ST. WENCESLAUS LITURGY WEEKLY REFLECTIONS AND A WORD FROM THE PASTOR AUGUST 29, 2021
REFLECTING ON THE SCRIPTURES
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle B
Sunday readings: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8; James 1:17-
18, 21b-22, 27; Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Just Don’t Stand There
Some people like being a Christian more than act-
ing like one. They know the basic stories about Jesus—that
he was born in Bethlehem, that he was baptized by John,
fasted in the desert, gathered disciples, worked miracles,
taught with eloquence, was arrested, tried, crucified, died,
buried and was raised again. And that’s all important to
know. But then that’s it. They pick and choose from the
way Christians live. Worshiping on Sundays, serving oth-
ers, making peace, confessing sins, forgiving others, con-
tributing to charities, practicing morals, and learning more
about religion—well, maybe yes and maybe no. Calling
yourself a Christian is easier than acting like one.
But James is having none of that. The Letter of
James in the New Testament, which we hear from in to-
day’s second reading, takes a strong position about the im-
portance of acting, not just being. “Be doers of the word
and not hearers only,” James says. Otherwise, you delude
yourselves.
The Word of God comes to us in many ways—at
church, in private prayer, in spiritual conversation and in
the events of our daily lives. If we are alert to God’s pres-
ence, we will hear the Word. But God usually speaks in
order to get something done, and thus, God would like a
little action. Hearing the Word is good—a lot of people
don’t even take the time to do that. But acting on the
Word—that’s what makes pure religion. Lectionary Bulletin In-
serts: Reflections on the First and Second Readings, Year B © 2019 Archdiocese

I'm happy to have a
chance to write to
you all once again while Fr. Tom is on a
well-deserved vacation!
At the beginning of this new school year,
I've been spending a lot of time with young
people. Last week, we had the joy of seeing our nearly
900 St. Wenceslaus students together in our new church
for our first all-school Mass. I also have the privilege of
providing some regular pastoral support this year to the
over 700 students of Skutt Catholic High School, at the
request of Archbishop Lucas. I've had two all-school
Masses with them in the past week.
Young people are worth our spiritual investment. We
shouldn't allow ourselves to become hopeless with the
current state of the world and the rise of secularization.
Many of our students are already in love with Jesus
Christ! Personally, I am a product of a parish and school
community who chose to invest in my spiritual formation.
Besides my own Catholic education, I was tremendously
assisted by a group of adults who gave of themselves to
provide us with retreats, youth group nights, and faith-
filled social events. These opportunities made me face
the most important questions, even at 17 years old.
It's no secret that many of my fellow millennials have not
established or maintained a relationship with Jesus and
His Church. Not even a Catholic education and tens of
thousands of dollars of tuition can guarantee a student's
choice to practice the Catholic faith in adulthood. So what
are we to do? The situation is complex, and so the an-
swer is complex. But allow me to offer two simple recom-
mendations:
First of all, if you are a parent or grandparent who blames
yourself for your child's rejection of the faith, please stop.
Self-blame wastes too much energy. The "I should
have..." or "What if I would have..." questions lead us out
of reality, and turn us in on ourselves. Please stop blam-
ing yourself for the decisions of your children.
Secondly, trust the influence of your own authentic life of
faith. We don't just need teachers or arguments. We
need witnesses. We need parishioners who are in love
with Jesus, who have a daily, lived, personal relationship
with Him. Your witness will change hearts, so long as it is
authentic.
I offer my thanks to so many of you who offered your
support and donations to Fr. Vijay of the Pallottine Fathers
who visited us last weekend. Your generosity accumulat-
ed over $9,000 to be sent for the missionary work of the
Pallottine Fathers in India.
Peace,
Fr. Taylor
LITURGY CORNER The Letter of James
For six Sundays our second reading will be taken
from the Letter of James. This epistle (letter) is often re-
ferred to as the “catholic” Letter of James, with “catholic”
meaning “universal” – it was not written to any particular
person or community. The letter addresses many aspects of
faith and morals and calls upon the followers of Jesus to not
only have faith but good works as well. Later in the letter
we hear about the anointing of the sick.
The author of the letter simply calls himself,
“James, a slave of God and our Lord Jesus Christ." Jesus
had two apostles named James, but scripture scholars be-
lieve that it is unlikely that either of these wrote the letter.
Rather, some evidence points to James, the brother
(kinsman) of Jesus, to whom Jesus evidently had made a
special appearance after his resurrection. This James was
prominent among the disciples and became the first bishop
of Jerusalem.

