Principal’s Message
The Anson Taylor students have continued to work hard this past
month to reach high expectations in a safe and positive learning
environment that reflects the board and ministry standards.
It was a pleasure to welcome many of you who were able to attend
our Curriculum Night earlier in the month. Thank you for the
positive feedback, we are pleased you found the evening informative.
Our EQAO results continue to tell us that our students have once
again either met or exceeded the provincial and board results in
reading, writing and mathematics. These results were shared at our
last School Council meeting. At the next meeting, we will be taking a
closer look at our School Improvement Plan and the strategies we will
put in place to ensure ongoing student achievement.
On behalf of the school community, I would like to thank our School
Council Executive for their ongoing efforts to increase parent
engagement. I encourage you to support the School Council events
and attend meetings as we value your input.
Members of the School Council Executive:

Congratulations to our Cross Country runners, Bordenball players and
their coaches for another successful season.
As always, we appreciate the important role you play in supporting
student learning at home. I encourage you to attend the upcoming
parent/teacher interview to further discuss ways in which we can
work together to advance the learning skills, work habits and
academic progress of our students.

Take Me Outside Day
On October 29th, Anson Taylor students
participated in our first “Take Me Outside
Day “event. This Board-wide initiative
encourages students to appreciate and
enjoy the outdoors during this beautiful
season. Classrooms observed nature and
the autumn environment while
participating in a variety of activities
including walking together, collecting
leaves, playing soccer, and investigating
possible signs of animal habitats in the
area. We hope that our students
celebrate all that outdoor play has to
offer, both on this specific occasion and
all year long.

Pizza Nova Visits
Earlier this month, three of our primary
classes received presentations from a
Pizza Nova representative. The purpose
of this event was to provide students
with the opportunity to engage in
numeracy activities using a common food
item with which they are already
familiar. Students each received a ball of
dough and participated in a variety of
activities focused on measurement,
estimation, shapes, weight and mass.
Students were then able to decorate
their dough before taking it home. Pizza
Nova generously provided treat bags for
each student as well as individual pizza
slices. Perhaps there are other daily
opportunities at home during which you
can share numeracy concepts with your
child.
Responsibility Responsibility was October’s recognized character attribute.
During our assembly, students from various classrooms shared
examples of what makes someone responsible at home and in
the community. Our ESL students and library helpers also
contributed their ideas as to why responsibility is important
and gave examples of how small actions within each classroom
can benefit all students at Anson Taylor.
Grade 5 Students - Casting their Ballots!
As part of their Social Science program, the Grade 5s have been learning about the government; and more specifically, becoming familiar with the candidates running for mayor in this year’s civic elections. The class has spent the better part of October becoming familiar with the mayoral front-runners, and learning about the policies to determine which candidate would best represent our Ward. On October 23rd, the class held a lively and engaging debate; using their knowledge of their favourite candidate’s platform to challenge one another on the topics that we believed were of most relevance to our city: specifically, that of safety, housing, education, employment and transit. Following our debate, the students cast their ballots in a mock election. Using actual ballots and equipment, the class had a real life opportunity to experience what it is like to exercise one’s democratic freedom, while becoming more politically aware of the municipality they live in. In the end, if it were up to our future leaders, Doug Ford would be enjoying a comfortable victory over John Tory, while Olivia Chow was a distant third. The students are eager to see how their results compare with the actual election day results. Mr. Weisberg Grade 5

Healthy Living & Physical Education News
Water, water, water!
Students at Anson Taylor are reminded to bring their own water bottles to school every day. Students are allowed to have water bottles in class and are especially reminded of the importance of having one for gym class or DPA (daily physical activity). We ask that if possible your children bring a reusable water bottle instead of a plastic one, endeavoring to be environmentally responsible. Water bottle tips: Choose a water bottle that is ‘BPA free’ and put your child’s name or initials on it
Cross Country Results The Cross country team had a very successful day at the TDSB East Qualifying meet held on October 8th, bringing 52 students from Gr. 2-6 to compete. All students did their best and had a fun day. We are pleased to share that Angel in Grade 2 placed 2nd among all Gr. 2 girls at the meet. The Gr. 3-6 students who were successful in placing 50th or lower in their races were given the opportunity to move onto the TDSB East Championships which were also held at Thompson Park on October 17th. Four students attended that meet with Ms. Slovick, and those students were Mathura in Gr. 6, Apisha in Gr. 2, Carman in Gr. 2 and Tishani in Gr. 5. The girls did a fantastic job and showed superior athletic skill, determination and sportsmanship. Skipping Club
Due to popular demand during gym time, students will be provided the opportunity to participate in the Anson Taylor Skipping Club starting in November. Students will be able to learn some new and challenging skills, create routines, and of course get great exercise. Stay tuned for start dates and times. Walk to School Wednesday’s – every Wednesday from Oct. 29th-Nov. 26th!
Walk to School Wednesday’s have started up, which is a great way to encourage students to walk to school on a daily basis, but especially on Wednesday’s. Walk to School Wednesday’s are not only important to remind students about the importance of daily physical activity, but also how essential it is to use environmentally friendly transportation whenever possible. Students who walk to school (or bike), will be awarded a special sticker, and individual classes will tally how many walkers they have each week. The class with the most walkers each week will win the ‘Golden, or Silver shoe’. Let’s strive towards 100% participation from all classes!
