FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER “Good Shepherd” Sunday
Forced to give an account before the Sanhedrin after healing a crippled man, St. Peter fulfills Jesus’ prophecy that when disciples are dragged before authorities the Holy Spirit will teach them what to say. The Acts of the Apostles portrays Peter as doing just this when he tells the religious leaders that it is Jesus Christ whom you crucified, and whom God has raised, that has healed the crippled man. Peter fearlessly proclaims Jesus to be the sole means through which one can be saved. In the first Letter of John, the disciple writes of the intimate relationship we now share with God. He says through the Father’s love bestowed on us in Christ, we can now be called the children of God. The Gospel of John continues the theme of the Good Shepherd. In a society where the peoples lives depended on their care of livestock, they well understood the role of the shepherd, who, would defend the flock with his own life. Jesus plainly tells the people who he is. He alone is the good shepherd who will give his life for his sheep; and he gives it freely. Je-sus also implies his universal salvific role when he says he has other sheep not of this fold.
Acts 4: 8-12 1 John 3: 1-2 John 10: 11-18
VATICAN OFFERS 'WIDGET' CONTAINING CONTENT FROM VATICAN WEBSITE
Marking the seventh anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict XVI, the Vatican is offering a "widget" -- a software application -- that will allow anyone with a website or blog to provide readers with automatically updated news and doc-uments from the Vatican. The Vatican's Internet Office announced that the widget is available free from the Vatican's website: www.vatican.va. When installed, the widget opens a small rectangular window with four tabs; clicking on one provides the latest news from the Vatican, the pope's Sunday Angelus or "Regina Coeli" address, recent speeches and the Vatican press office's daily news bulletin. The Vatican said the widget should help make the content of its website more widely known and is another opportunity to use new technology "to spread the word of the Holy Father."

WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY Rose and John Little
Mr & Mrs John Rodriguez and family
From the Pastor’s Desk
In the gospel for this Sunday Jesus proclaims himself to be the Good Shepherd. Jesus tells us that the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. This is a metaphor that the people of first century Palestine could easily understand. As a shepherd tends to the needs of his sheep, so too, does God take care of the needs of his people. All the scriptures this Sunday tell us of God’s love and care for us. As an Easter people who live in the light of Christ’s Resurrection, we are reminded again that God is always with us.
In the Acts of the Apostles St. Peter gives a powerful witness before the religious leaders: Jesus Christ, who was cruci-fied, God has raised from the dead for the salvation of the human race. St. John tells us that the love that God bestows on us, and which allows us to be called God’s own children, is made visible in the Resurrection of Christ. The Resur-rection is the promise that one day we shall see God face to face and know him in all his love, grace, and splendor, shar-ing in his own divine life. This First Letter of St. John is both our hope and the vision that guides our lives.
In the gospel Jesus tells us that he will lay down his life for his sheep. This is a foretelling of his Crucifixion. He says that he does this willingly, telling us that this is a free act of love for us. He does so that he may take it up again. This is his promise of the Resurrection. I have the power to lay it down and the power to take it up. Jesus reminds the apos-tles that the Paschal Mystery is precisely God’s plan of salvation: that through Christ’s death and resurrection sins will be forgiven and humanity will be restored to grace in the life of God.
This is the promise and the hope for us. Jesus also says in the gospel that the sheep hear his voice and he will lead them. Lead them where? To the green pastures where they will find rest. Today we hear the joy of Easter proclaimed: the promise of sharing in the divine life and love of God and to know that God loves us so much that we may be called Children of God. The joy of Easter is God’s promise to protect us from all spiritual evil, to walk in his light, and to have peace. The gospel deliberately invokes the 23rd Psalm: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, He leadeth me beside still waters; he restoreth my soul. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil for Thou art with me. He has anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
What wonderful gifts. And, Jesus tells us, all we have to do is listen to his voice and follow him. We need to take the joy of Easter and believe the promise that Christ is always with us, so that we may cast out the fears that (often uncon-sciously) control our lives. Only then can we live in freedom, obey Christ’s commandments, and follow him on the path to salvation.
The Parents Association meeting and elections were held this past Tuesday. I wish to express my gratitude to all the parents and families who have donated so much time, talent and energy throughout the year in the many social events, activities and fundraisers for both the parish and the school. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do.
The Sports Association Dinner and Awards celebration will be held this Thursday. It has been another good year for our sports teams. The enthusiasm and commitment of the board, the coaches, parents and players is truly inspirational. While some of our teams did not fare so well in the win/loss column, more important was the growth in the life lessons of hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship and the bonding of friendships. I always look forward to this joyful celebration. Thank you to all for the many hours of time and love given to our student athletes.
The highlight of the month is coming up this Saturday. Our children from the school and religious education programs will be celebrating the reception of their First Holy Communion. It is a joy and an honor to be part of this major event in the life of these young people. The Eucharist is the source and summit f our lives as Catholics, the gift of the Risen Christ himself, fulfilling his promise to be with us to the end of the age. It is in the Eucharist that we draw our strength, our hope, our very spiritual life. As we keep these children in our prayers, let us also take the time to reflect on the joy, the grace and the goodness of God for this gift in our own lives.
Also coming up in the next few weeks are the New Parishioner Dinner, May Crowning, Mothers Day, the Respect Life Flower Sale and the Sports Board Comedy Night. What a blessing to be part of such a vibrant parish.
Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The Fiftieth Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
This coming October 11, the Church will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the opening session of Vatican
Council II. This great Council was the most significant Catholic event of the last century, and its delibera-
tions and decrees will continue to influence the Church, as have the acts of ecumenical councils before
it. The creed we say at Mass each Sunday, for example, comes from the earliest Councils of the Church in
the fourth and fifth centuries. Vatican II was the twenty first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church.
Why did Pope John XXIII call the Council? In a letter dated December 25, 1961 (Humanae salutis), the
Pope explained that he hoped the Council would change the relationship between the Church and the
world. He called the Council because the world of the twentieth century was so divided by racism, national-
ism, communism, Nazism and wars and hatreds of all sorts that men and women had forgotten that the hu-
man race is a human family. Who would tell the world that we are all brothers and sisters? Pope John
knew that the mission of the Catholic Church is to introduce the world to its savior in every age, and he be-
lieved that the unity of the Church should be a leaven to change the world. The Second Vatican Council
was called a pastoral council because its purpose was not to examine Church teaching directly but to see
what could be changed in the Church in order to place her in better dialogue with a world headed for self-
destruction. The Council was missionary in its purpose; to save the world from itself, the Church would
have to open dialogues on all fronts.
In order to enter into dialogue, elements of the Church’s life were examined and sometimes changed or ad-
justed. The Council’s major documents examined the Church’s worship of God, the sources of God’s self-
revelation, the nature of the Church herself and the Church in our times. Each of these four topics will be
discussed in future bulletin articles. My hope is that recalling the purpose and the teaching of the Second
Vatican Council will renew the sense of mission of the Archdiocese in the coming year. We will continue
to implement the Strategic Pastoral Plan for the Archdiocese and will do so now in light of the universal
Church’s Year of Faith, recently called by Pope Benedict XVI, timed to begin on the very anniversary of the
opening session of the Council. May our hearts be opened anew as we commemorate this great event in the
history of the Church. God bless you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, OMI
Archbishop of Chicago
