Broadway’s 2017 Shake It Up
Vacation Bible School begins on
Monday, July 26—and you still have
time to register your sprouts!
So what will your children learn
and experience during our July 24-27
VBS? Shake it Up is all about food—
not so much about cooking it, but
how our food is grown—and how we
can eat fresh and healthy foods that
are grown in God’s good earth!
If you have not done so already,
please send your child’s registration form to the church
office as soon as possible. Children’s Ministry
Coordinator Aimee McBride is busy forming groups and
placing volunteers. If you do not have a form, please
email Aimee at [email protected] or
download the form from last week’s Broadway Weekly e-
news.
All of the favorite parts of our VBS will be back this
year—our Drama Team, our music and dance filled
openings and closings and our Thursday evening Ice
Cream VBS Celebration. Something new this year for
our 3-5 grade kids will be daily trips to participate in the
summer program at Columbia Center for Urban
Agriculture (CCUA). CCUA offers unique programs to
promote urban farming and their children’s summer
program shows children how food is grown, how to care
for a garden—and then what to do with the fresh food
after it is harvested! Our new
Broadway Bus makes these daily field
(pun intended!) trips possible!
VBS Work Day Is July 16
Like all Vacation Bible Schools,
our Shake It Up VBS has lots of prep
work that has to be finished before
July 26! Following our 11:15 a.m.
worship next Sunday, July 16,
Children’s Ministry will serve a simple
lunch for volunteers who can assist
with the cutting, sorting and painting
for VBS crafts and decorations. Aimee will have supplies
organized to get as much completed as possible for 3:00
p.m.! If you would like to help, but can’t stay after
church on July 16, please contact Aimee for a take-home
project!
Hope to see your little future farmer for Shake It Up
VBS July 24-27!

2017 VBS Almost Ready for Pickin’!
Shake It Up VBS Is Food for Faithful Fun!
As you read this column, some of
the Broadway family will be
concluding the General Assembly of
the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) that has met in Indianapolis.
For Disciples this gathering
resembles a large family reunion that
includes lots of worship, inspirational/
educational presentations, and some required
business thrown in for good measure.
Of special interest to me was the resolution that
encouraged congregations to be faithful in their
response to immigrants and refugees. It reminded me
of the rising sanctuary movement in which faith
communities are exploring what it is that the Lord
requires of us in responding to the strangers in our
midst. For Christians this is a deeply moral issue.
On a celebratory note, the Assembly
has elected the nominee for our next
General Minister and President who will
serve a six year term: Rev. Teresa Hord
Owens. Our prayers rise to support her in
this pastoral ministry of episcope –
oversight – for the General Church of the
Disciples. I would be remiss to not mention
and thank our outgoing GMP who has faithfully served
us for twelve years, Sharon Watkins. Well done, good
and faithful servant.
On the home front church camps are in full swing
and Vacation Bible School is a couple of short weeks
away. We have launched into our new church year
with new leadership and commitments and we are
already preparing for our fall launch. How good it is to
be your pastor, Broadway!
ON BROADWAY... ...with Pastor Tim Carson
On July 9, the General Assembly of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) elected Rev. Dr. Terri
Hord Owens as the new General Minister and
President of the church. Rev. Owens’ election
concludes a search process that lasted more than a
year and examined 40 candidates.
Rev. Owens has been a Disciple of Christ since
early adulthood. She is currently serving as the Dean
of Students at the University of Chicago Divinity
School and serves as the Senior Minister of First
Christian Church of Downer’s Grove, IL. She and her
husband, Walter, will soon celebrate their 30th
anniversary, and have one adult son.
As a minister and educator, Rev. Owens has
focused on the theology of reconciliation, cultural
intelligence developing inclusion and multi-cultural
congregations and the mentoring of youth and young
adults. She is a widely sought after preacher, speaker
and workshop
facilitator.
“We saw in Terri
that unique
combination of
pastoral, leadership,
active presence in all
expressions of the
Church and
administrative
experience that the
search committee
believed was most needed,” said Search Committee
Chair Jackie Bunch. “She has experience as a local
pastor, theologian and leader.”
“The committee particularly noted her skills in
discernment, spiritual discipline and proclamation of
the Word, but also as a listener.”
Disciples Make Historic Selection for New GMP
If you are a regular at our
Rocheport Bluegrass worship,
you know Molly Healy. She is
a talented vocalist, fiddle and
cello player, with a love for
bluegrass and contemporary
folk—but really, Molly is simply
a lover of all music!
Molly Healy will share her
considerable talents with us in
a free evening of music on
Saturday, July 22 at 6:00 p.m.
in the Loft. Be ready to hear familiar tunes, some of
Molly's original music and some great fiddle and cello
music.
Following the concert, join us in the Fellowship Hall
for a free ice cream reception hosted by Connections
Ministry.
Molly is a native of
Jefferson City and has
played professionally for
several years. She has
toured with groups such
as Smith Cornmeal and
Ozark Mountain
Daredevils, as well as
many other Missouri-
based bands. She has
released a collection of
original music, Nightbirds.
What better way to spend a late July Saturday
evening than in a climate-controlled venue with the
promise of ice cream—after you’ve been entertained
by a talented musician! Again, the concert and the ice
cream are free—Join us and bring a friend!

