DEDICATION
Vcry few, if any, of the founders of St. Mary's Visitation Pari h
are now living, but what a story of deep interest these forefathers in
the Faith can tell to the Parishioners of the present day - a story of
hardship and of devotion, a story of love for Christ and for His Church.
These pioneers were strangers in a strange land, but they fought a good
fight and kept the Faith and their names will be in benediction. The
fruits of their works and sacrifices is the Golden Jubilee of St. Mary's
Visitation Church. Their Chileiren shall rise up and bless them and
their children's children shall not forget them. To the mernory of these
noble pioneers and to their offspring, this Souvenir Book is gratefully
dedicated. May the Great and Omnipotent God who guidecl and
clirectecl the pioneers, rewarei their efforts with Eterna} Rest and may
their children continue in the spirit of Christ to cherish, to love, to
serve Gocl through St. Mary's Visitation Church.

St. Mary's Visitation Church, majestic in appearance, tancis a a symbol of the Faith of the people of Dickson City,
and a monument to the pioncers and founders of St. Mary's Pari h. How likened can this Church be to the words of the Master whcn He said, "The Kingdom of Heaven is likened to a mustarci seed, the least indeed of all the seeds; but w hen i t i grown up, it is greater than all the herbs, and hecomes a tree." ( Matthew, 13: 31) The beau ty and the grandeur of thc Church which we see today clepencis in great part upon the determination of the pioneers - a determination which was founded and based upon thei r great Faith in God. At the time of the founding of St. Mary's Visitation Parish by Fr. Bruno Gramlewicz, in 1890, there were numbered in the Parish archives, 40 families residing in the territary of Priceburg, later changed to Dickson City. The confi.nes of the Parish cxtended from the boundary of Seranten to the town of Forest City. Most of the inhabitants were Polish immigrants and their one desire was to build a Church wherein they could give worship and adoration to God. A small and humble Church, costing $4,000.00, with a seating capacity for 200 people, was constructed on Carmalt Street and occupied the pre ent site of the Rectory Garage. The original Church wa built by Fr. Bronislaus Iwanowski in 1892 and while thc main body of the Church was used for Church Services, the basement was utilized as a Parish School.
The advent of Fr. Joseph Dudkiewicz in 1899, marked the beginning of the formulation of plans for a new Church. As the immigrants continued to pour into the area, the Church became inadequate and it was the desire of Fr. Dudkiewicz to build a Church, six times as large as the existing Church. The major ob taele was money but this impediment was reduced in great part by a Fraternal Society of St. Joseph. It is related by the pioneers and recorded in the Parish archives that these devoted and energetic men and women walked as far as Forest City to subscribe funds for the new Church .
In 1909, the firm of Hancock, Registered Architects, was encraged and the sketch and specifi.cations of the proposed St. Mary's Visita tion Church were submitted to the Parish Committee for approval and acceptance. After much wrangling and sub titution of building materials, the specifications were advertised and bids were reccived for the construction of the new Church. The Con truction firm of Sykes submitted the lowest bid and built the present Church for $47,000.00. The Church was dedicated by the Mo t R everend Bishop, Michael Hoban, Bishop of Scranton, on ovember 26, 1911.
The problems confronting the pastor at that time were not only of a material nature but a spiritual one as well. As the surrounding communities grew in population, there was an increasing demand for !ocal Churches. It was amusing to read in the minutes of one of the Parish meetings, a delegation, representing the parishioners from the Ridge (Eynon ), requested that twenty-five cents of the fifty cents which they
were paying in Church Dues be allocated toward the buildincr of a Parish Church in Eynon. Thus it was, that St. Mary's Visitation Church became the mother Church of St. Mary's Czestochowa Church in Eynon, St. Anthony's Church in Throop, St. Michael's Church in Olyphant, Sacred Hcart Church in Mayfield and St. Stanislaus Church in Je sup.
With the death of Fr. Dudkiewicz on February 17, 1917, the Ordinary of thc Dioce e appointed Fr. Stanislau Szpatanski to the pastorate of St. Mary's Visitation Church. The groundwork had been laid but due to economic pressures, many cheaper avenues of construction were taken. The Parish Debt, at the death of Fr. Dudkiewicz, amounted to $25,000.00. The roof of thc Church, though recently constructed, leaked terribly and threatened the interior of the Church. The original roof was covered with tin and during the pastorate of Fr. Szpotanski, a new slate roof was installed which according to the minutes, at that time, "would la t forever." The interior of the Church was then decorated and painted in 1920 at a cost of $7,000.00. Paintings of the Visitation, the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, the Resurrection and the Ascension enhanced the beau ty of the Church. It is estimated that during the tenure of Fr. S7potanski, over $125,000.00 was cxpended upon the Church.
