The streets of Benidorm will be a sea of green over the weekend; thousands of people visit the resort of Benidorm to celebrate Ireland’s national day - St Patrick´s Day.The celebrations will start on the Friday 14th when many visitors arrive, once the bags are dropped off at the hotels then the party weekend will start. The annual event for Paddy’s Day is getting more and more popular and is almost on the same scale as the November Fiestas.St Patrick´s Day celebrations have been celebrated in Benidorm for many years becoming one of the most popular places to visit for the event outside of the UK and Ireland. Hello readers, what a great week it has been simply “shamazing” it was as soon as March hit us the sun got warmer and the shorts, t-shirts and people wearing very little were on the streets. A taste of things to come of course and now this week is probably one of the most exciting weeks of the year. Why you might ask? Well for Sports it the one of the biggest horse racing events from 11th - 14th Cheltenham festival followed by the final show down of the Six Nations with everything to play for we will see the fight for the title on Saturday 15th back to back action with all six teams with a point to prove facing the prospect of being champions!!With thousands of new arrivals on this week for Fiestas and St Patricks Weekend, the word Weekend is very important because Paddy’s Day has now become so big all over the World that it’s not just on the 17th that its celebrated, it is stretched out over the weekend. So be prepared to get started on Friday 14th and be in for the long haul of fun, right through until the end of play on Monday 17th so for most it will be early hours of the 18th…To plan for the weekend we have put together a centre page pull out feature so you can see what’s on and where. CAR tRANSFER ANd IMPoRtAtIoNIn our weekly article we are looking at all aspects of life in Spain and the rules, regulations and best ways of integrating into their system.This week we will look at vehicles. Due to the fact that in the UK it is only necessary to write the name of the purchaser into the bottom of the log book and post it off to the DVLA in Swansea- It is a common misperception for foreigners to Spain to believe that when they buy a car in Spain it will be sufficient to just have a hand written “bill of sale” on the back of a napkin. Unfortunately, like many bureaucratic processes in this country- it is a lot more complicated than that.When you buy a vehicle in Spain there is a standart transfer tax payable to the traffic office to cover their administration fees but there is also a purchase tax which is alculated on the age, make, model, engine size and Co2 emissions of the vehicle. The amount of tax payable per vehicle are all listed in the equivalent of the “glasses guide” for Spain, so the only reason the price would alter is due to the fees charged by each Gestoria. you can carry out the transfer yourself but it can be very complicated and time consuming as you have to pay in various different offices and get various documents stamped and then queue at the traffic office in Alicante, which when your average Gestoria charges less than 50€ for this service- it is usually not worth the petrol, parking, two days of your time queing and employing the services of a translator. We do advise in all cases, wether transfering the ownership yourself in person or using a Gestoria that when buying a road vehicle of any description it is wise to have it checked for outstanding taxes or fines that may be owed as the debts are inherited along with the vehicle. you must also make sure that when you purchase the vehicle you obtain a copy of the identification of the vendor as withoiut their NIE number and other details, the vehicle cannot be transfered.When considering importing a car, you should note that a car with foreign plates should be imported into Spain within 6 months of the date of you becoming a resident of Spain, if you are caught beyond that time the fine can be in the region of 200€. Remember that your headlights will need to be reset for driving on "the otehr side of the road". The other factor which is important is that you must be registered on the Town Hall "Padrón" (electoral roll) this will provide proof of where your vehicle is "habitually resident in Spain"- in some cases your title deeds will be sufficient. We can discuss the "Padrón" its uses and requirements this coming week.

nOT in TOp gEaRSpanish drivers are the second worst in Europe according to research from the French motoring foundation Vinci Autoroutes and the Europe-wide market research firm IPSO which surveyed 7,000 people. 16% of those questioned said that they feel that the Spaniards were the worst behind the wheel, but that figure could not hold a candle on the winners, Italy, where a staggering 50% said their drivers were most dangerous on the continent. Swedish drivers were seen as the most responsible drivers, with 47% naming them as safest, follows by the Germans, who got 26% and then the British with 13%. Spanish drivers are more likely to use their horns in stressful situations – 67% of motorists in Spain admitted to doing so, compared to the European average of 47%.