An Evening of Beautiful Music with Molly Healy
Broadway is blessed to have a multitude of very
serious gardeners within our congregation! One of the
by-products of our generous supply of home gardeners
is that those gardeners grow more vegetables that they
can use, preserve or share with family—thus the need
for Broadway’s Farmers Market!
The Market started last Sunday with some zucchini
and cucumbers. Based on our previous experience,
there will soon be more zucchini, more cukes and the
introduction of homegrown tomatoes, peppers and
more! If you are a home gardener who is blessed with
an over-abundance of vegetables, just drop them off at
the Market table in Fellowship Hall. No need to price
the vegetables—we ask for donations that will be used
for Festival of Sharing supplies.
If you would like to pick up a few fresh vegetables
next Sunday, just stop by the table in Fellowship Hall
and take a look. Vegetables are not priced, but we
request a donation for outreach. You can take as many
as you need and drop your donation in the mason jar!
The Farmers Market will continue through the
growing season. Stay tuned for news on the Work of
Our hands T
It’s Farmers Market Season at Broadway!
Glad you asked! Maybe you're recovering from an
illness or your child just got an award or you just joined the
church.
♥ CareLink can send you a
card of encouragement as
you recover, also a card to
applaud your child's
accomplishment and a warm
welcome to our church
family.
And what if you're confined to
your home due to a health issue
and you've had a rough month?
♥ CareLink can bring you
flowers from the Sunday
service altar and the volunteer bringing them can
check in with you and cheer you on.
Maybe you just need a reminder of God's healing love
and warmth, something that can make you feel physically
warm and cozy.
♥ Once again, CareLink comes through with a
handmade prayer shawl that has been blessed during
a special moment. And you feel the support of your
whole church family.
You live in a care center and you feel so far from the
days when you had your own home and family. You just
need to feel like you belong!
♥ No problem, CareLink's team of care center visitors
will make sure they drop by just to talk and update you
on what's going on in church. They are great people
who know how to listen.
And what if your ceiling fan stops working on the same
day that you realize you need help organizing your kitchen
and you need to move a piece of heavy furniture.
♥ Nothing is impossible for the CareLink Handy
Helpers. Don't even think twice about calling for
help. That's exactly what they do best and it's
free. They can fix that fan, spruce up the
pantry and still move that furniture and they
do it with a smile.
And if you suffer the loss of a loved one
and don't know where to turn to host and
serve a meal to your loved ones before or
after a service?
♥ The CareLink bereavement meal team
can put together a reception or meal that
makes you and your family feel the love and
support of your church family.
And soon CareLink will be introducing the
newest loving service, Calls of Concern. Volunteers will
make regular telephone calls to those who just need to
stay in touch.
Please don't ever hesitate, let us know if CareLink can
help with any of these services. We can also help in ways
that need a one-time fix and may not even be on our
list. Just call the church office (445-5312) or call Patsy
Dalton, 356-6036, or Linda Poehlmann, 234-1950. We
want to help. And we need to keep busy.
Volunteer to be a CareLink volunteer. You will be
amazed at how rewarding this ministry is for the one who
receives the extra care and for the one who provides
it! This is a great way to get to know others in our church.
Even our fifth grade church school class has joined in
the CareLink ministry. Just last Sunday they made cards
to be used by the CareLink Card Writing team. So follow
their lead and join CareLink now. It's so simple and it
makes us all feel like a family.

C A L E N D A R When Broadway
member Gloria
Beranek was caring
for her ailing father in
rural Illinois, she
noticed a bright red
magnetic folder on his
refrigerator, clearly
marked in large type,
FILE OF LIFE. The
small pocket held a pre-printed questionnaire which had been
completed by her father, detailing his medical conditions and all of
his prescription medications. After some investigation, Gloria
learned that the File of Life was a state-wide program to assist
emergency medical personnel for whom this would be critical
information when responding to a home emergency.
This Sunday, July 16, Gloria will be in the Fellowship Hall
during the 10:10 a.m. Christian Education hour to explain how the
program works and will have Files of Life to distribute to our
members. She will also be on hand to visit with our adult Christian
Ed classes, if time allows. Come by the Fellowship Hall to get
your own File of Life sheet and magnetized folder for the fridge.
Columbia’s Fire Department has recently adopted the File of
Life program—after learning about it from Gloria! Columbia and
Boone County firefighters, as well as other emergency medical
responders, will be looking for the File on refrigerators at each call.
The information contained in a completed File can give EMTs and
other responders, time-critical medical information—including the
existence of a valid advanced care directive.
The Files of Life are a bit hard to come by in Columbia at this
time—but Gloria will have around 100 Files to share with
Broadway members. Don’t miss this opportunity to pick up one,
complete it, and affix it to your refrigerator. The File of Life can
save yours or the life of someone you love!

