“Where  real  world  practical  experience  meets  academic  rigour”    Overview    An  unhappy  stakeholder  with  a  cell  phone  and  internet  connection  can  turn  a  problem  into  a  crisis  that  can  threaten  the  very  survival  of  your  company        Twenty  executives  will  spend  two  intense  days  learning  from  and  with  global  experts  on  how  to  effectively  engage  stakeholders  in  emerging  markets.  This  course  is  a  practical  blend  of  lectures,  case  studies,  discussions,  dilemma-­‐solving  group  work  and  individual  reflection.  The  two-­‐day  programme  combines  real-­‐world  tools  and  strategies  with  strategic  insights  and  down-­‐to-­‐earth  approaches.  These  will  equip  executives  to  engage  and  work  better  with  stakeholders  especially  in  lean  or  frontier  markets.    Objectives  &  Learning  Outcomes    The  programme  objective  is  to  provide  participants  with  insights,  understanding,  tools,  techniques,  strategies  and  networks  that  will  help  them  and  their  companies  to  be  more  effective  at  engaging  and  working  with  stakeholders  in  what  used  to  be  known  as  emerging  markets  –  now  frontier  markets.

 About  the  Course  Leaders    Tobias  Webb    Toby  has  spent  the  last  15  years  analysing  how  leading  companies,  and  laggards,  are  responding  to  the  changing  role  of  business  in  society.  He’s  organised  or  overseen  more  than  150  business  conferences,  training  workshops  and  meetings  on  business  strategy  since  1999.  As  founder  of  Ethical  Corporation  since  2001  Toby  has  interviewed  hundreds  of  leading  managers  and  CEOs,  worked  with  NGOs  and  for  the  last  five  years  taught  Applied  Corporate  Responsibility  at  Birkbeck,  University  of  London,  where  he  develops  and  leads  executive  education  programmes.  As  a  consultant,  advisor  and  trainer  he’s  worked  in-­‐depth  with  some  of  the  world’s  largest  companies  and  frequently  visits  lean  and  frontier  markets  to  host  training  and  work  with  large  companies.  In  2014  he  founded  Innovation  Forum  and  having  advised  the  UK  Prime  Minister  on  responsible  business  from  2006-­‐9  now  advises  the  Government  of  Ghana  on  the  development  and  implementation  of  their  national  CSR  framework.      Wayne  Dunn      Wayne  brings  a  unique  blend  of  practical  experience  and  academic  rigour  to  the  program.    A  Professor  of  Practice  in  CSR  at  McGill  University,  Founder  and  Executive  Director  of  the  CSR  Training  Institute  and  a  globally  recognized  practitioner  with  over  20  years  of  award  winning,  practical  stakeholder  and  sustainability  project  experience  advising  companies,  governments,  communities  and  international  organizations  in  the  space  where  business  meets  society.  Someone  who  has  been  there,  working  with  Indigenous  Peoples  in  the  Americas,  helping  the  African  mining  industry  address  HIV/AIDS,  building  stakeholder  partnerships  across  industries,  geographies  and  sectors.    Recently  he  developed  an  Executive  Program  on  CSR  for  McGill  University  and  led  deliveries  of  the  program  in  North  America  and  Africa.    Current  projects  include  advising  the  government  Ghana  on  the  development  and  implementation  of  a  national  CSR  framework,  advising  an  Amazonian  Indigenous  community  on  relationships  with  the  petroleum  industry  as  well  as  other  strategic  and  advisory  services  worldwide.    Sean  Ansett    Sean  is  the  former  Interim  Executive  Director  of  the  Bangladesh  Safety  Accord,  former  Corporate  Responsibility  Director  at  Burberry  and  at  Gap  Inc.  Sean  is  currently  Chief  Sustainability  Office  at  Fairphone.  In  his  session  Sean  will  deconstruct  Gap  Inc.'s  stakeholder  strategy  that  he  developed,  including  insights  into  innovating  strategy  and  process  at  the  global  retailer  and  unpacking  issues  such  as  influencing  leadership  and  drivers,  dilemmas  and  opportunities  in  partnerships  and  cutting  edge  transparency  and  engagement.

