Kris’ Kolumn
Welcome to 2016!!
New and old Members are back from the Aspen trip and racing success at Mammoth. What’s next?
Board nominations (Brian), the Dinner-Dance (Lance), more
racing (Craig), and a little wine tasting (Lance)!
Shep & Tara led us to Aspen, and such a wonderful time skiing and partying we had! Next year? Read his article on pages 4-6.
Brian captured the good times at Aspen with a story and photo expose’ (pages 20-23).
Let this smooth talker talk you into taking a position on the Board next year.
Craig salutes our many new members, a few of whom have helped propel our Team Long Beach well into 2nd place and knocking on the door of 1st place (pages 10-12).
Roberto might still have room at the Club Condo(s), if you act fast! (pages 13-18).
Lance has us enjoying the (fermented) fruits of our hard labor(s), when we aren’t at the ski hills (page 19). Can you donate an item for the Dinner-Dance raffle or silent-auction? A few members each year enjoy a decadent harbor cruise on members’ boats.
And, if you’ve had enough snow, just have to get away, but don’t have the time…. Sarah has just the thing for you (pages 7-9).
Cheers!
Kris
PS Many thanks to Sarah, Craig, and Shep for reviewing, while Cindy is in France.

Aspen 2016 Week Ski Trip - March Trip Report
By Bob & Tara Shepard
We are happy to report that everyone on the Aspen Week Ski trip had a great time
during the week. All of the early group including Long Beach and Space Park Ski Club and members from the Edelweiss ski club were treated to a direct flight into Aspen
Airport – YAY ! It snowed the first day, so a few of the members took the day off, to
enjoy the town of Aspen. The following day it snowed very little and the rest of the week it was crystal clear weather, sunshine every day, with snow as deep as you
would want it. In Snowmass, our club Nastar race had to be cancelled, because the course had too much snow; however, the lunch on the hill went as planned. The
Nastar race was rescheduled on Friday, still in Snowmass, with a wonderful race course set up. The Long Beach Ski Club’s Mark Malan came in 1st with a Gold medal,
and Brain Maloney came in second with a Silver medal, and both Kris Flaig and Bob
Shepard received Bronze medals. The Gant Condos were great accommodations where the staff shuttled all of us anywhere we needed to go all over Aspen; it was
great. We all had a fun time for the Après Ski in the J-Bar in the old Jerome Hotel, it was very well attended by all of the ski clubs.
Phil Weisgerber, Lisa & Brian Maloney Après Gang in Jerome J-Bar
The Long Beach & Space Park Ski Club Madd Hatter Party Members decided to surprise the Century City & Edelweiss Ski club members with our crazy Madd Hats at
the Cocktail party before the annual group Banquet dinner on Friday night. It was a
very happy event with Long Beach Ski Club’s Marietta Malan was the winner the Best Female Madd Hat with her fabulous hand-made Rose paper bonnet, and Space Park
Ski club member Quincy Ho won best Male hat with his Pine Tree Branch Crown, which he found after falling into the woods on Ajax mountain that same day.

A large group of all of the clubs enjoyed an evening visit to the Local Aspen Historical
Society Museum in one of the oldest Victorian Wheeler house. Everyone had a great
time seeing some of the history about Aspen, and the people who made it so
wonderful. After 10 ski trips to Aspen we finally got to ski Buttermilk; and what a great
skiing mountain & wonderful Cliff restaurant.
The Space Park Ski Club has, for the last 3 years, hosted the Annual Ski Week Photo
party. So, this year it would be nice for someone in the Long Beach Ski Club to offer their home for hosting this year’s Aspen Photo party. Please contact Shep at 310-
567-5239. Anyone who took videos or photos during the Aspen week, please Email them without any compress in their size to Mike Bilinski at:

The club is still researching where the 2017 week ski trip will take place. Some have suggested a trip to Bormio Italy, and a few have asked about Big Sky Montana or
going to Snowbird & Alta. After we get some of the cost on places, we will email everyone a survey to see where the 2017 Ski Week should take place.
Hope you all will be at the March 2nd LBSC General Meeting. We will be skiing in

