Senior Center’s
Snow Closing Policy
So far we have had a pretty mild winter, but
we never know what Old Man Winter has in
store the rest of the season. While we hate to
say it, a big snowfall can be right around the
corner and ready to dump its beauty on our
roads. Just a reminder that our general rule of
thumb is…if the North Ridgeville City Schools
are closed due to inclement weather, the Senior
Center will be closed. There will be no
breakfasts, lunches, or activities.
Transportation services and Meals-On-Wheels
will also not be available on school
“snow/inclement weather days.” Fox 8
Cleveland will list school closings. The staff,
however, will be here with hot coffee and the
phones will be answered if you need us.

THOUGHTS FROM RITA
Late last year I was talking with a nursing student who was doing a paper on Senior Center’s in the area.
She asked me what type of community support we received. When I started mentioning to her all the help
we get, not just from our volunteers and those individuals who help us each day, but from the entire North
Ridgeville community, she was very impressed. Once I started listing all this support on page 13, I was
impressed too. We certainly appreciate all the support we get from everyone throughout
the year, but there is a tremendous amount of support throughout the community and we are very grateful for
each and every one! The list on page 13 shows a lot of love the community has for us, our older adults and
the work we do here each day.
Even as a sit here writing this article the week before Christmas, if I stopped long enough to listen to the
banter between staff, our lovely nurses doing blood pressures the third Wednesday of each month and all
those who attend here, I would be in (joyful) tears. The laughter, the fun and the love that each person,
volunteer, group/organization/company and staff member brings to our Senior Center is overwhelming and
would even bring the Christmas Grinch to tears of joy and happiness
.
One evening before Christmas we had five senior Girl Scouts and their leader, Cheryl Rogers, collect items
from all the Girl Scout troops in North Ridgeville. Then they came in and stuffed stockings for us to give our
Meals-On-Wheels folks. During the Holidays we are on the receiving end of budding talent as we get
countless cards, placemats, napkin holders and other creative crafts from the school children in the North
Ridgeville City Schools and St. Peter School, as well as our area Girl Scouts. I would be remiss if I didn’t
mention the heartfelt love and support we receive over the Holidays from other city employees. Each year Jim
Whitlock from the Utilities Department organizes our “Adopt a Senior Program” where city employees sign
up to fill a basket for a homebound older adults. Each year city employees show a tremendous amount of
support and “adopt” every single person we have on our list.
The Holidays are not the only time we receive support from the community - it happens all year long. This
past spring we had Gateway Community Church volunteer two Saturdays to help clean up the landscaping
around the Senior Center. Then in the fall their ladies group raked older adults yards and made Holiday cards.
The Kiwanis Club and high school Key Club continues to rake yards for us each fall. We can’t forget the
support we receive from our spaghetti dinners. In 2015 we raised almost $10,000 on spaghetti dinners thanks
to our sponsors; North Ridgeville Rotary (January), North Ridgeville Lions Club (April), Kiwanis of North
Ridgeville (September) and the North Ridgeville V.F.W. Post 9871 (October) who helped picked up most of
our expenses. Of course, the Fire Chief John Reese, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bement and their
firefighters/EMT’s are always there helping with dishes and clean up.
I cannot list and explain all the support we receive throughout the year on this page - I would have to write an
entire book! It takes a tremendous amount of support from the community to support the North Ridgeville
Office for Older Adults. We are so grateful to each individual, group, organization, company, etc. for all they
do for us all year long. Please see the list of support on page 13.
May you all have a very Blessed and Healthy 2016! Love to all, Rita
JANUARY/FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER PAGE 3
GREETINGS FROM MAYOR DAVE
I would like to thank everyone for your support during this past election season.
I am very humbled of your faith in me to carry us through the next four years.
We have accomplished much in my previous terms as mayor in this great city and
we have many projects in the making which will come into fruition the next sev-
eral years. In the next newsletter I will give a synopsis of my “State of the City”
address but before you hear from me, I thought it was only fitting in this issue to
see what is on your mind. It has been awhile since we had “Questions for the
Mayor” and it is my pleasure to answer your questions below.
When is anything going to happen at the old shopping center going into Elyria?
The shopping center is privately owned and can remain vacant as long as the owners
want. I am not aware of any current plans to develop the center. We have offered
them various tax incentives should they decide to develop the center.
When is the clear plastic awning going to be replaced or repaired at the senior center?
We currently have an application in through State Senator Gayle Manning’s office requesting funding
through the Capital Improvement funds. If this does not get approved, we will have to look for other ways
to fund the project through our General Fund and be prioritized with all of our other needs.
When will the new road work be completed? Lear Nagle Road will begin in 2016 with half of the project to be completed in 2016 and the other half in
2017. Center Ridge Road widening is scheduled to go to bid in January 2017. Lear Nagle Road to Jaycox
Road will be completed in 2017, and Jaycox Road to Stoney Ridge Road in 2018. During 2016, utilities on
Center Ridge Road will be relocated and a new sanitary sewer line will be installed between Lear Nagle
Road and Stoney Ridge Road.
What are your 3 main goals you want to accomplish in your next term?
First and foremost is the completion of numerous projects underway, some of which we have worked on for
years. These include the widening projects for Center Ridge Road and Lear Nagle Road. Of the newer pro-
jects, we need to work with the schools to connect Jaycox Road to their new grades 3-8 facility and con-
struct a new main fire house on the Jaycox Road extension.
Secondly, we are seeing more economic development activity and would like to see more shopping in North
Ridgeville as well as commercial/industrial growth and expansion which will contribute to our tax base.
Third, work on quality of life issues such as making North Ridgeville healthier as we are now working with
the Lorain County General Health District, make all City properties non-smoking, and work with University
Hospitals on their new health facility, expansion of trails and installation of fitness equipment and overall
improvement in our parks.
It is always a pleasure to get and give feedback on what is happening here in the City of North Ridge-
ville and I appreciate and thank you for your questions. Lastly, on behalf of myself and Bev, we
would like to wish you all a very Healthy and Blessed New Year!
Mayor Dave

RECYCLE PLEDGE The Lorain County Solid Waste Management District has a few
ideas to help us all to keep Lorain County more enjoyable and lit-
ter free. One of the easiest ways is to take The Pledge. The pledge
is an activity from America Recycles Day on November 15th
where pledge cards are signed by people who promise to learn
which more about recycling and to recycle at home and put all
recyclable in the green recycling container and put it by the curb
on collection day. The second part is to sign a pledge card. Chil-
dren are doing it and encouraging their parents and grandparents
to do it too. Cards are available at the Senior Center or by calling
the Lorain County Solid Waste Collection Center at
1-888-449-5463.
