STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT:
“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love.”
(Galatians 5:13) We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the good life.” But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.

Another good resource that provides information on what the Church is doing about preventing child abuse (see the lines, something like in the upper right hand corner for a directory of the website) is at https://preventionusccb.org/ . Parents, please exercise your freedom in educating your children (and yourselves) in the virtue of chastity.
Welcome Sister Barbara Rapp, OP, as Pastoral Minister at St. Patrick Parish, beginning July 1. Sister Barbara will work part time. Since she will be a “Pastoral Minister” (and not a “Pastoral Administrator,” as was Sister Joan), Sister Barbara and I will be clarifying her responsibilities as she adjusts to the parish.
Vacation Bible School was held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church this past week. About 45-50 members of the Catholic, Lutheran and Methodist Churches in Salem participated, and as many adults helped in various capacities. Their theme, To Mars and Beyond, helped them explore where God’s power can take us in life. About 8 adults had their own sessions on a similar theme.
Avoid the Summer Slide drew 26 students from area schools to use math strategies, reading skills and science processes to help avoid sliding and achieve sharpness in education. Mrs. Dietrich, third grade teacher and Dr. Mumford, Stream Teacher, directed the program.
God bless all of us as we strive to live and celebrate out religious freedom.
Happy Fourth of July!
With love, prayers,
Father Bob Edwards

Dear Friends, For freedom Christ set us free….
For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters. - Galatians 5:1
The topic of freedom was mentioned a few times in my retreat days the week before last. Today’s readings speak in the sense of the true freedom Jesus allows us. This past week the U.S. Catholic Bishops promoted Religious Freedom Week 2019: Strength in Hope. They focus on prayer, reflection and action on religious freedom issues here in our country and abroad. You may go to their website at www.usccb.org for more information. Not all the information was time sensitive and is still pertinent in helping us mature in our freedom for which Jesus set us free.
Have you given your kids “the talk?” When I interview couples preparing for marriage, I ask them if they ever had “the talk” on sex from their parents. It surprises me that so many of them say, “No.” Going to the Bishops’ website can aid you in finding information you can use as a parent; for example: “Raising Chaste Children in a Pornographic World” (one selection from http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/pornography/index.cfm). …

Prayer Warriors wanted:
“First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone . . .” (1 Timothy 2:1). Are you looking for a way to extend your prayer life? Please prayerfully consider joining one of the two prayer chains at St. Paul & St. Patrick Parish. We offer two distinctly different prayer chains: one that requests prayer for people dealing with illness or unfortunate circumstances, and a second that offers the Divine Mercy Chaplet for people who are critically ill or dying (initiated by St. Faustina). The chain leaders text prayer requests to members, who are asked to offer the relevant prayers. That is all we’re requesting! If you are interested in joining this vital and meaningful ministry, please contact prayer chain leader Chris Huffman at 330-429-4231 or Divine Mercy Chaplet prayer chain leader Ros Hardgrove at 234-567-1863 at your earliest convenience for more information.

The Fourth of July is a federal holiday in the United States, commemorating the adoption of the “Declaration of Independence” 243 years ago on July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire. The legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain in 1776, actually occurred on July 2. Congress turned its attention to the “Declaration of Independence”, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it two days later on July 4, 1776, the most memorable epoch in the history of America. However, the country got its actual independence only on 3 September, 1783 when Great Britain formally abandoned all claims to the United States and signed the Treaty of Paris. Independence Day celebrations became common only after the War of 1812. On June 28, 1870, Congress passed a law making the 4th of July a federal holiday. People from far and near congregated to celebrate the day.
Have a Happy & Safe 4th of July!!!!