Denia will be celebrating the Fallas from the 17th to the 19th March 2014. This traditional fiesta marks St Joesphs Day, the 19th of March, which is also Fathers Day in Spain. The actual programme starts a lot earlier on the 23rd February with various events taking place. On the 15th March it is the 'planta' when the ninots are placed or planted in the streets. The 'ninots' are intricate papermachie statues which have been made by local associates throughout the year. Once they have been 'planted' they are called 'fallas'. These 'fallas' are then burned in an event known as the 'crema' on the evening of the 19th March.

The outer edge forms a scaly ring. There may be one patch or several. However, the appearance of the rash is not always typical and your Doctor may need to take skin scrapings for examination to confirm diagnosis. The rash may cause only mild discomfort but for some people may be very irritating and itchy.Ringworm is an infectious disease and may
be passed directly from person to person by direct skin contact. Sharing towels etc with an infected person can also spread the infection.Contact with an infected animal can also cause ringworm. If you suspect that your pet may be infected, see a Vet before you start itching!!Fungus also survives in soil and can live on surfaces such as doors that have been touched by an infected person.Ringworm can be easily treated with antifungal creams. Sometimes a steroid cream may also be needed to control itching and inflammation .Other forms of ringworm such as that of the scalp normally require treatment with antifungal tablets as cream alone may not clear the infection.Always check with a Doctor before using antifungal preparations as some groups of people such as those with existing illnesses or taking certain medications that interact with antifungals, should not use them.

My family and I have been regulars there for 12 years and we are made to feel at home in the sun every visit. Tony, Kate, Diane, Tommy, Maria and Ross accept you as one of the family. Expats also make you welcome. Prices are very good and quality of food and drink are excellent. Great Sports coverage. We book our Hotel on the basis of nearness to the Pub.Avoid being bored by the shallowness of other Pub/Restaurants. Drop in and you won’t regret it.

“Friendly place”Reviewed 8 January 2014We went to Benidorm over Christmas and went to the Drop Inn most days for breakfast. The prices are very reasonable and the food is great. The kitchen is clean and the staff are very friendly and will do anything to make you feel at home. Ross always made us laugh and couldn’t do enough for us. All the staff worked hard and we didn’t have to wait long for food even though they were always busy.

“Really good spare-ribs!”Reviewed 12 December 2013 Even of it is a bit cold in December, you can still eat outside during the day. I visited the place twice during this week, and have tried both the Argentinian beef they serve; it was really good, but the spare-ribs were better! The price was 13.75 Euros and it was really worth it`s price. I recommend this place for meat-lovers, but they have godd sandwiches and bocadillos too. Try the place next time you are in Albir!

I go there most weeks for coffee early in the morning when they’re busy and the service is still fab .They also serve the best make of coffee in the world (in my opinion) Italian brand “illy”Food also good they do a beautiful Caesar salad. The coffee, croissant and spanish toasted baguettes are the best in town. All the staff are really friendly and professional, remembering what you like to eat and drink and enjoy listening to your broken Spanish with patience!. Wifi is available and they don’t mind you sitting there for a couple of hours online.

