Pinkney’s dislexia made success in school a chal-lenge. He was awarded a scholarship to the Philadel-phia College of Art upon graduation, a testiment to his perserverance.

Born in Philadelphia in 1939, Pinkney’s family supported his interest in art throughout his childhood, and life.

Pinkney’s wordless The Lion & The Mouse was the 2010 Caldecott Medal Winner.

Pinkney was awarded his second Coretta Scott King award for his illustrations in Goin’ Someplace Special.
