Skip’s Spot
Happy New Year and welcome to the new and improved Group newsletter. The branding
fairies have been hard at work so hopefully you will like the new look.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the quality of the articles and my thanks go out to all those
who took the time to submit their stories. We are truly grateful.
You will quickly notice that this edition is full of great ‘people news’ and that’s very pleasing
from my perspective. We have a raft of internal promotions which shows our real commitment
to advancing careers. Congratulations and well done to you all. If you work hard and stay
loyal, you can clearly do very well in this organisation and that will always be the case.
We have recently won a number of prestigious awards. A British Construction Industry Award
for JCE, a National Home Improvement Council Award for SEHBAC, and Site Manager of the
Year for Jackson’s Rob Smart, are particular highlights.
You can also read how we remain committed to investment to help grow the business. New
plant can be seen throughout the newsletter and, more importantly, out there in the field. We
are very busy and will only get busier so we must keep investing.
Finally, a huge “thank you” for the hard work that went into making 2014 a great
year for One Group. I look forward to working with you to help make 2015 an
even better one!

QEII Bridge Project Complete
Jackson has successfully completed the project to replace the six original Maurer Multi Element Expansion
joints on the QEII Bridge at Dartford.
This project has been a triumph for Jackson, as the bridge carries 160,000
vehicles per day and is one of the busiest sections of road in the world. In order to
keep the traffic flowing, the team had to devise a method for doing the work whilst
keeping the bridge open.
The method
The method was a bespoke designed and built temporary expansion joint, which
could be installed during a single night closure over the existing joint. The
temporary joint, which formed a slight
ramp over the existing joint, was
designed to allow live traffic to flow on
the bridge, whilst work to remove the
old joint was carried out from the
underside of the bridge.
Once the old joint had been removed,
the new joint was installed, again
during a single night closure. This
process involved removing the
temporary joint, craning in the new, and
then replacing the temporary joint in order to re-open the bridge to live traffic the
next morning. Each joint is 19.2m long and spans all four lanes of traffic.
In figures
Over the past 18 months the team has worked their way across the bridge, north
to south, removing and replacing all six joints. During this time, they’ve worked
280 night shifts, and removed just under 100m3 of concrete, all of which had to be placed in 20kg buckets and removed from the
bridge – a total of 11,400 buckets of concrete. The ramps have been installed in four separate locations across the bridge, and
whilst in situ, 30.2 million vehicles have driven over them. The combined movement of all the joints on the bridge is 33.7mm per °
C, with a total range of movement from the hottest day to the coldest of just over 3 metres.

Goodbye to Jack
At the helm of SEH French for over 25
years, Jack Davey decided to retire at
the end of May 2014. It has been a
pleasure to have Jack leading the team and he shall be much
missed by all at SEH French.
Jack plans to spend more time with his family and a lot more
time reducing his handicap on the golf course!
Playing an integral role in the success of SEH French, Jack
has worked in the building and construction industry for his
entire career. He began his working life as a bricklayer, be-
fore progressing through the
ranks to becoming Director of
SEH French in 1989.
Jack has been instrumental in
developing and progressing
the organisation over the years,
ensuring that we are ever-
changing and never staying
still. He has taken the team
from a small local building firm
to a medium sized multi million
pound thriving business.
Tim Hoelzer
Reflecting the growing status of SEH
Commercial operations, we are
pleased to announce that Tim has been appointed a Director
of the company.
Tim, who has been responsible
for our sales and estimating
activities since joining the
company in 2013, has 25 years
of the broadest experience in
the window industry, having
held posts with national and
regional fenestration brands.
Tim will continue to deliver the
personal contact with
established and new
customers, which is the
hallmark of SEH business
policy.

