Shared Spaces
woonerf sign
“Shared space is a relatively new concept emerging across Europe. It incorporates a set of principles for the design, management and maintenance of streets and public spaces, which aim to create a better balance of priorities between drivers and pedestrians.
The most recognizable characteristic of shared space is the absence of street clutter, such as conventional traffic signals, barriers, signs and road markings. This encourages motorists to slow down, engage with their surroundings and make eye contact with pedestrians – resulting in a higher quality and more usable street area, with enhanced road safety.”(http://www.rbkc.gov.uk/exhibitionroad/shared.html)
Concept
“In the U.S., shared spaces are being implemented in Seattle, Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, and Santa Monica in the west, and Cambridge, New York City, and other places in the east. Applications have also occurred in the new urbanism communities of New Town at Saint Charles, Missouri, and the South Main development in Buena Vista, Colorado.”(http://www.livablestreets.com/streetswiki/shared-space)
