A Word About NumbersBefore we had EPD’s, a sharp eye was the best tool a cattleman had. A big-topped, thick bull increased dressing percent. An easy fleshing bull increased marbling. The individual performance was extremely meaningful and cow families helped increase predictability. Then came EPDs. Now we have a lot of information! Maybe so much information, we can easily get confused. How many things, can we factor into our bull selection process? How many things should we? Each of us need to make that decision individually and like everything else, hindsight will ALWAYS be 20/20. We are a little different than some Red Angus breeders. Good or bad, right or wrong, we work extremely hard to evaluate and mate our cattle phenotypically first, genotypically second and always strive to balance the two. Structural correctness, muscle, rib, volume and capacity, length and depth of body, good feet and legs, trump extreme EPDs in our operation. Individual Actual Performance means more to us than Estimated Progeny Difference. In describing our breeding philosophy to you, the point I want to make is this; I think we are going the wrong direction if we make our bull selections based ONLY on EPDs. You can build a house with a hammer but its a much better house if you use every tool in the box. We would enjoy visiting with you before the sale to help you find the right bull that you need based on your goals and the direction of your program. Let us know what we can do to help you.

Welcome to the Cattlemen’s Bull Sale,
Thank you for your interest in our cattle. I have been writing letters for bull sale catalogs for 25 years. It has always been my least favorite part of the sale process. What can be said this year that hasn’t been said before? I am proud of the cattle and the direction our programs are going, however, bragging is not becoming according to my elders. We can talk about the beef industry and the future of the cattle business (A pep talk), but then we all are already eternal optimists or we would not be in this business. Drought, feed cost, market prices all have been mauled over in coffee shops and feed stores all winter long. There isn’t anything new to report on those subjects.
So, what is it that inspires us to stay in this business enduring the challenges of Mother Nature, market reports and long hours of above average hard work? It can only be one thing, PASSSION. Dang, whoever thought you could develop such a thing over a four-legged crea-ture that chews cud? Passion fueled by Compassion!
I have to admit as I write this I just found out the Champion and Reserve Champion Red Angus Females at the Iowa Beef Expo were sired by our Herd Sires, Cowboy Cut and Rock Star. That’s pretty cool. I have to say they were shown by two young people from good families who have a passion for the cattle business. That Compassion for youth fuels our passion.
Duke Ranches bought a Cowboy Cut son on this bull sale last year. The bull, SLGN 1143Y, Yosemite won Grand Champion at Louisville, Ft... Worth and Supreme Bull at the South Dakota State Fair, where the judges said he has the potential of doing a lot of things right for the Red Angus breed. For the second year in a row Cowboy Cut sired the National Jr... Red Angus Show Grand Champion in Denver. Ravishing Reds sold a Jackhammer heifer to a junior who won her division at the same show. Mann Ranch made their debut at the NWSS this year and did very well! They’re going back next year. Success fuels Passion.
Progress develops Passion. Our customers are doing well. Allison Brown sold her Red Angus bred heifers at the Russell Livestock Mar-ket bred to Solution Genetics bulls for $2385/head. Quincy Week and Troy Jones sold their steers and heifers at the Red Angus Special Sale at Kearney Livestock and received $3 to $9/cwt premiums over other cattle sold that day. They have been buying bulls on our sale for several years. The Auctioneer stopped the sale when Kevin Sale’s Red Angus cattle came in a Kansas sale barn and told the audience “these are the type of cattle we all need to be raising.” Kevin, his brother and nephews have bought top end bulls from our sale for the last several years! Customer Success enhances our Passion!
We have Passion for the cattle business. Rock Star’s new EPD’s rank him in the top 3% WW, 1% YW, 3%TM, 2%ME and 1%CW. Cassie bought Rock Star as a three month old bull calf. Good job Cassie! Her passion has given her opportunity to judge cattle shows meeting fellow cattlemen and cattlewomen from coast to coast.
So here is the point, if you want to buy good bulls from good families who have a passion to develop breeding stock that work for their customers, join us March 11th in person, on the phone or over the internet. We would appreciate the opportunity to be Your Seedstock provider.
Sincerely, Dan

