In Our Parish
August 4, 2019– 18th Sunday in Ordinary
Time
Jesus used the occasion in the Gospel today to warn his hearers and all of us today that our true security is in God. Everything and everyone else are false security. When we arrive at the doorsteps of eternity, all worldly power and wealth will fade away. We carry nothing with us when we leave this world except the love and goodness we have shared.
Today’s readings talk about our attitude towards possessions. Jesus wants us to respond to our instinct for security and happiness. Jesus wants us to use it not only here and now but also for eternal life by becoming not only rich in the sight of our fellowmen but much more so by becoming “rich in the sight of God.”
Jesus is our priceless treasure. He reminds us all today to put in the right perspective our longing for the things we need for a descent, secured life. Let us then pray for the grace to put everything in life in the right perspective, in the perspective of Jesus.
Let us keep on loving as Jesus did. Amen.
From Fr. Steve
JOIN US FOR EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AT STAR OF THE SEA
ON SEPTEMBER 5th FROM 8:30AM UNTIL 3:00PM A Few Benefits of Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration #1 – Every Holy Hour we make so pleases the Heart of Jesus that it is recorded in Heaven and retold for all eternity! (Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta) #2 – The spiritual lives of our families are strengthened through our Holy Hour. (Blessed John Paul II) #3 – All the angels of heaven gaze in ecstasy at the image left on your soul after each holy hour you make in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. (Excerpt from ‘Letters To A Brother Priest’) #4 – The only time our Lord asked the Apostles for anything was the night He went into agony. Not for activity did He plead but for an Hour of companionship. (Archbishop Fulton Sheen) #5 – A Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament is worth more than a thousand years of human glory. (St. Padre Pio) #6– There is no doubt that a flood of graces will descend upon your family and the world if more souls would become docile pupils of adoration. (Blessed Pope John XXIII) #7 – Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament consoles a soul far beyond what the world can offer. (St. Alphonsus Ligouri) Although the door is open to all, we do need people to commit to being an honor guard for just one hour to ensure Our Lord is never left alone. Please prayerfully consider participating in this beautiful devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. POC: Dick and Sue Meeker, [email protected], 757-228-7775.

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught us about special blessings called the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-10). Jesus shared with us that the Beatitudes can help us to live happy, humble Christian lives. May we continue to love one another as Jesus has taught us and always trust in God’s love for all of us!

Respect Life: Remember each day that God’s love for each of us is generous, sacrificial, life-giving, and forever! May we have a deeper and profound understanding how precious and immeasurable all life is, especially that of every person from conception to natural death. Learn more about Respect Life at www.usccb.org/respectlife
God of life and love, you created us in your image and sent your Son to bring us life. Instill in us a respect for all life, from conception to natural death. Empower us to work for justice for the poor. Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect. Bring us one day into the glory of everlasting life. We ask through Christ our Lord. AMEN.
Migrant Ministry: We had wonderful visits this week! The workers are welcoming the cooler weather after those stifling hot days. We visited two camps we had not been to. One of them had several children between the ages of 2-5. As it happened, we had a new family join our group this week and they brought along their young children and some of the toys they had out-grown. We were blessed to be able to watch God work through these little ones. When we arrived, the workers had not yet re-turned but the children and their caretaker were there so we waited for about a half hour. During this time, the new family unloaded the toys they had brought for the children, which included a small bicycle with training wheels. We spent the next 30 minutes watch-ing the two children from our group interact with the little ones from the camp. The older boy who is six very patiently helped the little ones with the bicycle while his little sister (4) raced around the yard with her new found friends. There was hide and seek, a relay race and just genuine friendship! It was a great reminder that we not only provide sheets, towels and toiletries, but friend-ship! Thank you for your continued donations and prayers!
