VIRTUALLEARNINGOVERVIEW
Duringthe2020-2021SchoolYear,studentswillhavetheoptiontoselectaVirtualLearningmodelforinstructioninsteadofattendingclassesatSauconValleyHighSchool.TheVirtualLearningmodelwillallowstudentstohavetheirregularscheduleofclassesasprovidedbythefacultyofSVHSandtofollowthesamecurriculum,learningactivities,andassessmentsasareprovidedtothestudentswhoarephysicallyinthebuilding.Thisguideistoserveasaresourceandreferencetosupportstudentsandparentsinnavigatingthroughthisnewlearningopportunity.
GlossaryofKeyTermsforVirtualLearning:
Distancelearningisnewformanyofus,sowiththatinmind,wewantedtoprovidesomeofthekeytermsyoushouldbefamiliarwithduringthisprocess.
● AsynchronousLearning:Studentsparticipateinonlinelearningatdifferenttimes,indifferentlocations,andinstructionisnotdeliveredinrealtime.Studentsengagewithmaterialsandcompleteworkattheirownpaceandschedulewithinagiventimeframe.SVSDusesSchoologyasourlearningmanagementsystem.
● Virtual/DistanceLearning:Learningwheretheinstructorandstudentsareinphysicallyseparatelocations,andinstructionisdeliveredviaanelectronicdevice,suchasacomputer,tabletormobilephone.Thelearningcanbesynchronous,inwhichallparticipantsareconnectedatthesametime,orasynchronous,whenparticipantsareengagedinlearningatdifferenttimes.
● SynchronousLearning:Studentsparticipateinonlinelearningwiththeirteacherinrealtimebutindifferentlocations.Studentsmayvirtuallyattendclasstogetherviavideoconference,webinar,messageboard/chatfeed,orotherplatforms.SVSDusesZoomasourpreferredvideoconferencingapplication.
VirtualLearningwilllookdifferentfromlastspring:
• Teacherswillprovidedaily,liveinstructiontostudentsviaZoom.Instructionalmaterials,assignments,andactivitieswillbepostedinSchoology.
• Studentsintheclassroomwillparticipateinthesamelessonsusinginstructionaltechnologytoconnectlearnersindifferinglocations.
• Classeswillincludeliveinstructionandalsohavetargetedlearningopportunities,orasynchronouslearning,dependingonthelearningobjectivesofthelesson.
• StudentswilllogintotheclassZoomatthebeginningofclasswiththeircamerason,displayshowingtheirFirstandlastname,andmicrophonemuted.
• Atthebeginningofeachclass,teacherswilltakeattendanceandstudentsareexpectedtobepresentfortheentireclass.
• StudentsareresponsibletocompleteallworkontimeandintheformatasidentiFiedbytheteacher.AssignedworkwillbepostedinSchoologywithduedates,instructions,andanyneededresourcestoassiststudentsinmanagingcourseassignments.
• AllgradeswillcountandbeofFicialtowardstheirGPA.
RegistrationforVirtualLearningatSVHS:
Toregistertoswitchfrom“inpersonlearning”to“virtuallearning”,theparent/guardianshouldemailMs.GaryorMrs.Braxmeiertostarttheprocess.Oncetheprocessiscomplete,theparent/guardianwillbenotiFied.Thestudentwillhavethesameschedulevirtuallyastheydidinperson.Thechangeisnotedbytheteacher,butthemostimportantchangeisinhowattendanceistaken.Studentswillremainaspartoftheclassandwillhaveavideolinktoaccesseachday.Instructionwillbeliveandthroughuseoftechnologytools.Studentsattendingvirtuallyareresponsiblefordailyattendance,engagingandparticipatinginclassactivities,completingallassignedwork,andformaintainingcommunicationwiththeirinstructors.
Studentswhoaretakingvacationorareabsent,remain“inperson”forattendancebutwillstillbeabletoaccesscontentonSchoology.Studentswhomayneedtoquarantinefor14dayswouldstayas“inperson”anduseSchoologytoaccesscontentandcompleteassignments.
IfastudenthasanIndividualizedEducationPlan(IEP),pleaseconsultwiththechild’scasemanagerforguidanceintheprocesstomakesurethattheyarereceivingthesupportnecessarytobesuccessfulwhilevirtual.Ifastudentisselectingtobevirtualforamedicalcondition,thismaybecoveredbya504Plan.Pleasecontactyourchild’sGuidanceCounselorformoreinformationaboutthistypeofsupportforstudents.
To“un-register”astudentfromthevirtualoption,itispreferredforstudentstowaituntiltheendofthe1stquarter.Adjustmentsmaybemadebasedonindividualcircumstances.Parent/GuardianwillneedtosendanemailrequesttoeitherMs.GaryorMrs.Braxmeier.ConFirmationwillbesentastowhenthechangebecomesofFicial.
Attendance:
Studentsareexpectedtovirtuallyattendandparticipateinclassaccordingtotheblockschedule.Teacherswilltakeattendanceforeveryclass.Studentsmustloginandbepresentandreadytolearnintheirteacher’svirtualclassroomspace(i.e.Zoomsession).
Teacherswillconnectwithstudentseachschooldayandtakeattendanceaccordingly.Astudentisconsideredabsentiftheydidnotconnectwiththeirteacherduringtheirscheduled
period.Teacherswillalsomarkastudentas“tardy”iftheysignontoavirtualsessionlateandmisscrucialinstructionaltime.
Studentswillberequiredtotypeintheirnametosignonforavirtuallessonwiththeirteacher.Teacherswillonlyallowaccesstostudentsontheirrostersforthatperiod.Therefore,studentsmusttypeintheirnameasitispresentedonattendancerecordsandincludeboththeirFirstandlastnames.Ifateacherdoesnotrecognizeanameanddoesnotadmitastudentintoasession,theywillbemarkedabsent.
Attendancewillbemonitoredandwillfollowtheregularprocessfortrackingabsencesandtardies.Consequently,theschoolwillreachouttoparentsandguardiansofstudentswhoarechronicallyabsentfrominstructionandhavenotcommunicatedwithteachers.
IfyourstudentishavingdifFicultyaccessingtheSchoologyorZoom,pleasecontactaschooladministratorsothatwecansupportyourstudent.
StudentDisciplineforVirtualLearning:
StudentswhoareattendingSVHSthroughVirtualLearningareexpectedtofollowthesamepoliciesandproceduresasiftheywereinpersonattheHighSchool.
StudentswillfollowguidelinesforDigitalCitizenshipandshouldberesponsibletointeractinasociallyresponsiblemanner.ZoominvitationsarespeciFicallyfortheuseofthestudentsintheclassandarenottobedistributedorshared.Studentswillposttheirfullnametobevisibleonthescreenandwillneedtohavetheircamerasondisplayinglivewhileinclass.Pleasemakesurethatthebackgroundthatisshowingonthescreenofyourpictureisappropriate.Pleasemuteyourmicrophonewhennotspeaking.
StudentsareNOTallowedtorecordzoomsessions,takepictures,orpostanymaterial,information,recordings,orvisualrepresentationsfromtheirclass.Moreinformationwillbesenttostudentsandparentsregardingupdatestoourdisciplinepolicy.

