The Liturgy Corner Liturgically speaking …On special feasts, our deacons dress differently than usual. He wore
a vestment similar to the priest. What is that called?
The outer garment worn by a deacon is called a dalmatic. The dalmatic is a sign of service, recalling the garb of a servant.
Often the dalmatic is similar in style and color to that of a priest’s, called a chasuble. But the dalmatic is different in two
ways. First, it is generally used for more solemn Masses and feasts and is not necessary for all Masses. Secondly, it has sleeves
whereas the chasuble does not. Often it has two parallel stripes on either side. But most of the time, the deacon wears the
stole across the chest for Mass, without using the dalmatic.
One interesting bit of trivia is that the dalmatic traces its roots to Greece and the town of Dalmatia, the same place that bred
Dalmatian dogs. Also at one time, a priest wore a dalmatic as well as a tunic under the chasuble, reflecting all three of the
orders he received: sub-diaconate, diaconate and priesthood.

A Message from the
Safety Committee
The State of Connecticut has installed
crosswalk warning signals at both
churches. The signals are activated by pushing the button on
either side of the street. Please note signals are on a timer and if
there are multiple people crossing at any given time, it may
require the button be pushed again to reactivate the signal.
Please know that they are merely a warning signal to drivers and
some cars may not pay attention to the warning. These signals
have been installed for all of our safety, so please be sure to use
them and remember to be safe.

God of wisdom and might, we praise you for the wonder of our being,
for mind, body and spirit. Be with our children as they begin
a new school year. Bless them and their teachers and staff.
Give the strength and grace as their bodies grow; wisdom and knowledge to their minds
as they search for understanding; and peace and zeal to their hearts.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mass at St. Gabriel Church those who will serve as Catechists
will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry.
Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on
the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in
handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. This
year’s theme ‘Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ’ invites all
the baptized to devote themselves to a deeper study and
practice of prayer, for their own spiritual good and for the
good of those they serve. We invite all Catechists, parochial
school Teachers, Catholic high school Teachers, Bible study
and Adult Education Leaders, and RCIA Leaders to join us
at this Mass as we acknowledge and thank you in sharing
your time and faith with the children and youth of our parish
communities. Please join us following Mass for a reception in
St. Gabriel Church Hall.
