- CHIPPING
SIGHT CONSERVATION A RECENT STUDY FOUND THAT
APPROXIMATELY 60% OF PERSONNEL WHO SUFFERED EYE INJURIES WERE NOT WEARING EYE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT
WHEN ASKED WHY, PERSONNEL INDICATED THAT FACE PROTECTION WAS NOT NORMALLY USED OR PRACTICED IN THEIR TYPE OF WORK, OR IT WAS NOT REQUIRED FOR THE TYPE OF WORK PERFORMED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT
MARINE CORPS SIGHT CONSERVATION PROGRAM:
ELIMINATE EYE INJURIES PREVENT ACCIDENTS FROM FAULTY
VISION INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AND ELIMINATE
WASTE CAUSED BY DEFECTIVE VISION MAINTAINED HIGH MORALE CONTROL OF CONTACT LENSES IN AREAS
THAT CONTAIN TOXIC VAPORS, DUST, LIQUIDS OR WELDING FUMES.
RESPONSIBILITIES THE SAFETY OFFICE SHALL:
- DETERMINE EYE HAZARDOUS AREAS, OCCUPATIONS, AND PROCESSES WHICH REQUIRE EYE PROTECTION
-ASSISTANCE SHALL BE PROVIDED BY
INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE IN THE ASSESSMENT OF RADIATION AND OTHER HAZARDS
AREAS DEFINED AS EYE HAZARDOUS
BUFFING SHOPS CLEANING SHOPS CRATING SHOPS DEBURING SHOPS AND ENCLOSURES GRINDING SHOPS METAL MANUFACTURING PNEUMATIC TEST SHOPS WELDING, BURNING SHOPS WOODWORKING SHOPS PUMP AND CARBURETOR TEST SHOPS AREAS AROUND POWER WIRE BRUSHING AREAS

BASIC FIRST AID
NO ATTEMPT SHOULD BE MADE TO REMOVE A PARTICLE LODGED IN THE EYEBALL
DO NOT WASH AN EYE THAT HAS BEEN CUT IN ANY WAY
BANDAGE BOTH EYES CHEMICAL BURNS SHALL BE FLUSHED
IMMEDIATELY WITH TEPID POTABLE WATER FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES.

BASIC ELEMENTS SURVEY OF WORKPLACES TO IDENTIFY NOISE
HAZARDS AND PERSONNEL AT RISK WHEN FEASIBLE WORKPLACES SHALL BE MODIFIED
TO REDUCE NOISE LEVEL TO ACCEPTABLE LEVELS ENGINEERING, ADMINISTRATIVE, CONTROLS
MEASURES SHALL BE EMPLOYED WHERE POSSIBLE. PPE SHALL BE USED AS A LAST RESORT.
PERIODIC HEARING TEST SHALL BE CONDUCTED TO MONITOR THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROGRAM
NOISE MEASUREMENTS
IN ORDER TO EFFECTIVELY CONTROL NOISE, IT IS NECESSARY THAT THE NOISE BE MEASURED AND EVALUATED PROPERLY BY THE INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE DEPT

ALL PERSONNEL ROUTINELY EXPOSED TO HAZARDOUS NOISE OR ASSIGNED AN OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY THAT INVOLVES ROUTINE EXPOSURE TO HAZARDOUS NOISE
AUDIOGRAMS:
ALL PERSONNEL EXPOSED TO NOISE IN EXCESS OF THE NPEL SHALL RECEIVE PERIODIC MONITORING HEARING TESTS
HEARING TESTS SHALL BE CONDUCTED AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR AND ANNUALLY THEREAFTER
MONITORING AUDIOGRAM
MONITORING AUDIOGRAM
SHALL BE COMPARED TO THE REFERENCE AUDIOGRAM TO DETERMINE IF A SIGNIFICANT THRESHOLD SHIFT HAS OCCURRED.
15 HOUR
PERSONNEL WHO DEMONSTRATE A SIGNIFICANT THRESHOLD SHIFT (STS) ON THEIR ANNUAL MONITORING AUDIOGRAM SHALL BE RETESTED AFTER THEY HAVE REMAINED FREE FROM ALL NOISE EXPOSURE EXCEEDING 80 db FOR 15 HOURS
40 HOUR
OCCASIONALLY, AN STS IS STILL EVIDENT FOLLOWING THE 15 HOUR NOISE FREE PERIOD. IF THIS OCCURS, THEN THE PERSONNEL MUST BE KEPT FREE OF ALL NOISE EXPOSURE FOR A PERIOD OF 40 HOURS BEFORE BEING TESTED AGAIN.
MILITARY PERSONNEL SHALL RECEIVE A HEARING TEST UPON DISCHARGE FROM THE MARINE CORPS.
CIVILIAN PERSONNEL WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED AN STS, SHALL RECEIVE A HEARING TEST UPON TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT.
ALL PERSONNEL REMOVED FROM THE HCP DUE TO NO LONGER WORKING IN NOISE HAZARDOUS AREA, SHALL RECEIVE A AUDIOGRAM TO DOCUMENT THEIR AUDITORY STATUS AT THAT TIME.
TERMINATION HEARING TEST
RECORD KEEPING THE RESULTS OF EACH
AUDIOGRAMS SHALL BE KEPT IN PERSONAL MEDICAL RECORDS.
PERSONAL HEARING DEVICES
HEARING PROTECTIVE DEVICES SHALL BE WORN BY ALL PERSONNEL WHERE THERE IS NOISE LEVELS GREATER THAN 84 db(A).
A COMBINATION OF INSERT TYPE AND CIRCUMURAL MUFFS (DOUBLE PROTECTION) SHALL BE WORN WHERE LEVELS EXCEED 104 db(A).
ALL PERSONNEL EXPOSED TO GUN FIRE, ARTILLERY OR MISSILE FIRING IN A TRAINING EXCERSISES SHALL USE HEARING PROTECTIVE DEVICES.
ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL OF EXPOSURE TIME MAY BE NECESSARY
PERSONNEL WHO EXHIBIT A PROGRESSIVE SERIES OF PERMANENT THRESHOLD SHIFTS MUST BE CONSIDERED AS HIGH RISK FOR FUTURE HEARING DETERIORATION. THEY MUST BE GIVEN SPECIAL CONSIDRATION UNDER THIS PROGRAM
EXCLUSION FROM FUTURE NOISE EXPOSURE
ALL PERSONNEL IN THE HEARING CONSERVATION PROGRAM SHALL BE NOTIFIED AND RECEIVE TRAINING IN:
- THE ELEMENTS AND RATIONAL FOR A HEARING CONSERVATION PROGRAM
- PROPER WEARING AND MAINTENANCE OF HEARING DEVICES
- COMMAND AND INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBLITIES
- OFF-DUTY PRACTICES
- INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY IN PROTECTING THEIR OWN HEARING
- HOW HEARING LOSS EFFECTS EMPLOYABILITY, RETENTION, JOB PERFORMANCE AND CAREER PROGRESSION