Alex Mirrlees - Contracts Manager
We would also like to welcome Alex to the team. Alex has
been working for over 30 years within the fenestration
industry. With a wealth of knowledge in fenestration Alex has
used his skills across the world, including a number of
prestigious projects
situated in India.
Alex’s keen eye for detail
is significant in keeping
budgets, materials and
workforce under
constant control,
ensuring projects are
completed in a timely
manner. Alex is adept at
working within the UK or
abroad and is a valued
member of SEH
Commercial’s team.
Paul’s Promotion
We’re delighted to announce that 2
years after he joined the business,
Paul Rodwell has been appointed
Operations Director of SEH French. Paul will also be
supported by the introduction of two new Contracts
Managers.
Paul joined the team from Haymills (now known as Vinci)
where he worked his way up from Trainee Carpenter to
Operations
Manager.
Paul’s new
role will still
include his
technical
input with
projects at
pre contract
stage but
also
overseeing
the delivery
of the construction process.
We have also promoted two further team members to
support Paul in his new role with effect from 1 May 2014.
Julian Eddy, who has been one of our Site Managers for over
12 years, and Simon Hubert, moving over from the Surveying
team, will both take on the role of Contract Manager.
They will both be overseeing and managing the construction
process, working with the SEH teams and partners to ensure
the smooth and efficient delivery of the construction projects.
Quest for World
Domination
Having seen our showroom network increase from 5 sites to 11 over the last 2 years, and with it a direct correlation in improved turnover, we felt the timing was perfect to continue this trend. This decision was made a whole lot easier when a prestigious site at Poplar Nurseries, Marks Tey, near Colchester became available. Having been a privately owned concern since 1941, it’s fair to say that it’s reasonably well known in terms of locale! This really is positioned in a prime location, situated just off the A12 and with over 27,000 vehicles passing by daily, it was not a tough call to make, it really does tick all of the most important boxes. Construction is now at an advanced stage with completion of all 6 glazed extensions scheduled for mid December. With the whole area being sympathetically landscaped, this will be our most impressive conservatory site thus far. Will we stop there? We’ve already got our sights set on a new venture at Abingdon, Oxfordshire—so watch this space!

Luke Findlay
Congratulations to Luke Findlay who has been made a Director of Emmitt Plant. Despite his youthful looks Luke has been with Emmitt for a number of years and looks after the front end of the business including sales, marketing and cus-tomer care. He has also just become a father for the first time so the ‘wide awake’ look won’t last for much longer!

Grant Usher has also joined the hire team at Em-mitt. He has come over from Newmarket Plant where he spent the past 8 years working in the same environment. We look forward to welcoming him aboard. Roy Glansfield, Matthew Smith & Steven Whitnell are new engineers to help our service team. Our very own Richard Neill has joined us! Richard is our new lorry driver based at Nedging Tye. He will be driving one of our beaver tail lorries. Please say hello & welcome our guys… you never know, they may pop up on a site near you!
Steeple Bumpstead
Flood Scheme
Completed
Jackson Civil Engineering recently completed
work on a £4.5m flood alleviation scheme in
Steeple Bumpstead, Essex, which was officially
opened by Brooks
Newmark MP and
Charles Beardall of
the Environment
Agency, at an
official ceremony
held in July.
Following some
significant flood
events, work began in February 2013 to re-profile
sections of each channel, and included the
replacement of six river crossings, including
footbridges, road bridges and a ford.
During the heavy rainfall and flooding in February
2014 the
improved flood
defences, which
were only
partially
completed, were
put to the test,
and successfully
protected homes
in the village
from flooding.
TREVOR DIXON
Born in Ipswich and have lived in and around
Ipswich all my life. Happily married to Lindsey with
two children, Chloe (11) and Oliver (9).
A Spurs fan, longing for the day when they stick with
a manager long enough to win something! I’m a part
time golfer, who has convinced his daughter to take up golf so I have an
excuse to play more.
Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Easygoing & approachable.
Q. What was your first job?
A. Picking strawberries for 50p a bucket (they were large buckets and
small strawberries!) After leaving school I joined a small firm of
accountants as an office junior. They were somewhat old style and
rather set in their ways (no computer), but the training gave me a
great insight into many different businesses throughout East Anglia.
Q. What frustrates you?
A. Very little – life’s not a dress rehearsal so focus on the positives and
find solutions to the negatives.
Q. What’s your happiest childhood memory?
A. Only conceding 3 goals in 45 minutes in a school football match. We
went on to lose 9-1!
Q. How do you spend your leisure time?
A. It depends, it could be golf with my daughter, football with my son or a
family bike ride (weather dependant).
Q. What’s your favourite television programme?
A. My wife would say anything sport related.
Q. If you had to choose another job, what would you do?
A. A chef. If I had more patience I would probably be able to cook more
edible food but my biggest challenge would be convincing my wife &
children to act as tasters.
Q. What is your favourite food?
A. I’ll eat “almost anything”. I love my food but if pressed Sunday roast
takes some beating.
Q. What food do you hate?
A. Tuna fish & peanut butter – the smell!
Q. What is your biggest weakness?
A. I’m impatient.
Q. What is the most satisfying thing you have ever done?
A. At home, “hopefully” bringing up my children to be down to earth and
well mannered.
At work, progressing through the ranks with Jacksons over the last 15
years.
Q. If you could go anywhere, where would you go on holiday?
A. A tour including America & Australia. Both have immense appeal, so
much to see and do.
Q. What is your ultimate ambition?
A. Like all parents, to see my children happy and successful. I hope they
will be able to look back on their years living at home with great
memories of fun times.