“Excellent Indian Meal by far the best in Albir”Reviewed 17 January 2014Visited this Indian Restaurant with friends twice in the last few days 12th Jan 2014 being our first visit and again 3 days later this is by far the best Indian in Albir. First of all it looks the business inside and the staff are friendly and are very helpful. Our food was first class, well presented and plenty of it. The menu is extensive and if you want something different just ask they are willing to accommodate your request if they can. We all had different meals and each one looked and tasted different which is a bonus these days. Just do not take my word for it try it you will pleasantly be surprised. Yes Indian meals always seem to be more expensive these days but is also on par with the other restaurants in Albir.
“Tasty, Value and Adequate, no-rush to go back”We had a set €25 eat-as-much buffet and we got good value with cava, beer and wine. Everything was very tasty but apart from the onion bhajis nothing wow’d me! Sauces, rice, naan were very nice but they skimp on meat and vegetables a bit. The beef dish was a little tough (so I suspect a cheaper cut was used) and food temperature varied - I like my food hot. The service was attentive and the staff very pleasant. Just not sure the buffet suited us, i think we prefer to be served and an al-a-carte menu but the buffet was plentiful but limited choices. The two desserts on offer were not to my liking, we would have preferred plain ice cream. Red house wine was mediocre - we have had better from the supermarket. Overall we enjoyed the food but have no great desire to return for the buffet or probably the restaurant again. For an extra €5 we would recommend the El Boulevard nearer the Albir beach.

BEniDORm caR ThiEF TaKES caR WiTh chilD inSiDESaturday morning the owners of the Citroen C5 left their car unattended, with the keys in the ignition and engine running while they looked at another car in the showroom on Avenida Comunidad Valenciana, just a couple of minutes later it
was stolen with their child under 7 years of age asleep still inside.The thief was apparently unaware of the child being inside the vehicle, and just saw an opportunity to steal the vehicle, with the keys inside and the engine running. The owners were alerted immediately as the hijacker being in a rush spun the wheels causing loud screeching and a smell of burning rubber as the car sped away from the scene fleeing toward Altea.A local police patrol who were in the area, also heard the screech as the vehicle departed and incredibly stopped the car just 200 metres from where it was taken.The person arrested was a 35 year old male, believed to be of Serbian nationality, he remains in custody pending confirmation of his identity, police have identified two different records of whom he claims to be, one of which has criminal past.
SCOTTISH TOURIST DIES IN SPAINA Hibs ladies football coach has died after falling from the balcony of her fifth-floor hotel room in BenidormMorgan Lynn, 25, was on holiday in Benidorm with two female friends, and had been out with them for the evening, when the tragedy occurred. Local police and the Foreign Office said Ms Lynn who lives in Edinburgh, fell from her 5th floor balcony at around 3am after she and her companions returned to the Hotel Gala
Placidia where they were staying. Police investigations are continuing into exactly what led to the tragedy. Ms Lynn, originally from Hawick, worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an internal control officer. Ms Lynn grew up in the Borders and went to Hawick High School before studying at Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret University, where she graduated in 2009 with an HND in Business Management. She was involved with the Queen Margaret ladies football team throughout her three years at the university. She worked as a market researcher for Ipsos Mori for two years before joining RBS. Last year, she played for Women’s Division Two football team Musselburgh Windsor, but was not playing this season due to injury. She had also recently taken up horse riding again and qualified to teach rock climbing. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time.”

St PAtRICKS wEEKENdSt. Paddy’s day in Benidorm is always a fantastic occasion , every year the streets of Benidorm are full of life, the pubs and bars are decorated with Irish, leprechaun and shamrock flags!!!, for the whole weekend you might forget your in Benidorm especially after one to many drinks, just how the Irish like to celebrate! Irish, British, Spanish and more many other nationalities are in the streets celebrating (and drinking) the national day of Ireland. The party this year will last all weekend you can enjoy in the pubs until very late, and dance until sunrise, some pubs even have special prices for beers and cider and you guessed it Guinness!.If you need a costume or some party favours head down to The Original Benidorm Jokeshop, just off Calle Gerona next to the Why Not bar.

