17.1 SCOPE 17.1.1 This section specifies the dimensions and construction details of gauges required for field inspection and the
determination of permissible limits for in-service condition of components used in vehicles in intersystem service. 17.1.2 Only those dimensions and other details necessary for the manufacture and operation of the equipment are
provided. Instructions for the application of the various gauges are given in Section 24, and/or in other relevant Sections.
17.1.3 Inspection periods, methods and practices shall be at the discretion of the System concerned except where
otherwise specified in this Manual, or as determined by consultation and agreement between Systems.

17.2 GAUGE NUMBERING AND MANUFACTURE 17.2.1 All gauges shall be identified with a serial number which shall be of the form: ROA.17-3-5.Q.000 and which has the following significance: ROA represents a standard Railways of Australia gauge 17-3-5 The Diagram number of the gauge in this Manual Q Queensland Railways N State Rail Authority of New South Wales V PTC of Victoria A Australian National W Westrail R National Rail Corporation 000 Serial number or registration number allocated by the owning System. Gauges of AAR origin shall also be marked with the AAR number for reference. 17.2.2 Gauges shall be manufactured strictly in accordance with the dimensions and tolerances shown on the diagrams.
Surface and edge finish shall be of a quality which ensures safe and easy use by personnel. Markings shall be of a size, depth and quality which ensures legibility after long periods of field use and storage.
17.2.3 Only those gauges specified herein shall be allocated ROA numbers and used for the functions prescribed.
