INDIVIDUAL/PEER RISK FACTOR:Friends Who Engage in Problem Behavior
Young people who associate with peers who engage in problembehaviors-- delinquency, substance abuse, violent activity, sexualactivity, or dropping out of school - are much more likely toengage in the same behaviors. This association is one of themost consistent predictors that research has identified--evenwhen young people come from well-managed families and do notexperience other risk factors; just spending time with friends whoengage in problem behaviors greatly increases the risk of
developing similar problems.
