PRAYING THE NEWS
May 15, 2016
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind…
Acts 2:2
O God, we thank you for your constant love and continuing renewal – of our faith, our hearts, our church, and the
world around us. Your Spirit is gentle but also strong – sometimes surprising
and startling us. Thank you for the prophets of our times, including Daniel
Berrigan, who are instruments for uncomfortable but necessary change. Help us open our hearts and minds to
the truths you speak through them. Holy Spirit, we trust in you.
Amen. †

I was born in Zulia, the Venezuelan oilstateparexcellence.I am a teachergraduatedinSpanishand literature, andpost graduated inschoolmanagement& adult education.During my first
months in Sugar Land, my life revolvedaroundSt.Laurence.Itwasmybeaconandbenchmark for what I did or planned tocarry out. The church seemed anextraordinaryorganizationandIadmireditsdiscipline and variety of ministries andprograms. Upondiscovering theexistenceoftheLearnSpanishMinistry,Iknewthatitwas where, above all, I wanted to serve.Mytraining, experienceandpassionformymother tongue motivated me. Besides, teaching adults has been very satisfactoryand the results, amazing. With respect, Ishare with the parishioners the following:we should not live as escapees fromourselves, nor live outsideof our personaland parochial reality, wasting our innerwealthandincapacitatingustohelpothers.Exploring our inner selves and discoveringour hidden talents will make us muchbetter and open to help others. Toaccomplish this, the ministries of St.Laurence are there, as a range ofpossibilities, invitingustoaction.

AnswerstoyourquestionsfromtheCatechismoftheCatholicChurch.
Q.Whatisprayer?
A.Prayer is turning theheart towardGod. When a person prays, he entersinto a living relationship with God.Prayeristhegreatgateleadingintofaith.Someone who prays no longer lives onhis own, for himself, and by his ownstrength. He knows there is a God towhom he can talk. People who prayentrust themselves more and more toGod.Evennowtheyseekunionwiththeone whom they will encounter one dayfacetoface. Therefore, theefforttopraydaily is part of Christian life. Of course, onecannotlearntoprayinthesamewayone learns a technique. As strangeas itsounds, prayer is a gift one obtainsthroughprayer.
