I read the readings for this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time over and over again. The Gospel is familiar and one of my favorite. However, the 1st reading – I am not sure I have ever heard this reading – at least I don’t remember it. And, every time I read it, this line kept popping out at me: “I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot.” That is a very strange line and yet, when I read it, I picture the wooden pegs we have in some of the classrooms where students hang up coats and book bags. These pegs are very sturdy – they can hold a lot of weight, don’t break or snap, and don’t come apart. So many things in our lives today are not “pegs in a sure spot.” Public opinion rises and falls. I can be standing in the grocery line and see a person on the cover of Time or Newsweek and the next week or even at the same time they will be on the cover of the National Enquirer or one of those other gossipy publications. We can have lots of “friends” and “likes” on Facebook and Instagram one day, and then get left out or hurt by these “friends” the next day. Public opinion and social media are no place to find “pegs in a sure spot”! We don’t know the story of Shebna, the main character in the 1st reading. He seems to be the master of the palace but then he loses his job and is replaced. I read further on and even Shebna’s replacement got a pink slip. So I asked myself, “what is the point of this reading?” After a while this thought came to me – maybe this read-ing is suggesting that position, honors and titles are transi-tory things, not the foundation on which our self-understanding should be based and certainly not the “sturdy peg” on which Jesus wants us to hang our lives. Our identity and relationship with Jesus are things that will not pass away. The 2017-2018 school year begins this week and all of our “pegs” are in place. Classrooms are set up and ready for students, the school is immaculate thanks to our wonderful summer workers, and there is excitement as we continue to provide a strong Catholic education to our children. A second PreK3 classroom is opening, our enrollment is the highest it has been in over 10 years, and many new and innovative ideas and lessons are being planned for this year. The whole school will be learning about habitats and taking a field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. This unit is the focus of our STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) initiative. Through this unit we will learn how to care for God’s creation and heed the words of Pope Francis to “care for our common home.” A brand new Google Expe-ditions kit will allow classrooms to take virtual field trips anywhere around the world, furthering the engagement and deeper thinking of our students – you might want to stop by sometime and try it out!!! Thank you for your continued support of St. Patrick School. We take our commitment to preparing young Catholic boys and girls who will become leaders in our church and communities very seriously. We could not do it without you. Our school community prays for you every day during our morning prayers. Patricia O'Donnell, M.Ed., M.S.

The Bishops of Pennsylvania have approved a recommendation that
each Catholic diocese in the Commonwealth be dedicated to the
Blessed Mother in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the apparition
of the Blessed Mother at Fatima. The official dedi-
cation will be marked with a special Mass to be cele-
brated in Saint Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg at

ST. PATRICK’S is offering 2 COURSES of Walking With Purpose this fall.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 26 - 9:45a-11:15 am (childcare provided) OR THURSDAY, SEPT. 28 - 7:00p-8:30 pm Opening Your Heart is an incredibly effective guide to deep, lasting transformation of the heart. Join us as we take a
deeper dive into the questions that we need to wrestle with if we want to experience all that God has for us. For example: What is the role of the Holy Spirit in my life? How can I conquer my fears?
What are the limits of Christ’s forgiveness? Why and how should I pray? What is the role of suffering in my life?
Beholding His Glory shows us how all Old Testament Scripture points us to Jesus. As we look at the Old Testament people and events, we’ll encounter problems only Christ will solve, needs that only He will satisfy and promises that only He can deliver. We’ll learn to recognize and appreciate God’s plan for our own lives, His awe-inspiring majesty, and His desire for personal
intimacy with each one of us. *Opening Your Heart is a prerequisite for this course.*
Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Bible study that aims to bring women to a deeper, per-sonal relationship with Christ through personal study and small group discussions that link our everyday challenges with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. Info. go to www.walkingwithpurpose.com or [email protected]. Suggested Donation for Course/Book:$55
