“ City National helps keep my financial life in tune.”
So much of my life is always shifting; a different city, a different piece of music, a different ensemble. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. That is the essence of a successful relationship.
City National is The way up® for me.

INSIDE NUTCRACKER - CAN YOU SPOT IT?When Helgi Tomasson made San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker, he incorporated an abundance of details, some that sharp-eyed members of the audience notice, others that are more hidden but add to the ambiance of the production and prepare the dancers for their roles. Can you spot some of these on stage?
1 See if you can spot the maids: When the Greene family arrives at the Stahlbaums' house in the Prologue, they go up the outdoor stairs and are met at the front door by their strict, unsmiling housekeeper Gertrude. They then walk down a hall decorated with old-fashioned prints of flowers, out of sight of the audience. Moments later, all the party children descend a curving staircase into the party accompanied by the more cheerful maid, Bridget.
2 Did you know that each of the children in the party scene has a name and family? In addition to Clara and Fritz Stahlbaum, the children are Rose, Daisy, and Henry Greene Jr., Susan and Bobby Blum, Maria, Dominic and Anthony Viola, and Butch, Grace, and Carolina Pessego.
3 Each child gets a gift at the Stahlbaums’ party. Which gift would you like best?
4 Look for the portraits above the fireplace. They are of the Christensen brothers, Lew, Harold, and Willam, whose artistic vision pioneered SF Ballet.
5 The ballerina doll in Act I has Nutcracker's heaviest costume. Her tutu weighs 18 pounds!
6 Clara’s brother Fritz is very naughty at the party. How does his father react?
11 The ladybugs are usually the youngest members of the Nutcracker cast. Can you spot the small movements of their characteristic ladybug arms?
12 In Act II, the giant Fabergé eggs in the Russian dance are nine feet tall. That’s 50 times larger than a real egg.
13 The bear in Act II seems reluctant to come out. What do the Buffoons do to convince him to saunter out?
14 Clara lends the French dancers in Act II a hand. Can you spot the moment she helps them with their ribbons?
7 Drosselmeyer makes the Stahlbaums' Christmas tree grow to a height of 30 feet in less than two minutes. It would take a real fir tree 15 to 20 years to grow that high.
8 The mice in the battle scene pause for a tasty treat. Look for them enjoying some cheese!
9 Take a long look at the Snow Queen’s embellished tutu. It took 80 hours to make and we have five. That’s a total of 400 hours spent creating one character’s costume.
10 Clara and the Prince depart in a sleigh led by some very interesting creatures. What would you call them?

AWAKEN THE MAGIC Experience the romance of the classic story of a sleeping princess, a handsome prince, and true love’s kiss. With opulent sets and costumes, spectacular dancing, and Tchaikovsky’s glorious score, Helgi Tomasson’s production of The Sleeping Beauty casts a romantic spell over this beloved fairy tale.
The 1990 Centennial Production of The Sleeping Beauty was made possible by Lucy and Fritz Jewett and Mr. Kenneth Rainin. Additional funding was provided by Mrs. Alfred S. Wilsey and The Harkness Foundation for Dance. The acquisition of new costumes for the 2018 revival of this production is made possible in part by Ms. Laura Clifford.
