Akkerman&
Van der Horstcore samplers
Soil core sampling
22
Working principles: Akkerman core sampler / Van der Horst sampler• Stainless steel sample tube is fixed to a core sampler and
hammered into a bore hole with dropping weight or hammer
Soil core sampling
23
Benefits Akkerman core sampler• Large high impact hammer• Ball valve system for best sample retrieval• Strong hydraulic extruder• Liners available for tubes with core catchers
Benefits Van der Horst core sampler• The slimmest system; only 70 mm OD• Can be used in narrow casings• Uses standard large volume stainless tubes• Works with drop hammer or hand hammer• Liners available for tubes with core catchers
Soil core sampling
24
Applications:• Geotechnical soil research• Civil engineering• Drilling companies• Harbours
Remarks• Akkerman set needs to operate with hammering weight
and winch• Van der Horst can be operate into casing tubes of 75 mm• Samples are suitable for geotechnical and environmental
research
Soil core sampling
25
AquaLock sampler
Soil core sampling
26
Working principle: AquaLock• A piston is blocked by water below in the sample tube• Sampler is brought down.• Water pressure is removed and sampler filled.• Water pressure is used to expel the sample
Soil core sampling
27
Benefits AquaLock• Takes beautiful samples to large depths (50 m)• Can be used with Sonic drill rigs• Available in 50 and 70 mm diameters• Can take depth specific samples• Sample lengths up to 4 m• Can work with additional core catcher
Soil core sampling
28
Applications:• Environmental research• Geotechnical research• Civil engineering• Drilling companies• Harbours (sediment)• Archaeological research

Core sampling of soil with volatiles
Soil core sampling
30
Eijkelkamp supplies two products• In-situ soil corers 225 ml (images left)• On-site soil corer 16 ml (images right)
Soil core sampling
31
In-situ soil coring kit for chemical soil research (04.16)• Good for in-situ sampling at shallow depths• Ideal for cooling (48 hrs) or freezing (2 weeks)) method• Sample tube 40 mm is pushed and hammered in the soil• Not fit for stony soil• Coring tube sub-sampled in the lab prior to extraction
Soil core sampling
32
Benefits• Completely prevents loss of volatiles during sampling and
storage– Verified sample conservation quality within Promote
European Environmental verification project • No use of chemicals or sample treatment in the field• Tubes and blocks can be reused after cleaning
Soil core sampling
33
On-site “no-loss” soil coring kitfor soil with volatiles (04.10)Applications:• For cooling or freezing storage method• Also for methanol method• According to USA EPA METHOD 5035A,
various ISO standards and NEN5743
Soil core sampling
34
Basic working principle• Sample is taken above ground from auger or corer• By sideways removal the coring ring is scraped off to a
remaining soil volume of 16 ml (25-30 gr)• Sample can be field stored in methanol or capped and
cooled
Soil core sampling
35
Sample transportMethanol method:• Sample stored and shipped in
special small leak proof glass jars
Cooling method: • Diffusion proof aluminium lined seals and
stainless coring ring assure no loss or sorption of volatiles
• In lab sample is uncapped and transferred into the glass jar for extraction
• Another (disturbed or undisturbed) sample is used for dry weight determination

Sample scraped to 16 ml size
Seal, aluminium lined
Cap with pre-mounted seal
36
Use for cooling or freezing storage method1. Auger or gouge is subsampled2. Coring ring pushed out 3. Excess soil is scraped off. Coring ring then holds 16 ml ~25
gr. of soil4. Rims of ring are cleaned to be capped with diffusion and
leak proof caps5. Sticker is put on PE storage bag cooling

37
Use with methanol method1. Auger or gouge is subsampled2. Coring ring pushed out. 3. Remaining excess soil is pushed out with plunger4. Coring ring is placed back and soil is pushed in methanol
filled jar (entire ring also fits in jar)5. Device is field decontaminated with flame

38
Benefits• Suits also stony soil• Little waste in laboratory• Suits both methods• Aluminium lined absolutely
diffusion and leak proof seals• Close fit glass jars with teflon lined
seals.• Reusable and durable coring rings
which may alternate between lab and user (or disposable with the caps)
Soil core sampling
39
Sample rings
Soil core sampling
40
Working principles of sample ring kits• Sample ring will be filled with soil with help of an open
or closed ring holder
Soil core sampling
41
Benefits• Minimal disturbance (“undisturbed”)• Rings have a very accurate volume• High quality samples for physical tests• Three available diameters (different dimensions)• Can be hammered; applicable in all soils• Sample ring protected by closed ring holder• Kit allows sampling at surface and at depth• Low maintenance
Soil core sampling
42
Applications:• Soil science• Soil physical analyses• Agricultural research
Remarks• Rings and holders are made of stainless steel• Rings can be ordered with special numbers• Lost of sandy samples below groundwater table