Even though the Parish was burdened with the establishment of a new Cemetery, the apparent need of a new School was ever evident. Classes were being held in the old Church building which was converted into classrooms. But a. the population increased, it was necessary to build a new School. In 1924, construction was begun and the School became a reality in 1925. Since the mining of coal was at its heig-ht, during this period, the time had come when the coal under St. Mary's property was to be removed. The farsightednes of Fr. Szpotanski is to be commended when di cu sions werc begun with the Hudson Coal Company to halt the mining of coal under St. Mary's. Agreement was finally attained and St. Mary's purchased the coal under its properties. The venture was a costly one but at the same time a wise one ince the Church, the School, thc Convent and the Rectorv arc free from any danger of mine subsidances. ·
During the pastorate of Fr. Szpotanski, requcsts were macie for a Church at Cierno. A Church was duly erected and a priest from St. Mary's Parish attended this Mission Church every second Sunday. Moreover, the Home for the Aged and the Indigent, located in Blakely, was in nced of spiritual care. Through the pastorai zeal of Fr. Szpotanski. a priest from St. Mary's Parish satisfied the spiritual needs of the faithful.
In recognition of his pricstly contribution to the Diocese and in recognition of the great strides of St. Mary's Parish, Fr. Szpotanski wa elevated to the rank of Papal Chamberlain, on February 21, 1930.
Upon th death of M gr. Szpotanski on March 10, 1943, thc Mo t RcY. William J. Hafey assigned Rev. Francis X. Dominiak to the pastorate of St. Mary's Visitation Pari h. Again thc words of the Ma ter are recalled, "A wise man build his hou e upon a rock. The rain feli, and the floods came and the wincis blew and they beat upon that hou e and it fcll not for i t was foundcd on a rock." (Matthew, 7: 26 )
The depre sion of 1929 and the unemployment in thc region had lcft St. Mary's in a dire financial stress. The Parish Debt amounted to $176,000.00 and it was difficult at that time to mcet the payment of the interest !et alone to rrducc the principal. Immediately after taking charrre of the Parish, Fr. Dominiak so enthused the members of the congregation that a ncw era of spiritual and material expamion wa tartcd. Fr. Dominiak realized it was fundamentally escntial that his parishioners rrain a deep spiritual love for
their Church and Our Lord before they could secure the many material things necessary for the adcquatc expansion of thc church propcrties. Through his superb administrative ability, and the cooperation of all of the members of the Parish. the parish indebtedncss was reduced to ashes on April 15. 1946 at a ceremony held in the Parish School.
Immcdiatcly thcreafter, nccessary alterations were macie in thc Church. New Confessionals were installed, the pews wcrc refini hcd and tilc flooring was installed throughout thc ai !es. The School interior was painted, linoleum and tile wcre placcd in several classrooms, an intercommunication y tern wa placed throughout the school building and new
sccretarial type de k were introduced into everal Classroom.
But demands were pres ing and the needs were rrreat. The Bernardine Sisters who stafT St. Mary's School, and who numbered nineteen at that time, were Iiving in a very smali, dormintory type, famiy building. Living quarters were cramped and the eon. truction of a new Convent wa imperative. Through the conccrtcd efforts of the Pastor and his flock , a ncw homc for thc Sisters, costing $135,000.00, bccame a reality.
If the plight of the uns was dire, the condition of the Prie t' Iiving quarters was disastrous . The original Rcctory, located at 604 Dundaff Street was removed quiet a clistance from the Church. Four Priests were stationed in the Parish and due to the tightness of li\'ing accommodations, the admini. trativc officc of the Parish was located in the School building. Plans for a new Rectory were designed and the building was occupied on May 4, 1951.
In the meantime, many other items had to be taken care of: Polonia Park wa acquired, Stainless steel towers replaced thc galvanized tin-co ered towers of the Church, two School Buses were inaugurated into the school sy tern, the Sarretuary was enlarged, the interior of the Church was washed and painting were retouched. A public address system was in-tallcd and wcalherproof gla was in talled throurrhout the
