President’s message:Our first Training Day of the year was a great success. Thank you Larry Lawton for hosting the event. We had several new and potentially new members and the return of a veteran. Welcome to all! Larry gave an introduction to NAVHDA, the whoa-table, socializing and basic obedience training and finished with some retrieving training. We started off a few puppies on their first introduction to birds. We did some advanced whoa training with a whoa-board and distractions while the more experienced handlers did some field work.

Spring Test Entries: Our Test Secretary Mike Hubenthal has indicated there has been little or no inquiries about (and virtually no entries for) our Spring Test. If ANYONE is interested in participating in our Spring Test, please let Mike know and get your applications in. This advanced notice will help us with the planning for the test and bird ordering. New members with puppies, if you are interested in trying a Natural Ability Test, please let us know. We can work with you on these next Training Days to help prepare you and your pup.
Birds: John Swider is still working on securing a bird order. We may consider possibly ordering additional chukers with the thinking we could bring some for the Training Days preceding the Test. We are also checking on a supply for ducks. There could be several UT candidates this year that would need several ducks for training this year. We may consider a “bulk-order”. We will keep everyone posted as that progresses. If anyone knows of additional sup-ply sources, pass the word – folks may want some for their own home use. (This being highly encouraged, you can’t train a bird dog without birds)
Tent: As previously indicated, Scott is working on the procurement of a new tent to replace our old one, possibly at a sale price that even with sales tax may be lower than the originally quoted price. Thank you Scott for your efforts. We hope to have this secured within the next few weeks; we’ll advised as that progresses. Notice to all members – the rental of the tent to members has increased to $100. The tent must be picked up at the storage location and returned clean and dry.
Don
Hi all: As in Don’s email sent in February, I am taking over the newsletter for our chapter. My goal is to send one out between training days so as to summarize the previous training day and announce the next one.
Please email me with any short training articles, tips, notices, announcements, etc. Also, if you would like to list equipment you have for use at training days or equipment you would like to sell, I can include that in the next news-letter. Other helpful information such as bird availability or nearby clinics would be appreciated. If you have taken pictures at our training days, tests or outside of NAVHDA, they are welcome as well. My contact information is on the first page on the left.
This is a work in progress. If you have any suggestion feel free to let me know. I would like to have everything sub-mitted by the 1st of each month so I can get the newsletter out during the first week of that month.
Thanks! Jen

Training Tip of the Month
Break each event or action you aredesiring to train into its smallest compo-nent and repeat-repeat-repeat. Then try variations of the same component (or ac-tion) and then add distractions only when the dog is ready. Then assemble the whole event by adding one additional piece at a time. It confuses the dog by taking on too many sub-sequences or issues all at once.

Southern Tier of New York NAVHDA Chapter
We were certified as Southern Tier of New York Chapter of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) on January 18, 1985. NAVHDA is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to foster, promote and im-prove the versatile hunting dog breeds in North America; to conserve game by using well trained, reliable dogs before and after the shot; and to aid in the prevention of curelty to animals by discouraging nonselective and uncon-trolled breeding which produces unwanted and uncared for dogs. Many members have contributed to the success of this chapter and we thank them for their efforts. At the Southern Tier Chapter we strive to help members become confident, capable trainers with the goal of developing excellent versatile hunting dogs. We also emphasize fun, camaraderie and value the lasting friendships made along the way.