The first big calf crop of Rock Star calves solidified this bull as a true beef machine! He stamps his calves with the same bold features that he possesses, muscle, middle and moderation. His offspring come in an easy fleshing, eye appealing package that turns the heads of many good cattlemen. Rock Star is the sire of the 2012 National Western grand Champion Pen of Three Bulls. They were a big attraction in the Yards in Denver and were praised by the judge for their uniformity, muscle and rib shape. The Rock Star bull calves in the Cattlemen’s Bull Sale are a stout set of bulls that have exceeded our expectations every step of the way. His out cross pedigree makes him a unique breeding piece for several breeders and his outstanding performance adds to the marketability of his offspring. His dam has a picture perfect ud-der and the Rock Star heifer calves have been a big hit at the Red Legends sale as Rock Star females averaged $7,300. after seeing the progeny in Denver, genex has leased Latin america and South america semen rights. We suggest using Rock Star on bigger framed females that need added muscle, width and dimension. The semen packages offered in this sale will be the only semen available for the Spring 2013 breeding season. His rare combination of breed leading performance coupled with ex-tremely low maintenance energy makes him a stand out bull in the Red angus breed. Lot 2 is one of the most complete bulls in this offering. He stands on a wide base and has a tremendous amount of lower quarter and hip. He is long fronted, big topped, and is loaded with volume. This bull will add muscle and power to your cow herd with out sacrificing maternal traits. His dam Peek-a-Boo is one of our most well known donor cows in our program. She has produced Na-tional Champion females and high selling bulls. With Rock Star and Peek-a-Boo in this pedigree this bull is designed to work in a variety of situations. When you breed a foundation bloodline to a new up and coming out cross bull this is what you get! This stout powerfully de-signed bull does a really good job of com-bining muscle, volume and structure in a well balanced package. Blockana R91 fe-males are fantastic and we suggest keeping replacement females from this bull. take a good look sale day, he is a very complete herd bull prospect.

a pair of full brothers from a National Champion female and the powerful Rock Star. Lot 5 is a top herd bull prospect in our opinion. Fantastic performance numbers combined with more muscle than we have ever seen in the Red angus herd. He may be the smooth-est made son of Rock Star to date. The dam is a two-time National Champion Female and a cornerstone of our donor program. a sale highlight with pedigree, performance and phenotype. This guy is a stud in every aspect.Lot 4 has a current weight of 1875.

timberlake progeny have been known for producing stout low maintenance bulls and the timberlake daughters make tremendous cows. They have beautiful udders and plenty of milk. These two flush brothers will let you sleep peacefully during calving and will have you smiling when you keep their daughters. Don’t forget to look at the Maintenance energy ePD (Me) with high feed cost it is always nice to have a herd sire that will help keep the money in your pocket and out of his feed bunk.

Blockana 807 is the breeds first triple Crown winner, grand Champion female at Louisville, Ft.. Worth and Denver. She has produced several daughters that will carry on her legacy in the Red angus breed. In my opinion, this is her best son! Big hip, soft made, high volume and capacity with good muscle. The females from this bull should be phenomenal. Study his pattern and take a look sale day, this may be the next great female producing bull!
The Canadian Sensation Six Mile Sakic and Blockana 807 provide the genetic foun-dation for this bull to be a top producer. a full sister just raised the high selling female at the Iowa Beef expo Red angus Sale. Big milk and total maternal numbers lay the foundation for top producing daughters.

Ravishing gr Canyon 192 touts a pedigree that is a refresh-ing blast from the past. He sired by one of the most influen-tial sires in breed history, grand Canyon. grand Canyon has nearly 4,000 registered progeny on record. His rock solid popularity is due to the balanced, problem-free progeny, and the tremendous daughters he leaves. His daughters are deep, dark colored, have great udders, and always wean the heaviest calves. Ravishing gr Canyon 192 also has a very special mother. He is out of the Rambo R726 cow that was bred by Mary von Forell. She is also the mother of the 2002 National Champion female. R726 was a dark red cow with unbelievable depth and muscle dimension. We are very excited to again, offer a set of Red Angus and Sim-Red Angus bulls from our good friends at Mann Ranch. Ranch Manag-er, Jarod McCaffree and Herd Consultant, Larry Garten have assembled an excellent herd of Red Angus and Sim-Red Angus Females that impress us more and more every time we visit the ranch. Their herd is comprised of moderate framed, big middled, thick ended cattle that are Phenotypically correct and able to thrive on the Flinthills of south central Kansas. The original base of the herd was purchased from Pelton Red Angus and consisted of several good Sim-Red Angus females. To add to their bull battery, Mann Ranch has purchased two very exciting bulls from Solution Genetics, SLGN Wide Load and SLGN Wide Open. Both bulls offer proven pedi-grees of our top cow families and have done a great job of complimenting their cow herd. At weaning time the bulls were brought to Solution Genetics and have been developed with our bulls on the same ration and same vet care. Take advantage of the opportunity to add some hybrid vigor to your program with this good set of Red Angus and Sim-Red Angus bulls!

Lot 83-99 come to us from Rhodes Red angus. Darryl Rhodes was raised on a farming and commercial cow-calf and stocker operation in eastern Colorado. after Darryl went into retirement he decided to get back into the cattle business. They now have a ranch 50 miles northeast of Wichita between Peabody and Florence on Highway 50. The Rhodes operation has invested in several top donors from Solution genetics that are cur-rently being flushed. Look for the exciting progeny from
these females on future Cattlemen’s Bull Sales.
Impressive was one of the most talked about numbered bulls last year and this set of bulls show why. Low birth and high growth.
