Dear Friends,
I’m sure you feel the need to go deeper, to let your faith grow and mature the way God wants it to. To move it from the fringes to the center of your life so it has a deeper meaning and is more relevant to your life.
Learning your faith and geng involved in the parish has never been easier. As Fall begins this month, St. Lawrence is offering a series of mini courses for adults looking for more. deepening your grasp of our Faith, for learning to pray beer, to worship experiences, and understanding the Bible.
We’ll be offering Alpha starng in October – it’s for anyone who wants find meaning in life and explore how faith in Jesus can bring that to you. We do it over a friendly meal each week, making new friends and talking over issues that maer.
We’ve got Scripture courses to crack open the mysteries of the Bible we don’t yet understand. No knowledge of anything required to start. We help you and it’s not hard. Just bring with you and open heart.
We’ve got powerful programs for families to gather with others and enjoy their faith with their kids and for the kids to get to know Jesus, and have fun. They learn how to pass it on…
For teens we have open gym nights and Lifeteen. Young adults gather together now to find ways to serve, do something meaningful, and to connect life and faith together.
Kids love our AllStars during the first part of the Mass at 9:30 and 11:00. That’s when the Bible comes alive for them in a way they can get it.
There is something for every age level and every person, no maer if you are beginner or an experienced veteran in formaon courses.
Got a prayer life that is dead or on life support? You’re not the only one. So we’ve got a great lile course that teaches you how to really pray well and get something of it! Don’t we all need to take that? It’s called “Oremus”.
You know you should sign up for an hour of Adoraon too… Hundreds of people throughout the week rotate through that adoraon chapel, praying for loved ones and themselves. Got a kid fallen away from the faith? A family crisis? A loved one with a bad diagnosis or chronic illness? You’ve got something you need. Adoraon moves mountains. Really.
When 100-150 people come to the Church for Seasons of Praise and worship the Blessed Sacrament together in prayer and song, something powerful called Divine Grace gets unleashed on the world, and miracles start happening: conversions, healings, reconciliaons – you name it.
All this great stuff is on our website and explained in the St. Lawrence Faith Center booklet of Fall Offerings. Pick one up in the back of the Church. Do yourself and those who depend on you a favor: deepen your faith this Fall at the St. Lawrence Faith Center. God bless, Fr. Richard Gill

POPE FRANCIS ASKS, DO YOU DISCERN GOD’S WILL BEFORE MAKING A DECISION?
By Elise Harris
Pope Francis dedicated his homily at Mass to the theme of obeying God’s will, saying a Chrisan should have a heart like Mary, who was open and obedient to all that God asked of her. “Do I pray that the Lord gives me the desire to do his will, or do I look for compromises because I’m afraid of God’s will?” The Roman Ponff encourages us to pray in order “to know God’s will for me and my life, concerning a decision that I must take; the way in which we handle things … there are so many things.” First, he said, there is the need to pray to know God’s will, then to pray for the desire to do it, and finally when we have these things, we pray “for the third me, to follow it. To carry out that will, which is not my own, it is his will. And all this is not easy.”