OnlinePlatformsandDevicestoSupportDistanceLearning:
AllstudentsareissuedaniPad,suppliedbySauconValleySchoolDistrict,toactasareliablelearningdevice.Studentsmustalsohaveaninternetconnectiontofullyengageindistancelearning.The chart below gives examples of essential technology and communication tools students and families will be expected to use as we engages in distance learning.

PowerSchool:PowerSchoolprovidesaccesstostudents’informationfromschedulesandgradestoparentcontactsandmedicalinformation.ItisCRITICALthatallnewandreturningstudentscompletetheyearlyregistrationformsandupdatestudentandparents/guardiansinformation.Forasummaryofacademicprogress,pleaseusePowerSchoolforthemostaccuratereporting.
Schoology:SchoologyisourdistrictLearningManagementSystem(LMS)whichallowsteachersandstudentstocommunicate,completeassignments,andengageininteractivelearning.
StudentsloginthroughtheSchoologyapporonanycomputerwithdistrictGoogleaccounts.Parentsareencouragedtocreateaccountstoviewandmonitorstudentengagementandprogress.Aparent/guardianaccountcanreceiveemailsummariestofindoutaboutspecificmissingwork,upcomingwork,andclassactivity.
Zoom:Zoomisavirtualplatformthatprovidesforvideomeetings,liveinteraction,andsmallgroup/wholeclassmeetings.Thiswillbetheprimarymethodforsynchronousinstructionduringvirtuallearningthisyear.AintroductionvideoguidetoZoom.
GoogleSuite:EachSVSDstudentisassignedadistrictGoogleaccountwithemailcapabilities,unlimitedstoragecapacityandproductivitytools.GoogleDrivecontainstheabilityforstudentstocreateandshareGoogleDocs,SlidesandSheetsforclassassignments.
Nearpod:Nearpodisaninstructionalandcontentdeliverysystemthatcombinesslide-basedpresentationswithinteractivelearningtoolstoengagestudentsinlearning.StudentsmayuseNearpodinsideofSchoologyorthroughtheNearpodapp.
EdPuzzleisavideoassessmentplatform.Teacherscanchecktoseewhenstudentswatchinstructionalvideos,howmanytimestheyarewatch,andembedquestionsforcomprehensiontocheckforunderstanding.

We must acknowledge that it will be a steep learning curve for all involved in this new process of distance learning. We have all learned it is critical for students to establish a daily schedule and to practice healthy and productive routines while working from home. Talk with your student about this and try your best to follow these guidelines to get your student off to a good start.

Distance Learning Parent/Guardian Support
The transition to distance learning may be challenging for families. Families’ attitude and support are key for student learning. The guidelines below are intended to help families think about how they might help their students with remote learning.
Provide support for your student by adhering to the guidelines detailed below. The key points are:
