Understanding Social mediaThe term Social media refers to web-based and mobile technologies that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts.Social media is the collective online communication channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Social media are internet based new media tools that allow people to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and multimedia materials in virtual communities and networks that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.

Social media interventionThe ultimate beneficiaries of any technological intervention should be the victims and survivours of human trafficking.Successful implementation of anti-trafficking technologies requires cooperation among players across government, nongovernmental, and private sectors, sharing information and communicating in a coordinated manner.Social media developers should recognize that their services and networks are being exploited by traffickers and take steps to innovate and develop anti-trafficking initiatives through their technologies and policies.Social media interventions should account for the range of human rights potentially impacted by the use of advanced technologies.Continuous involvement is necessary to ensure that tools are user-centric and refined over time to most effectively respond to shifts in technology and trafficking.