ST. WENCESLAUS ADULT FAITH FORMATION OMAHA, NEBRASKA
There is a
story told
by Fr. An-
thony De
Mello, a Jesuit priest in India, about two
men discussing Mumbai (formerly known
as Bombay). The first man asks the second if he has ever
seen Mumbai and if so, to describe it. “Oh yes,” the sec-
ond man replies, “Mumbai is rectangular in shape, and
green with white letters.” “That is not Mumbai.” he is
told, “That is only the sign for Mumbai!”
That story came to mind as I reflected on today’s read-
ings. It sounds almost humorous that the second man
mistook the sign for Mumbai as the city itself. The only
way he would have made that mistake, I imagine, is that
he didn’t know what Mumbai was. It made me wonder if
the Pharisees and scribes really knew what faith was. It
seems they had mistaken the laws (outward signs of
faith) for their faith.
Are we that much different? Do we sometimes go
through the motions of our faith (i.e., reciting formulaic
prayers, showing up for Mass, reading the Bible) with-
out paying attention to our interior life? Do we run the
risk of the same misunderstandings of the Pharisees who
focused on the external practices of their faith without
examining their own hearts?
At some point in our spiritual lives, we must make the
journey from the head to the heart. At some point, we
need to stop confusing the practice of our faith with the
development of our relationship with God. They are con-
nected, but the practices only point us in the right direc-
tion to a deeper relationship. They are not in and of
themselves, the relationship.
In the letter from James we hear, “Be doers of the word
and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.” (Js 1:22)
What might this mean in the context of recognizing a
relationship with God? Maybe it means opening our-
selves up to the invitation to a genuine, personal rela-
tionship with God and not just hearing about it. When
we do, we may find that everything about our lives be-
comes richer and fuller---just as a city is to a mere sign-
post.

A psalm of David.
Lord, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy mountain?
Whoever walks without blame,
doing what is right,
Speaking truth from the heart;
Who does not slander with his tongue,
does no harm to a friend,
never defames a neighbor;
Who disdains the wicked,
but honors those who fear the LORD;
Who keeps an oath despite the cost,
lends no money at interest,
accepts no bribe against the innocent.
Whoever acts like this
shall never be shaken.

ST. WENCESLAUS PASTORAL MINISTRY OMAHA, NEBRASKA
August Charity of the Month
Heart Ministry Center: The Heart Ministry Center started
nearly 40 ago in response to increased requests in the
north Omaha community seeking food, clothing, shelter,
and financial assistance. The Center has always aimed to
assist people needing life’s most basic necessities but has
expanded in recent years. The Center is now also provid-
ing free medical, dental, vision, mental health, and legal
services. The Center has a social work/case management
program and a Fresh Start job training and placement pro-
gram that supports people on their path toward self-
sufficiency. The Center has also opened a social enterprise
laundromat and provides free and reduced laundry for
struggling families with school-aged children. The Center’s
guiding motto is "Dignity For All."
In 2020, the Center distributed over 5 million pounds of food
to over 150,000 total clients, provided social work/case
management services to over 7,000 clients, distributed over
$750,000 in direct financial assistance in the form of rent
and utilities to those impacted by the pandemic, and medi-
cal/dental services for more than 1,000 people. Your mon-
etary donation placed in this month’s Charity of the Month
envelope will go to the Heart Ministry Center.

This form of Tai Chi was devel-
oped by a team of researchers at
the Oregon Research Institute.
The program uses eight forms that
have been derived from the tradi-
tional 24-form Yang-style Tai Chi.
Taught by a certified instructor, this type of exercise has
many benefits, primarily prevention of falls using move-
ments that are biomechanically efficient, using the least
amount of effort and adapted to all fitness levels. Placing
weight on one foot at a time in a slightly flexed position
leads to greater strength in the lower extremities and im-
proved balance. Additionally, participants benefit with in-
creased relaxation, flexibility, social support and integration
of body, mind and spirit.
