d ry m em ories w hich w ill soon fade out to jo in it, and th is book you hold in yo u r hand, an a ttem p t to catch some of it on p ap er before it got com plete ly away. I hope the book fu lfills its purpose—I th o u g h t I knew w h a t th a t w as w hen th e y ea r f irs t began, bu t th ere w ere tim es w hen I w asn’t q u ite sure. If w h a t has gone in to these pages is apprec iated as a v arieg a ted record of the U n iversity d u ring th is one year, now and even m ore in tim es to come w hen you stop for a m in u te and w onder ju s t w h a t th ings w ere like w ay back th en —th e y e a r’s w ork w ill be repa id w ith in te res t.

I have p lanned th e book ra th e r stra ig h tfo rw ard ly , despite appearances, in an a ttem p t to keep th e y ear in tac t ra th e r th an divide it up into ersatz blocks of sim ilarities. I hope the fin ished product is not as con­fusing fo r you as its em bryo w as for m e, w hen, every once in a w hile, the overall layou t schem e looked like som ething p e rp e tra te d by a d ru n k en silkw orm .