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl
February was devoted to skiing events such as: LBSC week trip to Aspen and a
weekend at Mammoth.
Aspen was a great trip that included great snow and many social activities. It was very
cold and most started skiing around 10 am, when it was around 15 degrees. One
evening, Brian and his wife, Lisa, hosted a delicious meal for all the LBSC members. Lisa made homemade spaghetti and meat ball/sausage with an outstanding tomato
sauce. Barbara Nelson and I went shopping for the appetizers. Barbara selected what she wanted and I went around the market to find the ingredients. The week was
successful because of LBSC members, Tara and Shep, who were part of the team of organizers for this event. Four clubs joined together for this trip.
For March, we will be having our annual St. Patrick’s Day Party at the home of Brian
and Lisa Maloney. It’s apparent that we have a bit of Irish here. The party will be Friday, March 18th. The Club will provide the main dish, which includes Costco’s
famous corned beef, boiled red potatoes, and steamed cabbage. See the flyer for details. On Saturday Evening, April 16th, we will be tasting wine at the Urban Table,
located in Belmont Shore at 5000 East 2nd Street. This wine tasting will be unique. I have made arrangements with the owner, Carol, and her wine distributor rep, Kiera,
who will select 4 or 5 wines and Carol will prepare a special menu to coincide with the
wine selected. Recently, Dave Lopez and I attended a Thursday night wine tasting, which is a regular weekly event at the Urban Table. They also have an extensive
appetizer and dinner menu. Look for an upcoming flyer for details.
For May, we will have our annual Dinner-Dance at Malarkey’s, the same location as
last year. We will have a sit down dinner with a beautiful view of the Alamitos Bay.
That night we will have raffles and introduce the past and new LBSC boards. Watch for a flyer for details. As you can see, this club has many activities planned, as well as
skiing trips. This year we have grown to over 80 members.
Hope to see many of the members at these upcoming events.

Brian having a Blast in Aspen
On Sunday, January 31st, an early am departure was hard, but
the early flight got to Aspen, the next flight landed in Twin Falls and had to be bussed in from there.
Leg Muscle Madness Monday
We started with six skiers at 9:00
am at Aspen’s Ajax Mountain. We had two feet of snow and one more falling from the sky.
Visibility was poor. Early in the morning, two plus feet of powder was unavoidable. Most of the blue runs were
powder fields. Conditions worsened as the day went along.
SKI BREEZE MARCH 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 10
On Tuesday morning, we were off to Snowmass
with a quick forty five
minute bus ride. Still slightly stormy on
Tuesday, we had 50% powder and 50%
corduroy. Long Beach Ski Club Members skied
together most of the
day. Some of Century Club members joined us.
Dinner for eight was a nightly event. Some
were at ritzy restaurants like Zocirito and Jerome’s, and some were
cooked in the condo. Temperatures on the
slope, Tuesday, were in the teens.
Dropping to near zero on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, I was with Lance, Ron and Dave
at the Highlands. It was cold with temperatures
between two and six degrees. It was good to hit the warming hut after about an hour and a half.
On Thursday, some went to Buttermilk. Buttermilk is a
beginner/intermediate mountain.
It is the home of snow bunnies. I ended up at Snowmass where
there is more diverse skiing. I learned that if you lose your skis in
powder, you should use your poles to poke the powder until you hit
something, preferably your skis!
SKI BREEZE MARCH 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 10
The Gant gave us 5-Star Service. From heated
towels at the jacuzzi to pick-up and drop-off
shuttles.
Dave & Lisa Felker, and
Robert & Tara
Shepherd did a wonderful job setting up and directing this trip.
Shep recommended that we take a picture of our lift ticket, so, if we lost it, we could go to
the ticket shop and have it reprinted. That
was good advice, as I ended up losing mine! Replacements were $5.
Friday was race day at Snowmass.
We enjoyed blue skies and warmer temps.
The Nastar course was very casual with no long lines. We had Jodi Hein as a first-time racer (and new member). She enjoyed the course. Mark
Malan pulled in the fastest time (in the 26’s) to win the gold trailed by Brian Maloney (in the lower 27’s)
for the silver. Kris Flaig won a bronze (Shep, too!! ).
After the race we had lunch at the Stew Pot.
Incredible, freshly-made stews and soups. Lance Liebl joined us at the Stew Pot, but
didn’t race.
That afternoon, Kris, Jodi, and I went for
mid-mountain rides, which were groomers.
Starting above the tree line at 12000 feet, we had an open hill with no lift lines.
SKI BREEZE MARCH 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 10
Friday night was the
Mad Hatter Party followed by dinner and
the presentation of awards. Everyone
seemed to have a good
time.
Our tickets were good
for five days. I was out of days and Kris
was heading back to CA with Lance.
So, I picked up the
extra day from his pass. Mark Malan
and I met to ski Ajax on Saturday.
There were no lines for the gondolas
and plenty of room for speed cruising. Speed cruising is bombing intermediate runs at higher speeds. We threw
a double diamond bump run in, too. One last Nastar race for fun. It made for a fun day.
At the airport, someone in the group went to the
bathroom. Somehow, her driver’s license slipped into the toilet. Before she had a chance to reach in and grab
it, the auto flush took her license down the drain. She missed her flight, because Homeland Security wouldn’t
let her through.