Ignacio  Gavilan  

Ignacio  Gavilan  has  considerable  experience  in  sustainable  supply  chains,  stakeholder  engagement  &  government  relations  in  international  markets.  He  is  currently  providing  strategic  advice  and  developing  consultancy  projects  for  M&As  in  renewable  energy,  sustainable  agriculture,  marine  services  and  extractive  (mining,  oil&gas)  companies  in  fast  developing  markets.  Most  recently  he  managed  the  reputational  impacts  for  mining  operations  (environmental/social)  of  Anglo  American  in  Venezuela,  Colombia  and  Brazil  under  political  regime  changes,  risks  of  asset  nationalisation,  NGO/civil  society  campaigns.  Ignacio  developed  the  Global  Sustainability  Strategy  for  BP  Biofuels  with  an  emphasis  on  management  systems  and  standards  development  for  different  feedstocks.  Implementation  of  inclusive  business  models  that  enabled  development  among  the  communities  where  biofuels  are  produced.  He  also  has  eight  years  of  supply  chain  management  experience  with  the  McDonald’s  Corporation  and  Intertek,  an  international  consulting  firm.  

Dr  Peter  Davis    Dr  Peter  Davis  works  with  companies  and  governments  to  help  them  understand  and  manage  complex  societal,  political  and  ethical  challenges.  Between  2006-­‐2009,  Dr  Davis  co-­‐chaired  David  Cameron’s  Working  Group  on  Responsible  Business  Practice.  He  has  worked  extensively  with  the  Government  of  Sweden  on  engaging  the  corporate  sector  in  overseas  development  policy,  and  is  now  working  with  them  on  the  role  of  the  private  sector  in  conflict.  He  is  also  working  as  political  economy  advisor  to  the  British  Department  of  International  Development  on  a  business  environment  reform  project  in  Nigeria.  His  book,  Corporations,  Global  Governance  and  Post-­‐Conflict  Reconstruction  was  published  by  Routledge  in  2012.  He  is  also  a  member  of  visiting  faculty  of  Henley  Business  School.

Session  One  –  The  Business  Case  &  Engagement  Trends    In  this  first  session,  Tobias  Webb  will  offer  an  overview  of  today’s  global  business  case  for  stakeholder  engagement  beyond  just  compliance.  Using  case  studies,  this  first,  scene-­‐setting  presentation  will  look  at  some  of  the  current  and  emerging  trends  in  stakeholder  engagement  and  best  practice  in  two  way  communications  for  companies

Session  Three  –  Case  Study  -­‐  How  the  best  companies  engage  stakeholders  in  emerging  markets    In  this  session,  with  some  guest  speakers  and  practitioners  taking  part,  we’ll  look  at  some  quick  case  studies  of  how  lean  and  frontier  market  stakeholder  engagement  is  best  done  on  the  ground,  and  consider  some  of  the  mistakes  executives  should  avoid…

Session  Four  –  Group  work:  Tackling  real  life  case  studies  of  stakeholder  management    One  worked,  one  didn’t.  We’ll  compare  and  contrast  social  license  success  and  failure.  Our  case  will  cover  the  same  company  and  the  same  country,  and  analyse  different  outcomes  from  different  approaches  to  engagement

Session  Six  –  Managing  from  the  stakeholder  perspective:  Groups  will  be  asked  to  look  at  a  management  dilemma  from  the  perspective  of  different  stakeholder  groups      In  this  role  playing  session.  executives  will  be  placed  in  groups  representing  key  stakeholders  and  given  a  scenario  to  react  to.  Each  will  then  respond  as  stakeholders  might  to  a  situation  which  a  company  must  manage.  Groups  will  include  communities,  NGOs,  the  media  and  government  institutions.

Session  Eight  –  Creating  personal  action  and  development  plans    In  this  short  sharp  session,  each  individual  executive  participant  will  be  asked  to  take  twenty  minutes  to  reflect  on  what  they  have  learned,  draw  up  some  key  lessons  and  formulate  these  into  a  personal  or  team  action  plan  to  take  back  to  the  office  and  put  into  place  over  a  month,  six  month  and  one  year  period.  Summaries  will  be  presented.