Church. The exterior of the Church was repointed and water proofed. Granitc steps replaced the outworn cement steps in the entrances to the Church. A new side exit was installed in the Church. Stained Glass windows were placed in the elearsloty Additional land was purchased and a playground
with parking facilitie was installcd bchind the School. Finally, a new heating plant wa. installed in the Church.
The death of Fr. Dominiak on Septernber l , 1957 ended the carcer of a great priest of God but it did not tint or hinder the prorrre s of St. Mary's Visitation Pari h.
Rev. Peter P. Niebrzydowski, Assistant Pastor of St. Mary's Visitation Parish from 1921 to 1924, was appointed Pastor of St. Mary's by the Most Rev. Jerorne D. Hannan, Bishop of Scranton, on October 9, 1957, and was elcvated to the rank of Dome lic Prelate by His Holiness, Pope John XXIII, on June 3, 1960. M gr. Niebrzydowski paid off the remainder of the Parish Debt of $22,500.00 and satisfied the arrcars of the Dioce an Budget Plan. The School Auditorium wa renovated and decorated, new tile placed in the school·· corridor and modern kitchen appliances were introduced into the School. Thc Cernetery wa beautified and placed on a perpetual care basis and the white marble Crucifixion Group which centers the Cernetery and overlooks Dick on City, repeats the words of Christ, "I am the Re urrection and the Life." (John 11 :25)
With the advent of the Golden Jubilee Year of the Church, plans were formulated to strengthen the structure of the Church and to remociel and renovate the interior of thc Church. In preparation for this great work, a new asbe to roof and a stainless steel drainage system were installed . The area walk-way covering the creek at the ide of the Church was covcred with reinforced concrete. The wooden sarretuary foor was tom out and replaced with reinforced concrcte. The boiler room was completely fireproofed and adequate storage rooms were eon tructed in the ba ement of the Church. The Sarretuary was enlarged and finally the Church was ready to take on a new appearance. Victor Zucchi & Son, Church Decarators and Artists, were engaged to carry out the work. A new marble Communion Rai! was installed. The Main Altar was designcd to encompa s a marble Altar and Tabernacle. New paintings were introduced. Tile was et throughout the Church. Weldwood and marble wainscoating were placed along the walls. New carpeting in the Sanctuary, new pews. a new design of elevated ~cating arrangemcnt in thc choir 1oft, a new organ, in brief, thc cntire Church took on an appearance of newness and beauty becoming to the house of God. The total cost of all this work exceedcd $170.000.00. It is noteworthy, that no special asses ment or drive werc conducted to accompli h this work. Through the benevolent and ever-guidina Grace of God and the admini trative ability of the Pastor, Msgr. Niebrzydow ki, the financial tatus of the Parish is solvent.
History can record the material accompli hments of St. Mary's Visitation Church during the pa t fifty years and records can show, too, the Sacrament that have been administered in St. Mary's Visitation Church during the past fifty year. : 9,639 Baptism ; 2,884 Weddings; 3,649 Burials ; 9,784 Confirmations. But while we can rejoice with all the deccis that are known to us, Heaven alone knows of the great consolation, the Grace that has been received through the in trumentality of St. Mary's Visitation Church. God, indecd, has vi ited His people when, through Hi Guidance, H placed St. Mary's Visitation Church in Dickson City. Ad multo annos.

This Society, composed mostly of the elderly women of the parish, adopt the Rule of St. Francis into their private lives. One of the oldest organizations of St. Mary's Visitation Church, these women, in great part, attend Mass daily. Their life is centered around the Church and their example is an edification to everyone in the parish. Many of the graces that have been showered upon St. Mary's Parish were merited, without doubt, by the prayers and sacrifices of these pious women.

Highly trained and well disciplined they have won the admiration of the Faithful and through their singing have given Praise and Glory to God.

The religious instructions of Catholics attending a secular High School poses a problem national in scope. Its solution, as far as the church is concerned, rests with the Ordinary of each diocese. It is for this reason that the Gonfraternity of Christian Doctrine, canonically erected by the Bishop, is recognized as the best agency operation to provide religious instruction for those Catholics of the parish vvho are outside a Catholic School.

Children in the elementary grades who do not attend a Catholic School for some grave reason are afforded the opportunity of a Catholic Education through the Gonfraternity of Christian Doctrine. Lay teachers, skillfully trained , impart the necessary Religious Education to these Children every week during the School Year. School Bus transportation is afforded those children residing a clistance from the School.
