Brough sprints tovictory at Leicester

ROYAL Sutton Coldfield Ath-letics Club performed well inthe first Young Athletes Com-petition of the year atL e i c e s t e r.

There were first-place fin-ishes for Ethan Brough in theunder-15s 200m (23.9secs) andLewis Duvall in the under-131,500m (4.57.0mins).

Also triumphing were Geor-gia Platt in the under-13 800mB race (2.40.0mins) and Han-nah Smith in the under-15 Bhammer throw (19.81m).

Lucy Wood claimed secondin the A hammer event(20.03m), while Brough also se-cured second in the 100m(12.0secs), as did PatienceClarke in the under-13 75m(10.8secs).

Rachel White was second inthe under-13 girls 1,200m(4.26.9mins) and her sisterCaitlin was fourth in the Aevent (4.16.6mins).

For the under-13 boys,James Ward was third in theshot and 200m B race. KieronHiggins got PBs in the 100mand 200m, as did David Iliffe inthe 100m B race. Iliffe alsoreached the coveted 3m markin the long jump.

In the under-15 boys’ sec-tion, Cameron Harris got PBsin his B 100m and 200m races,as did Joe Higgins and ChrisSissons in their 300m races,while Jack Griffiths threw20.42m in the javelin.

In the non-scoring 800mevents, there were wins forLucy Ollerenshaw and EmilySandbrook and a second-placefinish for Lucy Corker.

BOWLS: Sutton Park beat WestBromwich Supporters Club by 46shots in the Warwick League withGraham Ord (21-3), AlanMiddleton (21-10), Rick Green(21-11) and Chris Sheehan (21-12) in superb form. They thenbeat Streetly Sports by 46 shotsthanks to exceptional bowlingfrom Steve Yarrington (21-7),Green (21-10), Alan Middleton(21-10) and Ron Handsaker (21-14).

BOWLS: In the ErdingtonWednesday League, Wylde GreenBowls Club narrowly lost at homeagainst a strong Streetly Sportsteam by 15 points (133-148).Eddie Slattery (21-11), ValHomer (21-15), Frank Bartlett(21-19) and Joan Hargreaves(21-19) all starred for WyldeGreen. In the Sutton BenevolentThursday league, Wylde Green’sB team had an excellent 168-102 win. Frank Bartlett (21-10),Barrie Jones (21-12), RogerGreen (21-13) and Tony Brown(21-15) were all in excellentform.

SWIMMING: BoldmereSwimming Club produced 21personal bests and three newclub records in the 45thNational Arena League CupFinal at Cardiff.The Orcas finished last of theten finalists but simplyqualifying for the final – as WestMidlands Premier Divisionchampions – confirmed their topten status in England.The other clubs taking partwere Plymouth Leander,Stockport Metro, City of Leeds,

Now she is aiming to raisethe bar by fighting her wayonto the podium at the secondedition of the Youth Olympicsin Nanjing in August.

And buoyed by her 2013 suc-cess, the Sutton ColdfieldGrammar School for Girls pu-pil is adamant she can stillperform when the going getstougher at under-19 level.

“Getting a bronze medal atthe Cadet World Champion-ships in Miami last year is thebiggest thing I’ve done,” said

d o n’t even know how I man-aged to do it and there was nopressure on anyone from theBritish team as no-one reallyexpected us to do it.

“It might be a bit too earlyfor the Commonwealth Gamesthis year but I’m hopefully go-ing to the Youth Olympics inChina in August, so that’s mymain event of the year.

“I would like to do better butto even get a bronze in thatwould be a big achievement,it’s almost as big as theOlympics but for my age groupwhich is under-19s, so to evenbe there would be great.”

Piovesana can look to fellowBrit Jade Jones for inspirationshould she fight in Nanjing –the taekwondo player winninggold at the inaugural YouthOlympics in 2010 and thenLondon 2012.

Closer to home Gemma Gib-bons and Karina Bryant wonsilver and bronze respectivelyat the Olympics in 2012 and –almost two years on – P i ove s -ana is still feeling the effect oftheir success.

“Since 2012 British judo hasreally improved, especially ju-niors now. NETBALL: Little SuttonPrimary School havenetted some fantasticsuccesses on thenetball court recently.The Year 6 purple teamwon the Arthur Terrycluster tournament,while the yellow teamcame third, having beenknocked out in thesemi-final by the purpleteam.

The following day, theyear 5 team won theSutton Schoolstournament and theyear 6 side did thesame the followingweek. Lots of the girlsattend training sessionsrun by Little SuttonNetball Club, acommunity netball clubthat is run at ArthurTerry. It runs on a
