SIMPLE, COMPOUND, AND COMPLEX SENTENCES

SIMPLE SENTENCE = Subject + Predicate

EX: Tasha loves to play volleyball.

COMPOUND SENTENCE = Subject + Predicate, FANBOYS Subject + Predicate

FANBOYS are also known as coordinating conjunctions.

To help see if you have a compound sentence, put a period where the comma is

and take away the FANBOYS. You should have 2 complete sentences)

EX: Tasha loves to play volleyball, but she is crazy about lacrosse, too.

Tasha loves to play volleyball. She is crazy about lacrosse, too.

COMPLEX SENTENCE = Opener, Subject + Predicate

You can take away the opener and you will have a complete sentence, but if you

take away the subject and predicate you WILL NOT have a complete sentence.

The opener begins with an AAAWWUBBIS word. These words are also known as

subordinating conjunctions.

EX: Because school is important, Tasha plays only one sport at a time.

Tasha plays only one sport at a time. This is a sentence.

Because school is important is not a sentence.
