From NCR: WASHINGTON A U.S. military strike on Syria would be an abuse of power that should becondemned and rejected, the global leader of the Jesuit order of Catholic brothers and priests hassaid.

Jesuit Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, who leads the some 17,000 member order that counts among its ranks PopeFrancis, adds his voice to a chorus of Catholic prelates around the world sharply criticizing the attack in aninterview made public Wednesday.

With all respect for the people of the United States, I think that a military intervention like the one beingplanned is itself an abuse of power, states Nicolas in the interview. The US has to stop acting and reactinglike the big boy of the neighborhood of the world. This leads inevitably to abuse, harassment and bullyingof the weaker members of the community.

Nicols, a native Spaniard whose superior general role in the past has been referred to as the

black pope because of its inluence around the world,also says such a military strike would questionthe authenticity of the United States Christian heritage.

Before critiquing the proposed U.S. strike in Syria, Nicolas says he does not usually make comment onpolitical situations, but that in the present case we are dealing with a Humanitarian situation thatexceeds all the limits that would ordinarily keep me silent.source National Catholic Reporter

Someone said something along the lines of Jesus miracles being done and claimed it was bythe power of Beelzebub.I would read Matthew 12:31-32 carefully before making such a claim. Jesus offered a sternwarning. He called it Blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

While Obama squarely puts the blame for the alleged sarin attack on the Assad regime, Putin writes,

These are complicated matters with competing interests. Expect any inal deal to go to the U.N.Security Council to be put into a formal resolution.

And to add to the intrigue, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius says the U.N. report on lastmonths attack will probably be published Monday. And there will certainly be indications that theattack originated with Syrian President Bashar al-Assads regime, he said in a radio interviewThursday.

Looming over the talks is the military strike card that President Barack Obama continues to hold. Heasked Congress this week to put the authorization on hold, but the card isnt going back in the deckjust yet.

This is the way that diplomacy works, said former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who wasAmericas top diplomat in the Clinton administration. You use the threat of the use of force to getsome action in diplomacy, and then diplomacy just to igure out what you do about the threat of theuse of force.

Still, some say it doesnt give the White House a lot of wiggle room.

If diplomacy fails, hes painted himself into a corner, said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina.
