• Population:♦ The population of Western Sahara is mostly of Arab and

Berber origin. ♦ Most of the native Sahrawi population is in the refugee

camps in Tindouf.♦ The population is very light.

• Language and religion:

♦ The official lenguage is Arabic, but daily they speak Hassani.♦ Spanish is spoken us a second language.♦ The predominant religion is Islam.

• Economy:♦ Most food for the urban population must be imported.

♦ Each family receives a month: one kg. of pasta, rice, powdered milk, a bottle of oil per person. A bag of flour, and a canister of butane.

♦ Some familys have their own animals (camel, goat and sheep) to do benefit.

♦ All the trade and other economy activities are controlled by the Moroccan government.

• Clothing:♦ Daraá: ▪ Men clothes.

▪ Is open on the sides. ▪ Is white or blue. ▪ It´s got a large pocket on the chest.

♦ Melhfa: ▪ Women clothes.

▪ Large and lightweight costume. ▪ It´s about two metres long. ▪ There is a variety of colours.

• Gastronomy:♦ The main ingredient that usually

accompany all the dishes is the couscous.♦ Is very popular among the Saharan camel

meat and lamb meat.♦ It is very usual to take tea. The tea is

taken in three times. There is a popular coment:

“ The first cup is said to be bitter like live, the second sweet as love and the third soft as death”.

• The association.SAHARAZTAN:

THE MEANING OF THE NAME:♦ This name joins two diferent countries: Sahara and

Baztan.♦ The ending of “–ztan” means “village from…”. ♦ In the logo appears the desert (related to Sahara) and

the mountains (related to Baztan).

THE FUNDATION OF THE ASSOCIATION:

♦ It´s created two years ago.♦ It began with three families from Baztan. ♦ The first three families got children with help of the

association from Leitza.

THE AIM OF THE ASSOCIATION:

♦ Collect money to pay for the children´s travel.♦ Encourage families to get children.

THE ACTIVITIES:

♦ Sale of tickets: raffle.

♦ Sale of T-shirts.

♦ Show a film.

♦ Chats with people with a lot of experience.

♦ The collection of food.

♦ For the last years they come to Baztan 12 children.

♦ Familys don´t have to paid the travel. (exploit of the Argelias militar airport.)

♦ Children come for two months (from the end of June, to final of August).

♦ Children can come til 7 to12.
