Introduction
Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) is an essential component of a quality agricultural education program. Along with classroom instruction, laboratory experience, and participation in FFA activities, SAE provides students with opportunities to participate in and keep records on real-life, hands-on experiences that help prepare them for further agricultural education and/or future careers. In addition, SAE addresses many of the Virginia Standards of Learning.
The Virginia SAE Record Book is a project created by the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute for use by students in agricultural education programs in Virginia public schools.
Special thanks go to Sherilee Strickland at Northwest Cabarrus High School for providing the initial framework for the various SAE projects from which this comprehensive book evolved. Special thanks go as well to the students and instructors at South Granville High School who experienced the evolution of this book into its current form.
Finally, particular thanks go to Dr. Gary E. Moore of North Carolina State University for providing the SAE knowledge, experience, and guidance to help the lead author develop a successful SAE for his students throughout his teaching career.

Virginia FFA Association 206 Litton-Reaves Hall (0343)
Blacksburg, VA 24061 Dear Agriculture Student: Agriculture is our nation’s most important industry, providing food, fibers, and other natural resources that are needed for our nation not only to survive, but to thrive. The agricultural industry offers more than 300 careers in seven major divisions: • Plant Science • Animal Science • Natural Resources • Food Products and Processing • Power, Structure and Technology Systems • Agribusiness • Biotechnology The goal of the Supervised Agricultural Experience exploratory project is to introduce you to the many career options available to you after you have acquired the necessary education in high school and, perhaps, beyond. This project will enable you to take an in-depth look at a number of careers in the agricultural industry, and for each career you examine, you will complete a short written report. Here are several activities that could be appropriate for your exploratory project: • Job shadow a professional working in an agricultural career(s) • Create a scrapbook about an agricultural career(s) • Assist with an agricultural job for a day • Attend a career show to examine an agricultural career(s) • Watch a video about a specific agricultural career(s) • Read a book, magazine article, or journal article about an agricultural career(s) Besides writing your reports, you must be sure to keep a record of the time you spend on your exploratory SAE project. These hours will count towards earning your Greenhand, Chapter, State, and American FFA degrees. Good luck with your project, and welcome to the agricultural industry!

Career-Research Report
The career-research reports you write about the agricultural careers you examine are important parts of these primary learning experiences. If you observe several persons at one business working in different careers, you may choose to write a report on any or all of the careers at that particular business. For example, if you observe workers at a veterinarian’s office, you may write your report on the career of veterinarian and/or the career of veterinarian technician.
Each report must be typed or neatly handwritten and must be three-fourths to one page in length. It must include a complete list of the references you used to write it. Grammar, punctuation, and your organization of ideas will be considered in grading the report.
When all of your career-research reports are finished, attach them together, and hand them in with the time log and the completion checklist, which are found on the next two pages.

Scientific Journal
The scientific journal is the most important part of your project. There are several different acceptable ways to set up a scientific journal, and the best way will depend on the type of data you are recording for your experimental project. The journal needs to be consistent and thorough, as it is the only record of the data you collect in your experiment.
When your project is complete, you should turn in your hand-written journal and a typed record of your results. This record should include all of the data that was recorded during your experiment. Below are a couple of examples of ways to record data. Remember that the nature of the data you plan to gather will determine the best method of setting up your scientific journal.
Examples of ways to record data in a scientific journal:

Virginia FFA Association 206 Litton-Reaves Hall (0343)
Blacksburg, VA 24061 Dear Agriculture Student: During your SAE, you may have occasions to participate in agricultural activities and develop certain agricultural skills that are not part of your SAE as planned. The supplementary activity/skill time log is a place for you to record and report activities you performed and skills, competencies, and knowledge you developed that fit nowhere else in your SAE records and usually happen in less than one day. Although such activities and skills may be peripheral to your SAE, it is important to record and report such items because they may impact your agricultural career outlook in a significant way sooner or later. You will need to complete a report about these supplementary activities you engaged in and skills you learned or reinforced while working on your SAE. Guidelines for this report appear later in this section. Besides writing your report, you must be sure to keep a record of the time you spend on such supplementary activities and skills. These hours will count towards earning your Greenhand, Chapter, State, and American FFA degrees. Good luck with your SAE, and welcome to the agricultural industry!

Supplementary Activity/Skill Report
Your supplementary activity/skill report will be about the activities you performed and the skills, competencies, and knowledge you developed that fit nowhere else in your SAE records and usually happen in less than one day. Such supplemental activities are typically performed only once. You may wish to highlight the top activities and/or skills, competencies, or knowledge components that you performed or gained on a supplemental basis rather than discussing all the items listed on your time log. The report must be typed or neatly handwritten and must be three-fourths to one page in length. It must include a complete list of the references you used to write it. Grammar, punctuation, and your organization of ideas will be considered in grading the report.
When your supplementary activity/skill report is finished, attach it together with your time log and the completion checklist found on the next page.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION TRAINING PLAN

Individualized Cooperative Education Training Plan – Procedures for Employers Purpose The purpose of the cooperative education training plan is to assist the student-trainee in making a successful transition from student to competent worker. The plan serves as a guide for the school and the employer to provide training that will enable the student-trainee to meet an identified career objective. The plan is not a contract and can be modified in accordance with the needs of the student-trainee and/or the employer.
Procedure The teacher-coordinator assumes primary responsibility for the development of an individualized training plan for the student-trainee. The coordinator identifies specific learning experiences that will be provided to the student-trainee either in the classroom or on the job. The training sponsor (the immediate supervisor of the student-trainee) is then asked to assist the coordinator by • identifying tasks for which training can be provided at the training station, using the training plan • adding tasks to the training plan that are unique to the particular training station • supervising the student-trainee’s training for specific job tasks • assessing the student-trainee’s strengths and weaknesses when completing tasks at the training station. The coordinator visits the training station periodically to discuss the student-trainee’s progress. Advice from the training sponsor is used to make modifications in the training plan and to determine specific instruction that can be provided to the student-trainee in the classroom so that the he/she becomes a productive, competent employee.
Orientation Checklist for Employers (Some of these items may be covered in orientation materials provided by the employer.) 1. Introduce student-trainee to all persons with whom he/she will have contact. 2. Show student-trainee the offices, equipment, and supplies he/she will use. 3. Explain the duties of student-trainee’s first assignment(s). 4. Inform student-trainee of who will be his/her immediate supervisor (training sponsor) and responsible for work assignments. 5. Inform co-workers of their relationship to student-trainee, and solicit their cooperation. 6. Inform student-trainee of arrival time, quitting time, check-in procedures, and check-out procedures. 7. Inform student-trainee of lunch time and relief procedures and regulations. 8. Inform student-trainee of facilities available such as restrooms, lunchroom, telephone, coat rack, etc. 9. Inform student-trainee of time-recording procedure, pay schedule, deductions from pay, and computation of wages. 10. Inform student-trainee of appropriate dress for work. 11. Inform student-trainee of any information that is to be kept confidential. 12. Familiarize student-trainee with employee benefits. 13. Inform student-trainee of clauses in a union agreement that pertain to cooperative education student-trainees, if applicable. 14. Inform student-trainee of career possibilities in the firm.

* For programs in which the cooperative method is optional, teacher-coordinators may supervise student-trainees from other classes within a program area where the number of students enrolled in cooperative education does not justify an additional coordinator. In those instances, the teacher-coordinator must meet with the student-trainee’s classroom teacher(s) before visiting the student on the job (see guidelines in the 2002 Cooperative Education Handbook).
