The Saco Lake environment is experienced by hikers in sequence: views, plant and animal lifeare understood as events along a path, yet at no point in time does the hiker experience the
layered composition of Crawford Notch holistically. In response to this, the proposed spa addi-tion seeks to act as a
containerofenvironments andforthe environment. The building is organized in the layers, the top acting as a winter-use spa, the loweuse spa, and the middle (entry point) as a utilities layer including bathrooms and chaware of views out of and through the building by means of three structural systemsand density. The densest system exists as a corten rebar mesh, which functions adebris, snow, ice, etc. can be caught and contained to create a visual weathering of

original interests for the project were expressed through a variety of mapping and diagramming excersizes in which density eld diagrams became
useful in illustrating the circulation/utilization of the existing site and spaces surrounding. program was placed based on this analysis with a conceptual
interest in resurfacing the existing brick eld of the ground plane in order to shape experiences across the site. the ground plane was broken down
and punctured to make connections to the large subway entry platform below.
the cementitious component relates dimensionally to the red brick on the s ite but is truncated and pierced based off desired visibility and sunlight. they
are parametrically offset and tted onto a steel framework which holds up the brickwork of the form. the component demarcates seating zones on the
site and provides articial lighting conditions at night

the entry experience of the building leads theuser through a exible gallery space that runs around the lobby andpartially up the 12 wide grand stiar to the above exible performance
space. the seating slices through the section of the building, while thestage is dropped slightly to emphasize its presence on the lobby levelwhile allowing for views upward and inward.
the middle of the building is pierced by the large y space above the experformance stage. this mechanical area is actually a functional partof the buildings program. as the building spirals upwards, circulationis drawn slwoly into this core. a graident of light is experienced as the
building is experienced as the building is traversed north/south. the y iscladded with texture warm glass and wooden louvers while other spacessurrounding sport channel and translucent glass providing a cooler andmore withdrawn affect.
the building terraces upwards, off of the footprint to allow for a larger entryexperience while supporting cantilevered spaces above for dance studiosand administrative ofces. ceiling hieghts vary based on programatticeneeds. the central y space is always accessible and open, providing a
differentiated spatial experience for some of the tighter upper levels.

the project takes a specic initiative in avoiding a top down conceptual strategy; as an alternative, experiences are
pieced together through a sequence of spaces that revolve around themes of openness and interaction for the
public and the dancers, although their programmatic functions are highly differentiated within the building. the
unity within the building is created by the large 3-story y space which short cicuits the linear openness of interior spaces.
