The Greening of a company
Im often asked if I have any recommendations for companies
beginning an environmental program, concludes Bartell.
First and foremost, I say to measure where youre starting from.
Then, have a strategic plan and set specific goals. Take your firststepits not so important how big the step is, whats important is
that you take it. Stop thinking of green programs as expenses andstart thinking about them as profit opportunities. Maybe mostimportant of all, dont overlook anything.
The opportunities for environmentally conscious programs areeverywhere in your data centre, with power settings on your PCs,
with recycled content packaging, by choosing more environmentallyfriendly materials, by establishing recycling programs for yourproducts, by giving your customers power savings optionsyoullsoon find your company both helping the environment and benefitingfinancially.

Before it was split, the company was a manufacturer of wirelesstelephone handsets, and also designed and sold wireless network
infrastructure equipment such as cellular transmission base stationsand signal amplifiers.
Motorola's home and broadcast network products included set-topboxes, digital video recorders, and network equipment used toenable video broadcasting, computer telephony, and high-definitiontelevision.
Motorola's handset division is focused on smart phones usingGoogle's open-source Android mobile operating system. The firstphone to use the newest version of Google's open source OS,Android 2.0, was released on November 2, 2009 as the MotorolaDroid (the GSM version launched a month later, in Europe, as theMotorola Milestone).

Six Sigma is a business management strategy originallydeveloped by Motorola.
The maturity of a manufacturing process can be described by asigma rating indicating its yield, or the percentage of defect-freeproducts it creates. A six sigma process is one in which 99.99966% of
the products manufactured are statistically expected to be free ofdefects (3.4 defects per million).
Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of process outputs byidentifying and removing the causes of defects (errors) andminimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes.

Super-efficient, lithium-based batteries allow the use of
almost 100% of the available energy. They also never need to be
reconditioned or recalibratedmeaning energy isnt wasted in

Motto. take a risk-based approach to supplier monitoring that
is modelled on the Global e-Sustainability Initiative/ElectronicsIndustry Citizenship Coalition supplier engagement model:
Use of self-assessment questionnaires in which suppliers
provide information on their environmental and labour policiesand management systems using the online tool, E-TASC.
E-TASC provides customers with information and associated
risks presented by suppliers, to identify areas for improvementand to target on-site audits.

Packaging
Motorola is on a mission to make its packaging greener. Their
mantra for mobile phone packaging is simple: make it smaller, useless paper, use only paper.
So far the volume of standard packs, and removed virtually all
plastic from mobile phone packaging. At a minimum, they are
made of 70 percent recycled material.
The packs also are designed to fit all products and have aremovable sleeve that can be customized. This cuts down onwaste as any leftover boxes from one phone can be used for othermodels.
Smaller packs dont just save paper, you also can fit more per
truckload, reducing the fuel needed to ship them around. One canfit almost five times as many per pallet of the new micro pack, compared to previous standard pack.