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY SEPTEMBER 3, 2017
DISCERNMENT IN A NUTSHELL By Joseph A. Tetlow, SJ From Making Choices in Christ
Human beings are moved by a dense complex of moves, both in the things we do from day to day and in our big decisions. What drives a young woman to become a doctor or a young man to be an engineer? Many things contribute: success, altruism, interest. Or what drives a woman who has smoked for years to quit or an obese man to get thin? Again, many things contribute: fear of death, desire for health, concern of family. But they all interact in a kind of movement that eventually drives the person to act. Master Ignaus learned to think about those dense complexes of moves—images, ideas, aracons, revulsions—as “spirits.”
We can all name many spirits. There is school spirit, in which everyone cheers together for the football team. There is fear, which can depress an enre city, and exultaon, which can cause a whole naon to rise up. But spirits are not only secular. A thrill of devoon fills St. Peter’s Square when a saint is canonized. A spirit of prayer drives people to make retreats. Chrisans under atheisc desposms are moved to remain faithful.
Consolaon and Desolaon Master Ignaus noted that these dense complexes of moves and energies take on two configuraons, which he idenfied with consolaon and desolaon. He discovered that both consolaon and desolaon can move you toward God or pull you away from God. Then he noted that somemes consolaon comes from a good spirit and somemes from a bad spirit, and he noted the same thing about desolaon. Ignaan spirituality applies this to interpreng major decisions and daily experience as well. The movement of spirits, obviously, involves a set of complex variables:
consolaon and desolaon, good and evil spirits, movements to and away from God. . .
How Spirits Work Some basic paerns are easy to grasp. For instance, as you would ancipate, the good spirit usually brings love, joy, peace, and the like; the evil spirit characteriscally brings confusion, doubt, disgust, and the like. Another paern: when you are leading a seriously sinful life, a good spirit will visit you with desolaon to turn you around; an evil spirit will keep you content so that you will keep sinning. Another clear paern is the opposite of this: when you are seriously serving God, the spirits change roles. The evil spirit clouds your day with desolaon to lead you away from God, while the good spirit fills your day with trust and love of God. And a final, easily grasped paern: a spirit that works in light and openness is good, while a spirit cloaked in secrecy and decepon is evil.
What to Do about Feelings Some basic pracces are also easy to figure out. When you have made a good decision to serve God beer and aer awhile go into desolaon, you should not change the decision; it’s hardly a good spirit moving you. When you are feeling down, you would do well to pray a lile more and increase the help you give to others. When, without warning or any preparatory acvity, you are consoled with the love of God above all things, you can trust that it is a good spirit (parcularly if it comes with tears). But when you are thinking or praying and grow consoled or disconsolate—well, test those movements. They could come from either spirit, as we have seen.
There is a good deal more to Ignaan discernment, and it gets no simpler. It is not, however, a merely human discipline. “Now instead of the spirit of the world, we have received the Spirit that comes from God, to teach us to understand the gis that he has given us” (1 Corinthians 2:12). Serious disciples cherish this gi and put it to good use.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY SEPTEMBER 3, 2017
INTENTIONAL DISCIPLE SPOTLIGHT
Michele and Nicole LaRusso
Faith has always been a huge part of our lives.
For as long as we can remember, we have been aending mass at St. Lawrence O’Toole. Even aer Confirmaon, we connued to aend mass and became apart of the Teen Club. When it was me to go to college, we made sure there was a church nearby so that we could connue our spiritual journey. We might have been exhausted walking a mile to St. Mary’s in the lile town of Oneonta, but it was all worth it each me we entered the house of our Lord.
Aer returning home from college, our faith connued to grow. In 2015, we got the opportunity to become more involved when Nicole aended Cornerstone and Michele became a Lector. This allowed us to meet more people in our community and finally put names to the friendly faces we saw each week.
We sll wanted to do more and last summer we heard about the Alpha program through Father Gill. The best part was that it was the first series being held for the Young Adult ministry beginning at St. Lawrence. Finally we had the chance to share our faith with others our age, what could be beer than this?
Aer doing Alpha for the first me, we chose to take part in it again for a chance to meet even more people our age that share our same values and beliefs. Since then, the Young Adult ministry has connued to grow and held many series. This is the place where we have made friends for life through the help of God. We are truly grateful for this community and all that this church has blessed upon us. God is good all the me!
SCHOOL OF LOVE AND GRATITUDE RELATIONSHIP TO LIVED EXPERIENCE
From the Leaders’ Guide to Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan
Reflecon Watching her husband reading to their young children one evening, her heart swelled in gratude for the tender and loving man that God had made for her. Catching her look of love, he paused and looked deeply into her eyes, returning her smile. He savored the moment of peace and the warmth of his family surrounding him, thinking that he certainly had so much to be grateful for. Later, aer the children were tucked in bed, she embraced him and told him how grateful she was to have him. He told her, “God has given us so much, I’ve been feeling lately like we certainly have a lot to offer another child . . .” Discussion Queson What good thing did your spouse do recently that you could have thanked him or her for, but didn’t? Write it down on the index card. Share it privately with your spouse. Make a list: What do you sll love about your spouse?

CATHOLIC GUIDANCE FOR END-OF-LIFE DECISION MAKING End-of-life decisions, for ourselves and for loved ones, are among the most challenging we will ever face. There is a movement in our naon to legalize assisted suicide, but that is a false answer and is a dangerous experiment. Our Church offers comfort and praccal guidance to live and die with dignity. Visit www.CatholicEndofLife.org to watch the video and read the New York State Bishops’ document “Now and at the Hour of Our Death.” Learn why the Church favors compassionate medical care, and why the Church opposes physician-assisted suicide.
