the Chamber office for detailed directions to our local covered bridges.

The North Santiam River region will be among the best spots in the nation to view the total eclipse of the sun on Aug. 21, 2017.
“People will already want to have their viewing spot secured for the morning of Aug. 21,” said Kelly Schreiber, president/CEO of the Stayton-Sublimity Chamber of Commerce.
“Together we can make the Great Eclipse of 2017 a memorable event for everyone.”
The first total solar eclipse touching the continental United States since 1979 will touch down on the Oregon Coast between Lincoln City and Newport, with a trajectory that will run from the Pacific to Atlantic oceans. The eclipse will reach Oregon at about 10:15 a.m. PDT and exits the state at 10:27 a.m., according to greatamericaneclipse.com.
The “path of totality” will put many area cities, including Aumsville to Idanha, in darkness for about
two minutes at about 10:17 a.m. on Aug. 21. Eclipse projections are:
Aumsville 10:17:26 AM 2m 0s
Detroit 10:18:18 AM 2m 2s
Gates 10:17:58 AM 2m 1s
Idanha 10:18:23 AM 2 m 1s
Lyons 10:17:43 AM 2m 1s
Mehama 10:17:43 AM 2m 1s
Mill City 10:17:53 AM 2m 1s
Scio 10:17:24 AM 1m 58s
Stayton 10:17:31 AM 2m 1s
Sublimity 10:17:32 AM 2m 0s
Across the nation, the path will be about 60 to 70 miles wide.
“Cities throughout the nation in the path of the totality are in the planning mode for this monu-mental event,” Schreiber said. “Past eclipses around the world have brought a significant number of visi-tors to the areas in hopes of seeing one of nature’s wonders.”
Schreiber cited as an example the 2012 solar eclipse in Cairns, Australia that attracted about 50,000 to 60,000 visitors and provided some $100 million to $300 million in economic benefit to the region.
“Will YOU be ready?” she asked.
The recent Rural Tourism Initiative Group from our region is planning an inaugural River Festival in conjunction with the 2017 Eclipse as a means to engage visitors in hopes to create additional revenue and encourage return tourism to our area.
For information about 2017 Eclipse activities contact the Chamber at [email protected].

Eye Safety During Solar Eclipsesby Fred Espenak
Adapted from NASA RP 1383 Total Solar Eclipse of 1998
Partial eclipses, annular eclipses, and the partial phases of total eclipses are never safe to watch without taking special precautions. Even when 99 percent of the Sun’s surface is obscured during the partial phases of a total eclipse, the remaining photospheric crescent is intensely bright and cannot be viewed safely without eye protection.
Do not attempt to observe the partial or annular phases of any eclipse with the naked eye. Failure to use appropriate filtration may result in permanent eye damage or blindness.
The same equipment, techniques and precautions used to observe the Sun outside of eclipse are required for the partial phases of total eclipses. The safest and most inexpensive of these methods is by projection, in which a pinhole or small opening is used to cast the image of the Sun on a screen placed (20 inches) or more beyond the opening...
The Sun can be viewed directly only when using filters s p e c i f i c a l l y designed for this purpose... One of the most widely available filters for safe solar viewing is a number 14 welder’s glass, available through welding supply outlets.
Aluminized mylar has become a popular, inexpensive alternative. Mylar can easily be cut with scissors and adapted to any kind of box or viewing device. No filter is safe to use with any optical device (i.e. telescope, binoculars, etc.) unless it has been specifically designed for that purpose...
Do not experiment with other filters unless you are certain that they are safe. Damage to the eyes comes predominantly from invisible infrared wavelengths. The fact that the Sun appears dark in a filter or that you feel no discomfort does not guarantee that your eyes are safe. Avoid all unnecessary risks.
Adventures on Foot• Hike behind a 177-foot waterfall at Silver Falls State Park.
• Backpack into the wilderness and camp in the Willamette National Forest.
• Birdwatch or take a wildflower hike in Stayton’s Wilderness Park.
• Forage for mushrooms in the forest.
• Hunt for deer, elk, bear, birds – and even Big Foot.
• Ski cross-country or snowshoe in one of our nearby US Forest Service sno-parks

What makes Stayton and Sublimity a great place to raise a family, build a business and enjoy life? Ask 10 people and you’ll get 10 answers — there are so many reasons to love it here. Crops soak up the sun and rain; children soak up the traditions. Neighbors wave to each other, clerks smile when you enter the shop, youths shoot hoops on the street ’til dusk. To outsiders it might seem like a trip back in time, but to locals it’s just a normal part of everyday life.
LocationStayton and Sublimity are at the base of the scenic Cascade foothills at
the junction of Highway 22 and the Cascade Highway, just 11 miles from Oregon’s capital, Salem. They are 13 miles east of the Salem Airport and 80 minutes from Portland International Airport. Century-plus family farms dot the countryside. The beautiful mountain views beckon residents and visitors to nearby adventures. Detroit Lake, 30 miles east, offers boating, fishing and camping. A little further eastward, snowboarders and skiers can hit the slopes. The Pacific Ocean is an hour to the west. Portland’s big-city lights and amenities are about an hour north.
ClimateMountain-fresh water refreshes gardens, provides lush green lawns for
summer picnics and makes inner tube rides down the Santiam River fun. Average temperatures range from 33 - 46 degrees Fahrenheit in January, the coldest month, to 50 to 83 degrees in July. A hot spell does come along once in a while, bringing temperatures in the 90s. Average annual rainfall is 53.01 inches, concentrated in December, January and February. Sublimity’s elevation ranges from 485 to 565 feet above sea level. Stayton’s elevation is 430 to 569 feet. Most of the time when snow falls it dusts neighboring hills, not city streets.
PopulationStayton’s population has
reached 7,700. Sublimity’s latest numbers show a population of 2,600.

