ON PROGRAMMING
CA: Programming is a lot about logic and math.
ST: You learn the key concepts about information systems and how
the surrounding ecosystem works, the important cornerstones
and empower yourself to build applications by learning how to
code.
BMY: Programming is about solving problems, through a methodical
way of thinking.
ON HAVING NO PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE
CA: Most of the stuff we do here has to do with basic logic or
application of theory. We start from ground zero and therefore, JC
students will not be disadvantaged. Many of us from the JC route
came to SIS without any IT background and have done very well.
ON THE SIS COMMUNITY
EL: I like the family spirit in SIS.
CA: There is a strong community in SIS. The students, faculty and
staff are very close to one another and are always willing to help
each other.
ON OUR PROFESSORS & INSTRUCTORS
EL: SIS has lots of dedicated faculty members who will go the extra
mile to help you in your studies.
GT: Our professors and instructors are friendly and approachable.
ST: Beyond the projects, the ability to tap on the knowledge and
energy of the professors have allowed me to think deeper, push
further and strive to become more prepared to take on life’s
challenges beyond my time here as a student.
ON THEIR FUTURE CAREERS
EL: This programme empowers you with the fl exibility to choose any
industry that you want. Every industry needs technology and you
will be spoilt for choice!
CA: I can get to choose to join a variety of companies across different
industries. I am contemplating joining a consultancy fi rm as a
technology analyst, offering businesses different technology
solutions that will help their organisations grow.
GT: The rigorous training provided by the school helps to prepare
me for my working life and the multiple opportunities to work
with experts in the industry have provided me great insights
and exposure.
ST: I would like to work in the space of FinTech as I am highly
interested in the developments happening in this space. It
involves a mixture of fi nance and technology which happen to be
my areas of interest.
ON THEIR PROJECTS
GT: Project work is the most enjoyable element in SIS. The process of
thinking of new ideas, prototyping and completing the project with
your group members is fun and enjoyable. The entire process
where you see your ideas evolve from a simple brainstorming
session into a fully functional working solution that is capable
of helping people in their daily lives gives me the greatest
satisfaction.
ST: I really enjoy the project component of our SIS modules. These
projects often give us the opportunity to challenge ourselves, to
stretch beyond classroom learning, to fi nd out more about
industry practices and trends, and to apply them.
ON THEIR TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE AT SIS
EL: SIS will equip you with the basic skills you will need to turn your
dreams into reality.
CA: The skill sets I gained in SIS have far exceeded my expectations.
ST: The SMU and SIS experience has been nothing short of
amazing. The mix of the SMU pedagogy and the rigour of the
SIS curriculum is something unique that develops you to be
technologically sound while being business savvy. Coupled with
the soft skills that come with the SMU pedagogy, we have learnt
how to be well-rounded individuals with strong technical skills.

The project management, collaboration and communication skills I have
learnt during my time at SMU SIS has been invaluable. The most important
skill, I learnt at SMU SIS was learning-to-learn effectively and effi ciently,
which has been critical in my fi eld of mobile app development, where the

I’m with the Cybersecurity team in EY, performing application and network vulnerability

While still an undergraduate in 2013, Lee Xiang Rui with two SMU
students founded Nectary Studio. It is an idea factory that aims to
design fun solutions that provide an intuitive experience for clients.
“Guess The Word SG” is a game application to help Singaporeans to
appreciate their roots and understand our unique culture.
In August 2015, Lee Xiang Rui and three other
SMU graduates launched the Web platform
“OneThreeOneFour” which is a Chinese phrase
meaning “eternity”. The
platform links couples in
Singapore with photographers
based abroad for wedding
photography. It was
developed to streamline the
planning process for couples
who want to organise their
own overseas shoot.
Originally US is co-founded by Tay Wei Kiat and it has created more
than 30 apps for hospitality groups, property firms and government
agencies since starting in 2015.
One of its most successful app is SG BusLeh, which informs
commuters the time taken for their bus to arrive and show the
approximate physical location of the bus. Launched in May 2015,
the free app is the highest rated on the Android store! “We are quite
proud of this app (SG BusLeh) because it is practical and relevant to
the local market.”
In November 2015, Wei Kiat launched
his new startup, Hoi.US, a business
intelligence and mobile point-of-sale
company. HoiPOS aims to modernise the
point-of-sale (POS) industry that is
traditionally filled with solutions developed
more than 10 years ago, by providing
real-time, easy to understand yet
crucial intelligence for F&B business
owners to make better decision.
Create an app that helps couples or bus commuters or
just for fun! Having a career as a technopreneur has
always been my lifelong dream. I have always wanted
to combine innovations in technology with innovations
in business. The start-up culture in SIS is
extremely encouraging.
My job is to transform a client’s ideas into a working,
