SouthDakotaSymphonyOrchestraperformingstudentcompositions

EightstudentsandadultsfromtheSissetonWahpetonSiouxTribeandtheSissetoncommunitygettoheartheircompositionscomealiveonThursday,Sept.14andFriday,Sept.15,asprofessionalmusiciansfromtheSouthDakotaSymphonyOrchestra(SDSO)performtheworksforaudiencesinSissetonandAgencyVillage.

TheDakotaWindQuintetperformanceswillfeaturetheworksofSissetonHighSchoolstudentsRickyAlbrightandGarrettLawrenceandSisseton-arearesidentBryanAkipa.TheDakotaStringQuartetperformanceswillfeaturetheworksofSissetonHighSchoolstudentSamuelWilliams,studentAlannahLawrenceandSissetonarearesidentsDerrickLawrence,ShiraTomboulianandChrisWolcott.

Thefreeperformancesarescheduledfor:

• Thursday,Sept.14,7p.m.,SissetonPerformingArtsCenter(DakotaStringQuartetandDakotaWindQuintet)withalleightmusicianspresent

• Friday,Sept.15,9a.m.and10:15a.m.,TiospaZinaTribalSchool,AgencyVillage.(DakotaStringQuartet)

• Friday,Sept.15,12:30p.m.,SissetonWahpetonTribalHeadquarters,AgencyVillage(DakotaStringQuartet).Lunchwillbeprovidedbeginningatnoon.

• Friday,Sept.15,1p.m.and2:15p.m.,SissetonMiddleSchoolandHighSchool(DakotaWindQuintet)• Friday,Sept.15,2:15p.m.,TekakwithaLivingCenter,Sisseton(DakotaStringQuartet)

Theeightparticipants,alongwithsixBlackHillsstudentswhoseworkswereperformedinthatcommunitySept.9-11,teamedupwithChickasawComposer-in-ResidenceJerodTateandprofessionalmusiciansfromthetwoSDSOensemblesaspartoftheLakotaMusicProject.TheMusicCompositionAcademiesengagestudentsincreativeexpressionthroughmusicwithdailycompositionlessonsandactivitiesemphasizingculturalunderstandingandfindinghumancommonalities.

TheResidencyofJerodImpichcaachaaha'TateismadepossiblethroughMusicAlive,aresidencyprogramoftheLeagueofAmericanOrchestrasandNewMusicUSA.Thisnationalprogramisdesignedtoprovideorchestraswithresourcesandtoolstosupporttheirworkwithcomposersandnewmusic,capitalizingonthepowerofcomposersandtheircreativitytobuildnewpathsfororchestrastoheightentheirrelevancyanddeepentheirrelationshipswiththeircommunities.MajorfundingforMusicAlivecomesfromTheAndrewW.MellonFoundation,withadditionalsupportfromTheAaronCoplandFundofMusic,TheAmphionFoundation,TheASCAPFoundationBartHowardFund,theFrancisGoeletCharitableLeadTrusts,andtheNationalEndowmentfortheArts.

TheSouthDakotaSymphonyOrchestra(SDSO)isbasedinSiouxFalls,SouthDakota,avibrantandgrowingcommunityservinga125-mileregionthattouchesfivestates.Knownforinnovativeprogrammingandstatewideoutreach,theSDSOhasastrongheritageuponwhichtobuildanevenstrongerfuture.SDSOwasthe2016winneroftheBushPrizeforCommunityInnovation.

TheBushPrizeforCommunityInnovation,whichisgivenbytheSt.Paul-MinnesotabasedBushFoundation,recognizesorganizationsfortheirinnovativeworkincommunityengagement.Inaddition,theSDSOwasselectedasoneoffiveorchestrasinthecountrytoparticipateinathree-yearcomposerresidencythroughNewMusicUSA,whichbringsAmericanIndiancomposerJerodTatetoSDSOthrough2019.SDSOistheregion’spremiereperformingartsorganizationwiththeWashingtonPavilionasitshome.Artistically,SDSOisledbyMaestroDeltaDavidGier,whohasguidedtheorchestratonewmusicalheights.

ThecoreofSDSOiscomprisedofninefull-timeprofessionalmusiciansthatmakeuptheDakotaStringQuartetandtheDakotaWindQuintet.Musically,SDSOperformswellaboveits$2.3millionbudget.
