Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
READING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
All glory, praise, honor and thanksgiving to our
Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
ACTIONS FOR THE FAMILY OR FOR THE SELF:
• For a Sunday dinner, bake a cake/bread in the
shape of a crown to honor the Feast
• Make a good confession; Sit with Jesus at
Eucharistic Adoration
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER ON THIS FEAST DAY:
• What is my commitment to Christ the King?
• How do I follow Christ the King’s lessons of humble
service?
• How do I obey and live the law of love of Christ the
King?
• We can pray to Christ the King to guide us in the way of peace: peace in our hearts and
homes, our neighborhoods and nations, and our world.
As we come to the end of the liturgical year and look forward to the beginning of Advent, we honor our
Jesus, our beloved Lord – Christ the King.
It was not until 1925 that the Church officially proclaimed this feast. It was meant to encourage the
allegiance of all people to our spiritual ruler rather than to any person or power in this world. At that time,
Pope Pius XI declared that since Jesus Christ has authority over heaven and earth, every single person owes
Him the loyalty of our minds, wills, hearts, and bodies. Today’s Epistle reminds us, “He is the head of the
body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He Himself might be
preeminent. For in Him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile all things for Him,
making peace by the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:18-20).
Even as we hail Christ as our King, this reading impels us to recognize that His rule is one of devoted service.
The only way He could bring peace into this sinful world of ours was through the sacrifice of His life in
exchange for our salvation. While He lived among His people, Jesus wore a crown only once and that was a
crown of thorns. As we strive to do His work in building the Kingdom of God, we must be willing to follow His
way of love and mercy. We must care for those in need and treat one another with the respect and
kindness we want for ourselves. Moreover, we must accept the truth that trials and hardship were part of
Christ’s life. And so, suffering of some kind will be experienced by those who seek to claim a place in His
Kingdom. Let us patiently bear our day-to-day difficulties and do all we can to ease the burdens of our
neighbors. Let us offer Jesus our gratitude for life everlasting in His blessed company.

SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, December 15, The Nativity Prelude, following the 10AM Mass at St. Athanasius Church
The 3rd Sunday of Advent - also known as Gaudete Sunday - is a time of joyful expectation and eager preparation in
anticipation of the coming of the Lord: indeed a reason to rejoice! The Nativity Prelude serves as an introduction to
this great event. Let us rejoice in the nearness of Jesus’s coming!
Please join us for the Nativity Prelude on Sunday, December 15, at St. Athanasius Church, beginning with the
celebration of the 10:00AM Mass. Hospitality in the St. Athanasius Parish Activity Center will follow the Prelude.
Children’s Christmas Gift Program to
Benefit Catholic Charities
December 1 through December 15, 2019
The Christmas Gift Program which benefits families
and children serviced by Catholic Charities North, will
begin next weekend, November 30/December 1.
Please consider donating a child’s gift or store gift
card to benefit these families and children. Choose a
child’s age/gender from the Christmas Gift Program
table at St. Agnes, for whom you (and perhaps your
child of similar age) can shop for a Christmas
present. Return the UNWRAPPED gift to the gift
table on the following weekend. You may also
decide to donate a store gift card (Target, Walgreens,
etc.) so that parents can personally shop for their
child/ren. A final option is donation of grocery store
gift cards which help families in planning their
Christmas dinner. Catholic Charities will be picking
up donations on Tuesday morning, December 17.
Your kindness and generosity in donating gifts help
families and their children experience a special
Christmas morning. Thank you!
Planning for the 4PM Christmas Eve
Mass at RMHS Field House
This year is our 7th year of celebrating the 4:00PM
Christmas Eve Mass at the Reading Memorial High
School Field House! Many have made this a family
worship tradition and also use this time to be
involved in many opportunities that this town-wide
Christmas Mass presents. Ways to be involved
include: Angel Choir for children ages 5-10; The
Living Nativity for children ages 8-15; musicians; set-
up, break-down. SIGN UP TO HELP AT: https://

Keep Christ in Christmas
To Keep Christ in Christmas, we encourage families
to invite Jesus Christ into their homes this Advent
through family prayer and song around an Advent
Wreath or by displaying a Crèche. As members of
the Reading Catholic Community, we
Knights of Reading Council 1031,
want to make such celebrations
possible in four homes. After Mass
today kindly fill out your name and
contact information on an index card provided by
one of our members to enter into our drawing. We
will be offering an Advent Wreath
to one family from each parish and
a Crèche to one family from each
parish. Delivery to your home for
the First Sunday of Advent.
Toothpaste Drive to Benefit Inmates at
Norfolk Prison
A dedicated group of parishioners lead this initiative
to remember inmates at Norfolk prison at Christmas-
time. A small action can have a huge impact in a
person's life! This year, the collection will be for large
tubes of toothpaste (7.8 oz). Collection bins will be
located at the St. Agnes church entrances. Drop off
your donations between now and December 15.
Visiting the imprisoned is one of the seven corporal
works of Mercy: for those unable to visit in person,
may this collection be a way to visit in Spirit!

DYNAMIC PARISH UPDATES:
Bigger Future Survey 2019: As announced last weekend, the Dynamic Parish “Bigger Future Survey” is
kicking off this weekend at every Mass. If you cannot attend Mass in Reading this weekend, you can take the
online version of the survey at www.BFS19.com, through December 3rd. If you prefer to take the survey in
paper form, you can pick up a paper version at the back of the church. Please return surveys by December
3rd. We ask all adults to complete the survey. Children who are 10 or older are also invited to complete the
survey.
As part of our five-year partnership with Dynamic Catholic, this survey will serve as a foundation to help the
Reading Catholic Community grow in powerful ways. As Matthew Kelly says in his video: “God always wants
our future to be bigger than our past. Not equal, but bigger, better, brighter and more significant than the
past. God wants your future, the future of your parish and the future of the church to be bigger and better
than ever before.”
The Dynamic Parish model of parish renewal starts with the premise that God renews parishes one-person-at
-a-time. Dynamic Catholic believes that if a large enough number of parishioners become dynamic (i.e. adopt
the four signs of a dynamic Catholic: pray 10 minutes or more per day, study the faith in a consistent way, be
generous in sharing their financial resources and time/talent in service, and evangelize others), that the
parish community will be on a path to becoming a re-energized, vibrant, and truly dynamic parish.