For five days the castles, monuments and “mascletaes” become the protagonists of Benidorm, where the smell of gunpowder is interspersed with the smell of flowers and the music of the bands with the sound of masclets. A transformation that occurs as a prelude to spring, and on March 19th, everything ends and everything begins; with the last of the ashes people start to dream of Fallas again for the following year. The festival of San José takes place in Benidorm from the 15th to the19th of March. Like the city of Valencia, Benidorm honours San José with Las Fallas - a festival of nightly street parties and rowdy fireworks. Three giant papier-mâché statues (ninots) are erected and then ceremoniously burned to the ground on the final evening. The trio of statues, known as Central Falla, Rincon Falla and Els
Tolls Falla, are constructed by - and placed in - the different districts of Benidorm. The areas try to outdo each other with their huge and elaborate designs and often use the statues to poke fun at local celebrities and politicians. The Valencian fiesta is celebrated in Benidorm with the erection of the Fallas and there is plenty to enjoy with fireworks and concerts. The ninots are burnt on the 19th and is the best part of the festival.

SUNdAy 16tHAlong with parties through the weekend Sunday draws to an end with a parade from 7.00pm after a “mass” church service will be held in the San Jaime Church
MoNdAy 17tHStarting at 10.30am in the Rincon de Loix, a fantastic band will play music and dance around the first ninot and then go on to parade the streets, towards the other two statues where they will do the same.
tUESdAy 18tHTuesday is the Flower offering, another traditional part of the festival starting at 6.00pm there is a parade along the Mediterraneo.
wEdNESdAy 19tHThe final day of the festival is what everyone has been waiting for, starting at 6.00pm there is a huge parade with floats along the Avd Mediterraneo it will finish in the Plaza Triangular and at 11.00pm they start by burning of the children’s statues, from here they will burn the big statues in turn. 12.00pm Rincon, 12.00pm, Plaza Triangular, 1.00pm Old Town.

La nuciaLA NUCIA DOG HOMINGDoes a dog have doubts, so why should we. you have probably heard of the saying ‘That if you think you can’t or you think you can, then you are probably right’ or ‘if you aim for nothing, then you will probably be very successful’ I was thinking about this the other day and began to wonder if our dog friends have the same kind of thoughts. Do they enter the pound and think ‘oh well I might as well give up’ or do they enter and just get on with life. Some of them come through the doors of Benidorm Dog Pound and start to shake with fear, perhaps the same as a condemned man walking through the prison halls for the first time. Food is from hotel left overs and biscuits to give them bulk. A walk, well it’s a distant dream as they may get one a week if they are lucky. yet these dogs don’t give up, they look to you for love and attention. That short walk and cuddle is longed for, hoped for and enjoyed for every second you can spare them as they strain on their leads to find a short burst of freedom through the blue gates. La Nucia, as confirmed by the National Congress of the Spanish Association of Sports Newspapers (AEPD), will take over from Santander, where Monday's awards were presented for the efforts of 2013. The dates on which the event will take place are yet to be decided, but the idea is that the National Sports Gala and Congress AEPD are to be held in the last week of February or the first week of March.

On Friday 7th.March 55 members of the U3A Marina Baixa enjoyed their first outing of 2014.Leaving Albir by luxury coach at 9am the first stop of the day was for morning coffee at the Viva Espania, Oliva, giving everyone the opportunity to say meet their fellow trippers. Our destination was Gandia to visit The Ducal Palace, also known as the Palace of the Borgia family. The tour began at 11.00am with an English speaking guide who had a wealth of knowledge to share with us about the history of the Palace. The oldest part of the Palace dates from the 15th.Century and was renovated in 2010 to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the birthplace of Francisco Borja. The Golden Gallery and the Crown Hall were spectacular and the members of the University of the Third Age absorbed this with enthusiasm. After the tour the group had time to explore Gandia. Some were happy to sit in the square and enjoy a drink in the sunshine, others took advantage of the shopping and restaurants Gandia has to offer. Rob Parker the travel co-ordinator finds interesting places to visit for the travel group increasing our knowledge of the architecture, culture and traditions of Spain. Our next trip will be the 4th.April to Novelda, Castle of La Mola, Sanctuary of Santa Maria Magdalena, and the Bodega Salvador Poveda in Monovar.On the 2nd.May we will visit Caravaca de La Cruz for the Festival of the wine horses and if enough interest is shown by the U3A members a possible 2 nights stay on the Mar Menor. An interesting event on the 13th.June is River Rafting. Pono, has been on the cards for some time. But now, there are finally some real details: from march 15th, you'll be able to pre-order one on Kickstarter for £240. The big, bright triangular digital music player provides "studio master-quality digital music at the highest audio fidelity possible" according to Ponomusic, which gives listeners the ability to "experience music the way the artists intended." It remains to be seen exactly how accurate that is—and whether there's consumer demand for it—but it's kind of neat that the Canadian rocker is pushing the idea so hard.

