TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
An old joke asks, “What time is Midnight Mass?” The an-swer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in hav-ing several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of “midnight” predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s celebration: John the Evangelist’s majestic the-ology of Christ’s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monaster-ies manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christ-mas is not a day, but a season. You still have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you’re officially late!--James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS
First Reading -- The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:22-27).Psalm -- May God bless us in his mercy (Psalm 67).Second Reading -- God sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but an heir, through God (Galatians 4:4-7).Gospel -- The shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had heard and seen (Luke 2:16-21).

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We celebrate again the magnificent moment in history when the Eternal Word of God
became flesh and made His dwelling among us!
He came to a broken world bringing peace, hope, and the promise of life everlasting.
He seeks to be born continually in our flesh! As His disciples, we, in His name, communicate the
same gifts to a world that too often chooses darkness.
I am grateful to all of you here at Saint Julie’s who reflect the light of Christ.
Through your YES, His love is made manifest, His presence is ever near!
A Blessed Christmas to You and Yours!
Lovingly in Christ,
Father Paul J. Hruby, and your Parish Staff.

DID YOU KNOW?Cell phone apps allow for hiding photos and messagesA review of a young person’s cell phone text messages may provide a parent or caring adult with informa-tion such as who your child talks to, where they are going, and what they’re doing. Unfortunately, all of that may be in the past. Today, some new cell phone text messaging services keep cell phone texting ac-tivity increasingly private. In order to protect young people, one must stay current and re-connect with ever changing technology. For a copy of the VIR-TUS® article “Vanishing, Self-Destructing Texting, and Electronic Communication,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.