Celebrating Another Great Year of Ministry...
The new year for Broadway Christian
Church began on July 1. A new year for the
church means the implementation of a new
budget, which was approved at our June 11
Annual Meeting. The new year also means
bidding farewell to outgoing Board members
and welcoming new Broadway members to
the Church Board.
In addition to the celebration of another
year of ministry at Broadway, three staff
members were recognized for their years of
service. Michael Tatum, Youth Ministry and
Tech Support was recognized for five years
of service. Jay Dudley, Facilities
Superintendent, was congratulated for 25
years on staff. John Rawlings, Daybreak
Worship’s Director of Music, has served
Broadway for 35 years. Thank you to these
dedicated staff members.
Leslie Clay, Broadway’s Board Chair for
the 2016-2017 church year, will transition to
the role of Personnel Chair. Current
Personnel Chair Roger Wilson completed his
term on June 30. John Poehlmann stepped
into the role of Board Chair on July 1.
New Board and Executive Committee
members and officers include Susie Kempf, Vice-Chair
of the Board; Jim Granneman, Secretary; Cinda Eichler,
Elder Chair; and Seth Colaner, Deacon Chair.
Incoming Board members are: Aaron Sapp, Elder
Vice-Chair; Todd Rauch, Deacon Vice-Chair;
Connections Ministry Vice-Chair, Nancy Miller;
Daybreak Service Representative, Marv Pederson;
Traditional Worship representative, Roger Fisher and
Jan Farr; and, Contemporary Worship representative,
Rebecca Gingerich.
New Board members, Elders and Deacons were
elected at the February Congregational Meeting. In
accordance with church by-laws, terms of service begin
on July 1 and continue through June 30 of the following
year. A complete list of Broadway Board members is
available in the ‘16-’17 Annual Report, on the Broadway
website or from the church office.
Thank You to Retiring and New Board Members

Yes, it is hot outside. Yes, it
is July. But the important work of
the Salvation Army doesn’t just
happen at Christmas—Harbor
House remains the only
emergency shelter space for
homeless families, and it
operates 365 days a year,
So why not ring the bell for the
Red Kettle in July? Don Harter has volunteered to
coordinate Broadway’s ringers for a one-day drive on
Saturday, July 22 at our West Broadway Hy-Vee! As
at Christmas, this is a great outreach opportunity for
your Sunday School class, small group, your family or
just for you! Our kettle will be
located at the east entrance—
inside and out of the heat—near
the Starbuck’s and restaurant.
If you can help, please contact
Don at 445.3258 or by email at
[email protected]. Shifts are
usually one hour in length, but if
you would like to ring a little
longer, no problem!
Red kettles will be stationed throughout Columbia
on July 22. If you are unable to volunteer as a bell
ringer, don’t forget to drop in a donation as you are
out and about on Christmas in July Saturday!
Salvation Army Bell Ringing in July?
It Is Christmas in July for the Red Kettles!
The venue was provided by First Christian Church,
but the 2017 Feed the Community Concert was a truly
collaborative outreach event. Broadway, First, Rock
Bridge and Fifth Street worked together to organize the
event—and plans are already being made for another
All-Disciples effort to raise funds for Fifth Street’s food
ministry and other outreach projects.
The results of the shared endeavor? The concert,
silent auction and raffle raised almost $3100 for Fifth
Street’s central city outreach. The Feed the Community
monthly meal has moved to Douglas Park for the
summer, reaching even more people who are in need of a
good meal. Fifth street continues to provide meals to their
homebound members and other families in the central city
who need a little help.
Fifth Street also invites all of us to attend a Unity Concert
at Rock Bridge High School’s Performing Arts Center Saturday, July 15, at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and the
concert features performances by Anita Wilson, Pastor LaMont Walker and VPAg, and Leah Joelle.

On Saturday, July 1, Broadway opened
its doors to our neighbors to host the
annual World Refugee Day celebration.
The event is organized by our local
Refugee and Immigration Services offices,
with some support from Service/Mission
and Outreach Ministry.
This year, around 150 refugees and
their families and friends came together for
games, crafts, garden doors, amazing food
and entertainment. Thanks to all who
attended and organized—and we look
forward to hosting again in 2018!
