From the Pastor:
My dear friends in Christ,
Ben Franklin reportedly joked from time to time about waking up earlier to economize on candle usage. Daylight Saving Time starts on the Second Sunday of Lent this year. First used in 1908 in Thunder Bay, Canada, its purpose is to save energy and make better use of daylight. All of us, it seems, busy about many things, look for ways to save time, economize on energy, and find more light. Jesus was transfigured before his disciples. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. A heavenly voice did not tell the disciples to look at him but instead, “Listen to him.” As we listen and learn in the light of the Transfigured one, we must allow that light to shine in our hearts as we face our fears, problems, and life difficulties. As we gain back more daylight this weekend, let us invest some of that time in the light to observe a Lenten practice or spend a few minutes in prayer.
Speaking of candle usage, we are still experiencing issues with candles being lit by the Blessed Mother statue without a donation being placed in the offering box. I am having signs made with an offering request per candle which will go on the front of the candle rack. If the trend continues where someone lights 20 candles without an offering, I will have no other recourse but to discontinue live candles in Church.
Don’t forget the Fish Fry Dinner on April 1st in Bogdan Hall. Tickets are on sale after all Masses.
May God bless you all!
Fr. John

LENT 2017 Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics:
1. The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat).
Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to abstain (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat). The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of days, which must be considered serious.