SEH Ipswich’s Newest
Acquisition
Our clients tell us that there is no excuse for dirty roads. We agree so we have bought ourselves a road sweeper! Our newly secured contract, on the outskirts of Norwich, is adjacent to an existing school so we have taken the plunge and purchased a seven and half tonne Johnston sweeper. The sweeper boasts many upgrades including: on-board jet washer, gully-sucker and rear facing cameras. Although second hand, the unit is in exceptional condition for its age and Emmitt Plant have been busy installing new brushes and giving it the “once over” to ensure it is in peak condition. We can’t wait to see it in the SEH livery and look forward to its arrival on site.
SEHBAC—Raising Standards
SEHBAC operate almost 50 teams of fitters installing up to 15 conservatory contracts and 100 window contracts a week. A new incentive to monitor a number of key performance indicators of our installation teams was set up earlier this year. There are 13 KPIs including:
Positive customer feedback, vehicle cleanliness, recalls/remedials required, uniforms worn, installations completed on time and run-outs due to fitters
A marked improvement in standards and a drop in remedial calls has resulted. The winners are as follows: May — Scott Byhurst and Chris Cove (pictured right with Peter Wheeler)
June — Steve Stone and Mark Norris (pictured left with Martin Sewell) July — Lee Munden and Simon Fitzpatrick
August — Karl Fitzgerald and James Wood September — Paul Riches and John Riches October — Tony Parsloe November - John Riches and Paul Riches December - Gary Downs and Gavin Hounsone
British Construction
Industry Award for
Jackson
Jackson Civil
Engineering's
Godmanchester
project has picked up
a British Construction
Industry 'Outstanding
Contribution Award'.
Commissioned by the
Environment Agency,
the Godmanchester Flood Risk Management Scheme was a
£9.2m project to protect over 500 residential and commercial
properties in the town from flooding. The 1.5km defences
were constructed along the river bank, which flows through
the centre of the town. The project was particularly
challenging as the majority of the construction work was
carried out in frequently used public areas and private
residential gardens.
The outstanding contribution award is given to the team
who, in the view of the judging panel, has gone beyond the
norm to ensure that their project was delivered in an
exemplary manner, has provided extraordinary satisfaction
to their client, or
performed in a way that
sets a standard to follow
in the future. The winner
is the person or team that
truly embodies the spirit
and intention of the BCI
Awards, helping the
industry to improve and
deliver best value and
satisfaction to clients.

took over as Contracts Director on

CECA Site Manager of the
Year 2014
Congratulations to Rob Smart, Site Agent at Jackson, who has been presented with the Site Manager of the Year Award by CECA.for the way he managed the Fazeley sec-tion of the Lower Tame Flood Risk Management Scheme. Having entered the competition on the suggestion of Adam Tuke and Steve Palmer, he was contacted by CECA to at-tend the AGM. He attended and was very pleasantly sur-prised when he was announced as the overall winner! The main reason cited for his success was the way he and his team had handled the challenges of carrying out very intricate and technical work in such restricted environments, so close to public spaces and residential properties. A big part of being successful with this was the effort which was put into public liaison and engagement. _______________________________________________ A Bit About the Project Itself The project consisted of flood alleviation works in key areas of Tamworth. The Fazeley section involved constructing 1.2km of flood defences, protecting 216 properties. The construction work consisted primarily of earthworks and brick clad in-situ reinforced concrete structures, combined with bentonite and sheet piled below ground cut offs. The success of the Fazeley team can be attributed to a strong team spirit and work ethic. Rob’s relaxed but focused leadership style promoted and encouraged openness within the team, allowing all members to perform to their fullest. The highest standard of health, safety and environmental performance were met, ratified by excellent scores in exter-nal client audits. Working in close proximity to the public, with many sections of the scheme being carried out through the gardens and communal spaces of local residents, required a focused ef-fort to engage with the local community. Rob and his team put a lot of work into minimising disruption from construction activities, and fostering positive relationships. A number of site open evenings were held, with local resi-dents invited to visit the site for guided tours. These were extremely well received, with very good attendance and feedback. Despite the numerous challenges faced by Rob and his team, they have delivered a scheme to be proud of. Rob helped his team overcome restricted working areas, tech-nical challenges, environmental constraints and unexpected design changes with outstanding success; and all done with a smile (most of the time!). As Site Manager, Rob’s technical ability, motivation and approach-able personality created a team ambitious to achieve success. Rob’s team tackled any chal-lenge thrown their way, and were willing to go that “extra mile”. These attributes have been re-flected in a highly successful project. Well done, Rob!!
£2.4 million Plant
Investment
Emmitt have spent £2.4 million pounds this year on their plant replacement programme. This is to include plant from big brands such as Hitachi, Takeuchi & Kubota. This year Emmitt decided to split the pack when it came to purchas-ing the excavators and mini diggers to give us full flexibility and a better service, unlike other years where we have gone with one manufacturer. We are excited to have purchased more machines from Willow-brook Plant based in Corby, with the supply of 6 more Hyundai R140-9A excavators and a large number of Takeuchi mini diggers, including the new TB216’s. We have also purchased a large num-ber of Kubota mini diggers from our dealers HOS Plant, to include the new KX080-4’s and the New U27-4’s.

SEHBAC Wins NHIC “Best
Glazing Project” Award
Congratulations to SEHBAC on win-
ning the Glass and Glazing Federation
Award for “Best Home Improvement
Glazing Project” at the National Home
Improvement Council (NHIC) Awards in London.
This is a highly competitive category with “Grand Design”
type projects being entered nationally. To have come out on
top is a real accolade for the whole business.
The judges chose SEHBAC as winners because the project
showed great attention to detail from design through to deliv-
ery. Technically
it was an excel-
lent production.
The project also
displayed the
best attributes of
glass and glaz-
ing in terms of
energy efficiency
and natural light.
It was a well-
deserved winner
of the award.
Well done to
everyone who
played a part in
securing this
award!

SEHBAC were also finalists at the “G—Awards” in two cate-
gories: “Installer of the Year” and “Conservatory Installer of
the Year”.
Again, these are national, industry-wide awards. Unfortunate-
ly we didn’t win on this occasion but just to be nominated as
finalists was an achievement in itself.
Major Contract for East
Kent College
SEH Commercial has undertaken a major property refenestration project for East Kent College’s Broadstairs Campus which has required the installation of more than 350 window frames and over 1500 pieces of glass and panels. This major window replacement project is integral to the £14.5 million renovation programme that is creating exciting new facilities for college students. The main reason for the refenestration project was to upgrade the thermal efficiency of the buildings. SEH Commercial has installed the aluminium powder coated window units in the existing Horizon and Enterprise buildings which are prime student teaching buildings. Further substantial installations have included the stairways, connecting corridors and entrance halls. Another building is a refurbishment project running alongside the refenestration programme which will become a new commercial nursery which will serve as one of the few active nursery training centres in the UK. SEH Commercial has installed the windows for this new face-lift education centre. An attractive Grade II listed building on the same site, which has had a remarkable history as a convalescent home, military hospital and technical college, is being renovated to provide the Yarrow Training Hotel. SEH Commercial has designed a secondary glazing system proposal for the renovated windows in this listed building which has been used successfully in buildings at the University of London.

Summer Hotels in Leeds
and Cardiff
Yes, we will be spending this summer in hotels in Leeds and
Cardiff – but we won’t be relaxing for a moment! SEH
Commercial has been appointed by Kew Green Hotels to
carry out refenestration projects at two of their prestige hotels
which are undergoing major investment programmes.
SEH Commercial is responsible for the replacement of more
than 200 window and door units at the former Cardiff
International hotel which is undergoing a complete external
and internal refurbishment and refit.
In Leeds, the very busy Holiday Inn hotel will continue to
welcome guests whilst the renovation programme is running
which requires SEH
Commercial to work
closely with the hotel
management to
schedule the handover
of rooms and the early
release of the
renovated
accommodation for
occupation.

“Immaculate”
Refenestration at
Edgware Apartments
Lodge Close, Edgware in north-west London is a very
attractive location for 63 privately-owned residential
apartments in three blocks facing onto a parkland setting with
ample grass areas and mature trees.
The Directors of the Owners Association determined that the
thermal efficiency as well as the aesthetics of the properties
required the replacement of the windows and tasked their
retained property management company to select a
fenestration company to handle the project. SEH Commercial
was selected to deliver the project and the result has been a
very popular choice and described by the property manager
as
“immaculate”.
A total of 447
new windows
have been
installed to
replace the
original
aluminium
sliding units.
The choice of
the white UPVC
casement style
windows
certainly delivers a clean, fresh more modern appearance for
the properties as well as greatly improved thermal efficiency
and long lasting low maintenance.
New Lorry for Emmitt
Emmitt have invested in a new lorry for
our Norfolk branch to keep up with hire
demands. The new 7.5 tonne lorry will
be used to run smaller items of plant to and from site in a
more efficient manner leaving the bigger trucks to continue
with the heavier loads.
Most of you will recognise our driver, Justin Tacey, who
originally drove for our Nedging Tye depot.
Hadleigh Show
In May, Emmitt exhibited at the 175th annual Hadleigh Agricultural Show. It was a fun filled day for Emmitt to meet and greet the local community. We had a stand, showing off some of our new plant which included the New Takeuchi TB290 excavator, a Terex dumper and a New 7mtr Manitou Telehandler but the real star of the show was the impressive micro digger… aka ‘The Spoon’. The weather was glorious and the crowds were plentiful…