History
Drury Smith Stayton was the pioneer who gave each of his children a building site and enough lumber to build a home, the first step in turning a farm into a town. Postmaster Samuel McCauley honored the founder by naming the town Stayton. It was officially created by the Oregon legislature in 1891. The area that would become Sublimity had a primitive store and a post office by 1852, and in that year the town was officially named. James Denny, an early settler, felt the community should be named for the ‘sublime’ scenery. During the Civil War, Sublimity was all but deserted as settlers returned to their native states. It was resettled in the 1860s and by 1874 the town was growing once more. By 1878, Sublimity boasted a hotel and rooming house, store, Catholic church, saloon, blacksmith, and Ditter’s Store. The town was incorporated in 1903.

Chamber OverviewThe Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce located at 175 E. High St. in Stayton serves area businesses and organizations as we work to ignite passion for business success and community prosperity. The Chamber also oversees the Visitor Center, located adjacent to the Chamber office, which operates with the help of generous volunteers who share their time and talents for the common good.
The Chamber currently consists of one full-time and one part-time paid posi-tion, three Visitor Center volunteers, and seven Board members, all who work to promote a thriving business climate that enhances local economic vitality and community livability.
Most recently, Stayton Sublimity and surrounding areas have had measure-able economic growth, an increase of new businesses moving to the area, as well as an increase in the number of available jobs in the area.
In 2015-16 we’ve begun working on several projects that will continue to encourage and sustain growth that will enhance the community at large.
Aiding in Education & Business Partnerships
In 2015, the Chamber coordinated efforts with the North Santiam School District to bring a Manufacturing & Trades Day to Stayton High School. The program was attended by 8th graders and high school students from several area high schools and helped to introduce students to career opportunities that already exist within our local region. This career exposure assists Stayton High School students in completing a “Career Pathway”. These pathways help students gain relevant skills and will alleviate the struggle many local industries have in finding competent and skilled employees, allowing them to grow and expand.
Investing in Tourism Development
Through the efforts of GROW-EDC, the North Santiam River Region piloted Travel Oregon’s Rural Tourism Studio Accelerator. The Chamber was happy to collaborate on this training program designed to assist rural communi-ties in sustainable tourism development. A series of workshops and online training geared toward uniting communities throughout the North Santiam River Region from Scio, Aumsville and all of the towns in the North Santiam River corridor up to Marion Forks were held in an effort to create a regional tourism identity for enhancing local economic revitalization throughout the region. The workshops focused on tourism education, identifying regional assets, and laying the foundation required to take projects from idea to implementation.
Nearly 100 local citizens, business and community leaders attended the training sessions, from which three action teams were formed to:
1. Strengthen regional tourism networking
2. Develop a coordinated marketing strategy, and
3. Plan the first annual River Festival, a multiple day, multiple location event, connecting communities up and down the North Santiam River Region as a single travel destination
Chamber ActivitiesGreetersWednesdays, 8 - 9 a.m., September – June. The Chamber organizes an informal open-house style meeting hosted by a different business member or organization each week. It’s an hour of information, ideas, and networking. Light refreshments provided.
Santiam SummerfestThe last Saturday in July, this annual event, hosted by the Chamber, boasts an opportunity for marketing to thousands of potential customers as they come out to enjoy the booths, food, and family friendly activities. Location: Third Ave, historic downtown Stayton.
Educational ForumsThe Chamber organizes educational forums throughout the year on a variety of business related topics from marketing to business strategy and regional economic development initiatives.
AdvocacyThe Chamber works alongside other area chambers, lawmakers, and local business owners to discuss relevant concerns related to government mandates, and advocacy on such issues, as necessary, in cooperation with the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce.
CommunicationThe Chamber provides weekly emails, monthly newsletters, marketing materials, our website, and social media platforms for communicating with and promotion of our investing members and the business community at large.
Awards CelebrationIn February the Chamber honors local businesses and individuals for their outstanding service and dedication to our local community at our Annual Chamber Awards Luncheon.
InvolvementWould you like to help us promote a thriving business climate? Help increase community prosperity? The Chamber seeks passionate volunteers for many projects, committees, business retention and expansion, finance and budget, membership ambassadors, greeters, and more. You choose what fits your skills, interests and schedule.
Team meetings are currently underway. Interested in how you can get connected? Contact Allison McKenzie at GROW-EDC, 503-871-5188.
Enhancing Business OpportunitiesIn April, the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce hosted the first community discussion regarding how to prepare for and capitalize on the upcoming Great American Eclipse, August 21, 2017. What an excellent oppor-tunity to provide tourists with a great visitor experience that entices them to come back. For more information, check out the complete article on page 6.

You can talk to the jeweler who will be working on your jewelry here at Harold’s.
The big box stores can’t do that. They send it out to who and where?
We feature custom design jewelry. Diamonds & colored stones are a specialty.
