colony divided and
settled?
New Jersey Divides
Soon after New Jersey became a colony, problems arose over boundaries.
A boundary is a line that divides one area of land from another.
Some people argued over where land began and ended.
Others argued over larger boundaries including the boundary between New York and New Jersey.

How did the problems begin?The Duke of York split the land
between Lord John Berkley and George Carteret. (new land owners)
Berkley sold his share to Quakers in 1674
1676- Carteret and the Quakers decided to split up and divide the colony.

Jersey (own government)
Carteret- East Jersey (own government)
The boundary between the two was poorly drawn. Because of this colonists argued over the boundary.

It caused New Jersey to be split into two parts.
West Jersey1676- Quakers settled along the
Delaware River in what is known today as Salem.
Capital= BurlingtonBuilt small villages that
centered on family, farming, and their religion.

East JerseyPuritans moved here for religious

in town, and huge amounts outside of town (plantations)
New Jersey Unites1702- Queen Anne of England united
East Jersey and West JerseyEast & West became a royal colony
of New Jersey, and queen chose who governs there.
Capitals= Perth Amboy AND Burlington
Governor and assembly people would take turns meeting in both capitals.

Why did people come to New Jersey?
People came to New Jersey for land and for religious freedom. Some were forced to come as enslaved people.
