TARDis – Targeting Academic Research for Deposit and Disclosure
• HEFCE – JISC Programme - Focus on Access to Institutional Resources (FAIR)
– Inspired by the vision of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) that digital resources can be shared between organisations based on a simple mechanism allowing metadata about these resources to be harvested into services
– To support the disclosure of institutional assets: To support access to and sharing of institutional content within Higher
Education and Further Education and to allow intelligence to be gathered about the technical, organisational and cultural c hallenges of these
processes…
• Funding to set up an institutional repository (e-Print archive)
• Other UK universities – Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc
• Aug 2002 – Jan 2005 (30 months) (£196,000)
TARDis – project aims
• Aim: to set up a sustainable Southampton e-Print archive– (open access archive /institutional repository)
==== e-Prints Soton ( importance of name …..)
– Enhancing our version of software– Feeding into EPrints software – future versions
• To gain content – full text documents– Offering a mediated service in parallel– Making easier to deposit– Advocacy– Project target – 2000 items– Pilot with 2 schools
Scholarly communication environment
• Majority of research output through journal publications
• Journals available on subscription
• Last 5 years– Library budget risen 12%– Journals risen 50%
• Restricts access – solutions……..
Solutions
2 complementary routes to Open Access to Research (all research should be freely available)
• Open Access journals• Open Access repositories
• Global declarations of support for Open Access
• UK House of Commons Committee report July 2004 supports Institutional Repositories
• Government response ; awaiting RCUK policy
• University Research Policy Committee support - UEG agreed sustainability for IR
An Institutional Research Repository for Southampton
• Institutional Repository for Research already set up (e-Prints Soton)
• Southampton University Research e-Prints – in UK in
the forefront - working with schools
• has capacity for adding full text (e-Prints) if available– Electronic copies of any research output e.g.
journal articles, book chapters, conference papers even multimedia
•Target – academic research•Creation of e-Prints Soton•Initial Advocacy•Environmental audit•Software redesign for IR•Mediation offered•Project cluster collaboration

Research Reporting Requirements:
University, National, International
•Demonstrate potential of IR as RAE tool•Import existing metadata•Collaborate with researchers to encourage proactive input•Address authentication and branding issues•Develop extra functionality
•Moving towards sustainable open access institutional repository•Proactive open access culture•Integrated research discovery – enriched resources: multimedia, datasets
Open Access Paradigm ShiftOther Institutional Repositories

IR Evolution
e-Prints Soton evolution
• Original intent to provide secure storage for the full text of Southampton research output (e-Print Archive in which post refereed pre published versions of papers are deposited by researchers)
• Strong steer - maximum benefit if the IR also assisted researchers with time consuming research reporting tasks :RAE, Univ. Research Report, web pages, research proposals, CVs etc
• IR - evolved to publications database with full text where available
Benefits to University, Schools and Researchers
• Secure storage of publications
– including theses and dissertations, technical reports
• Links to projects and web pages
• Research reporting
• University profile• School and discipline visibility• Researcher profile• Full text content freely accessible
• link to learning and teaching
Increased citationsArticles freely available online are more highly cited. For greater impact and faster
scientific progress, authors and publishers should aim to make research easy to access Nature, Volume 411, Number 6837, p. 521, 2001 Steve Lawrence “Online or Invisible?”

Potential of adding a link to your web page
High profile of e-Prints Soton – so give them full text and they would read
Global open archive search – OAIster http://oaister.umdl.umich.edu/o/oaister/
Future collaboration with schools
• Central to research recording and visibility
• Working to integrate into the research recording workflow
• Working to incorporate RAE data 2000-• Some support included for import
depending on availability of previous records
• Goal: self deposit plus support for new records with full text
Liaison Librarian Role
• Advocacy with schools
– RAE requirement for all records 2001- to be on e-Prints Soton by the end of 2006
– Self ‘archive’ - individualsSchool keyboardImporting records from school
databases
– Sensitivities – RAE records – School Full text -
Liaison Librarian.
Liaison Librarian Role [2]
• Validation of records
–Liaison Librarian to be editor for school/s• Quality• Completeness
Liaison Librarian Role [3]
• Metadata enhancement – value added elements
–e-Journal URL–URL for conference–Abstract cut and paste
–Natasha’s experiences …

Liaison Librarian – benefits of working with IR
• Forecast that most organisations will maintain an Institutional repository for the secure storage of an organisation’s digital assets.
– Libraries leading the implementation– IR will be a tool to enter deep into School culture– Opens dialogue with researchers– Offers in depth knowledge of school research
• Support for collection development
IR Future
• Discussion led by Mark Brown