For the 2nd Week running the Fantasy League produced another low scoring Week with the average score being only 13 points.There was 3 F.A.Cup Ties & 5 Premier League games contributing to this weeks Fantasy which produced 25 goals,4 clean sheets,27 yellow cards and 2 red ones.Spurs Kaboul (who I thought was little harsh to be sent off) and Stoke’s Penalty Taker Walters both received their marching orders. Danielle’s Team Charlie’s Chico’s made it to the top of the Fantasy League for the 2nd time this Season when they took over from Abby’s Brigade.The lead is only 2 points. Laik’s Lonies are in 3rd place just behind the Leaders then comes Rob’s Team Scunny F.C. This Season the Fantasy League is turning out to be one of the most intriguing yet, as only 60 points separate the top Ten Teams so anybody can still win it.At the other end of the Table Heidi’s Pot Luckers are 22 points adrift of Ben’s Boys. Rocky’s Mini Spurs managed to close the gap on the runaway Leaders Abby Brigade at the top our Junior League while Gian’s Team Monsuno Marauders slipped into 3rd place and could make a big challenge on the top 2 in the next few weeks.At the other end Ben’s Boys are already braced for the big drop at the end of the Season. Charlie’s Chico’s are still top of our Mark Carter Ladies League but coming up fast on the rails is the in form Laik’s Loonies who this Week bagged the highest score in this Section with 44 points all her 5 Defenders kept clean sheets
which gave her 28 points. The Loonies have qualified for a stake on our Cellar Bar Cert Tip selected by Ian Charman who is due a winner. Down in the doldrums Heidi’s Pot Luckers have drifted further away from Kim & Rachel’s Team El.Nui Baddies the deficit now being 64 points. biGGest ever winter pArALympics The biggest ever Winter Paralympics has started in Sochi. More than 500 athletes from 45 countries will compete for 72 gold medals in five sports over 10 days. It is the largest number of countries to take part in the event since it was first held in 1976. Teenager Millie Knight carried the British flag during the opening ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Fisht Stadium on Friday 7th March, events started on Saturday. Britain have sent a team of 15 athletes and have already made history, Kelly Gallagher and guide Charlotte Evans won Paralympic GB's first ever gold at the Winter Games with victory in the visually impaired super-G in Sochi. They both manage to communicate on their way down the slopes via bluetooth headsets as they travel at speeds of up to 100km/h. Since linking up together, they have won silver and bronze medals in the 2011 and 2013 World Championships as well as World Cup honours. Britain has had athletes competing in every Winter Paralympics since the first event in 1976 in Sweden. Gallagher and Evans and Etherington and Powell will be in action again on Tuesday, along with Turney and fellow sit-skier Mick Brennan when they compete in the super combined event.
caRl FROch V gEORgE gROVES:60,000 tickets sold as Groves demands neutral referee for Wembey fight. George Groves will refuse to fight Carl Froch unless the British Boxing Board of Control sanction neutral officials for their super-middleweight world title rematch at Wembley Stadium. The 25-year-old Londoner has claimed the May 31 rematch, mandated by the IBF, will not go ahead unless the BBBofC allow a non-British crew of match officials. Groves labelled the ninth-round stoppage by referee Howard Foster that handed Froch a controversial victory in November a "stonewall" robbery.
